Girls- in light of Janet's situation it really calls to my attention that after the wedding is over- you need to protect yourselve and your familyLiving Will, Will, Life Insurance, and Long Term Care insurance are all something that young newlyweds don't think about!
Continue to pray for Janet and her family

I totally agree. I spoke to my FH about this last night. I was so over whelmed with grief for her and her family. Makes you realize how fagile life really is. My heart and prayers go out to them.
We're planning on getting all those things if not before, then right after we get back from HM.

Re: I posted this on the Newlywed board- but it's something everyone needs to think about
I know- its something none of us want to think about, but so important... We should all have health care proxies, and if you own things, a will.... I am going to make sure we do these things soon after the wedding. Its so scary, it can happen at any time, to anyone.... We think we are young and don't have to think about these things for years and years, but unfortunately thats not the case.

Re: I posted this on the Newlywed board- but it's something everyone needs to think about
Thanks for posting this. So many young couples do not like to talk about these issues. I have to admit, we are no different. FH normally won't even talk about death and sudden illness (although his mom died suddenly when he was young) but with so much tragedy lately, he is at least open to talking about now. Thanks again.

Re: I posted this on the Newlywed board- but it's something everyone needs to think about
It is so sad what is happening to them....And it is sad also that I don't even know what a health care proxy is. All DH knows is that I don't want to be kept alive if I am going to be kept alive artificially for the rest of my life.
Did anyone see the ER episode where Cynthia Nixon had a stroke? It is so scary to think that we can be totally aware of what's going on and not be able to move or express anything.......even though it's a TV show, it really made DH and I think......

My DH and I discussed it last night, we plan on writing our wills soon. We are going to talk to our lawyer, something we are both dreading but unfortunately would have to be done sooner or later.

Thanks for posting this. I'm a little unfamiliar with this kind of stuff. Can someone tell me what exactly we need and how we go about doing it?

Thank you for posting this. FH & I have been talking about for the past month. We are probably going to meet with a lawyer after the holiday's next month and work on a will. It is so sad to think about, but unfortunately it is reality. Enjoy everyday you are with your loved ones!!!!

Re: I posted this on the Newlywed board- but it's something everyone needs to think about
Very good advice. It's so true - talking about these things isn't always comfortable but it is very necessary. We definitely need to address some of the things you mentioned - we thought we were ahead of the game but a tragedy like this made me realize that we are far from it.
We bought our co-op a few years ago before we were even engaged but we made sure that we had it set up where both names are on the morgage and share certificate. We also have it set up that if one person dies the other has sole ownership.
In addition, I think it's important to have a list of the benefits we each have along with contact info. We have each other as beneficiaries on 401(k) plans, etc...but we need a list so that each one knows what exactly is out there.

Re: I posted this on the Newlywed board- but it's something everyone needs to think about
I agree - it's very important to have the documents drawn up.DH has worked on all of his family's documents and from observation - it is not a drawn out process. He usually had it completed within 2 weeks.
I would suggest getting the Health Care proxy and Power of Attorney done before the honeymoon or soon thereafter. You can always revoke it if necessary.
.
Now, we are in search of a good life insurance carrier. Any suggestions would be helpful.
TIA
