NWR - Does anyone here grind their teeth and have jaw pain?

Apparently, I do. This is a new one to me. It friggin' hurts... and I find myself grinding my back teeth allllllll day! I'm sure I do it a night, too. I went to the dentist thinking I had a MILLION cavities in the back of my mouth because it hurt SO much, I couldn't open my mouth the other night! Ow!!!

(p.s. - unrelated to THAT pain, I also need a root canal. Great.)

I was just wondering if anyone had any advice to stop grinding, help with the pain of it, etc. Thank you!

I do too. Mostly during the day. When I'm alone I put my shirt collar in between my teeth. I'd like to hear any advice on this one.

Re: NWR - Does anyone here grind their teeth and have jaw pain?

now that I'm aware of it, I find it AMAZING how hard it is to NOT grind my teeth. The dental hygenist told me to take Advil and use warm compresses when it hurts, but I would just like to STOP grinding! I think it's the wedding stress! I've never done this before!

I used to work for a dentist... what you have is called TMJ... the only way u will really stop grinding is if u try hard during the day. When u cathc urself doingit STOP!!! and at night since we do things unconciously it is recomended that you get a night guard made. They work. It is kinda like a small clear retainer and at first might be a bit uncomfortabel but it will save ur teeth in the long run and relieve the tension from ur jaw..Speek to ur dentist about it I hope this helped.

Re: NWR - Does anyone here grind their teeth and have jaw pain?

thank you! A waitress at a restaurant I was at last night overheard me talking and said that she spent $500 on a night guard that is SO big and uncomfortable, she can't use it. I wonder if they make smaller, less expensive ones?

Thanks for the info! I appreciate it!

I do and wear a night guard on the bottom. I'm used to it, and it protects my teeth!

Re: NWR - Does anyone here grind their teeth and have jaw pain?

it's tmj & mainly caused by stress....
I didn't even know I did until I was on vacation 2 years ago & my friends all heard it & told me...I only do it at night. I would wake up in pain & not know why...I called dentist & they said i needed to see a specialist for that, needless to say $100 later, the dr. told me it's tmj brought on by stress & they could order a customfit mouthguard to wear at night but will be a few hundred i think he said like 5-800, & he said you can order on online or eckerd carries them too. I bought one & they are hard to sleep w/it but it's worth a try, only like $15 he said also to see pcp dr. to get a lose dose anxiety pill, but i didn't bother b/c i didn;t think he would give it to me anyway....it's worth a try to see if it helps...
try chewing gum during the day...

Re: NWR - Does anyone here grind their teeth and have jaw pain?

I have been doing it for years (in my sleep). I was diagnosed w/TMJ at about 17 yo. I had a night guard but grinded through it & eventually broke it. I've had ultrasound, I take a muscle relaxer at night but w/all the stress lately nothing seems to work.

Re: NWR - Does anyone here grind their teeth and have jaw pain?

I have TMJ also. In the past, I had a night guard that was not custom made. I paid around $65 for it. It fit ok, but it would irritate the inside of my cheeks during the night so I stopped wearing it.

Another thing you can try is relaxation exercises, warm compresses for the pain, and self-hypnosis CDs. I have one by Scott Sulak especially for TMJ and he basically takes you through a progressive relaxation, esp of your jaw muscles.

Re: NWR - Does anyone here grind their teeth and have jaw pain?

It really depends on how hard you grind your teeth. I had a soft guard and I bit through it in like a week. I had a custom made hard one and that worked. But now I have braces, so no nightguard for me until they come off.

Re: NWR - Does anyone here grind their teeth and have jaw pain?

It is DIRECTLY related to stress, I had it and it is so painful. Got rid of the stress (an ex) and I'm great now!!!

I did see smaller guards in a magazine, if I find it again, I will post....

Good Luck!
