All deepends on where you live on LI. I live in Zone 1... the cheapest zone because it is the closest to the city (South shore, zone 1 is lynbrook -seaford, i think...) anyway, my monthyl was $192.00 a month x that by 12.... also, cost is higher if you have to get a subway/bus metrocard on top of that...which i believe is $65.00 a month. it's costly, but unfortunately usually is better than gas and tolls and traffic and stress.

Remember to discount that some because most offices offer some form of transit check so it's pre-tax, which helps.

Yes, it does. We use a similar program (we just switched this month), you can take up to $105 pre tax and anything additional after tax directly through your paycheck. It's saving me over $500 (don't take LIRR anymore but my ticket is $181/month not sure if it's the full year or 6 months since we just switched the program). It doesn't hurt as much when it comes directly out of your paycheck.

If the job isn't within walking distance of Penn, he's going to have to pay for the subway as well (approx $80 with a pay per ride metrocard) on top of the LIRR ticket.

Also, the LIRR offers a small discount if you order your tickets through the mail and ride program. Most people in my office do that to take advantage of extra savings.
