Thinking about moving!
We might be moving to North Carolina!I don't know about you guys but everyone I talk to is moving to NC. (My family included).
We are thinking about it and I'm almost positive we will. Hopefully soon!
We would have such a better life there, LI is just getting too expensive.

Re: Thinking about moving!
We have been having the moving conversation as well. My parents live in AZ, but I don't think we'd be happy there. We want to move somewhere within 4-4/12 hours from NY so that we can get in the car and drive home whenever we want. But we also have to go somewhere with job opportunities for us. Anyway, we have pretty much been playing with the idea of moving to New Hampshire. A friend of mine lives there and I think I would be able to get a job where she works. I hate the thought of getting their funny accent, lol, and it is colder, but if we want to start a family we can't do it on LI. As much as we'd love to stay it's too expensive. Good luck to you :)

We agree-wayyyyyyyyy toooooooooooo expensive. If we can get some family to move that's where we would probably end up-North Carolina.

Re: Thinking about moving!
I agree. Long Island is way to expensive. You have to be rich to afford a house here today, especially with the taxes. We are going to do serious looking after the wedding.Good luck to both of you.

Re: Thinking about moving!
GOOD LUCKFH and I will be movign... anyone who doesn't make well over six figures has it tough on LI. I want to be able to be home with my kids for a years and you just can't do that here.
FH and I are most likely heading to PA.... although tons of my friends have headed down to NC, I don't know what you did, but several of my friends that moved down there are nurses and teachers and had job offers within days of dropping off their resumes!

Re: Thinking about moving!
Last month my FH and I went to Wilmington, NC to check the place out. We are both teachers and heard that it is real easy to get a job down there. While the pay is substantially less, so is the cost of living. You won't believe the type of house you can get for way under $300,000! I also thought that Wilmington would be too rural for me, but it isn't AT ALL! It reminded me of LI actually, they have EVERYTHING we have. Downtown is so cute and the beaches are amazing, water is SOOOO WARM! Keep me updated on your decisions!

I agree. Everything in LI is getting so pricey. We were thinking the same thing. Possibly the gulf side of Florida

Re: Thinking about moving!
We just moved to North Carolina a couple of months ago. A word of advice do it after the wedding is over. We really like it down here (once I got over being home sick) life is so much affordable down here, the job market is much better. We are just having a better life. What part of NC were you guys thinking of moving to?

Re: Thinking about moving!
That's very exciting news! If that's what you and your DH want to do then good luck to you!! I don't, personally, feel that Long Island is 'too' expensive-- everything is relative and I would pay any amount to live here. There are so many reasons, for me, that make it worth it. If that means I have to work harder to do so than so be it- but I love it here and the school districts, quality of life, location, etc are all amazing! So I think that's why it's more money than most places-- it's one of the best places in the country to live.If you guys feel NC is for you then I think you are definitely doing the right thing and that you will love it... but when I see people saying how costly it is here, I don't know-- I just don't feel like it is that bad... b/c you get what you pay for. That's JMHO though-- everyone's different.
Good luck to you again-- definitely update on if you guys find anything you like and take pics-- they probably have beautiful houses (and a lot of brand new ones too!)
Take care!

Re: Thinking about moving!
That's totally great that you are moving down there. FH and I are contemplating that too.New York is great with all its cultural attractions and ethnic diversity but it takes 2 incomes to live in a decent area within 1 hour commute to NYC these days.

Re: Thinking about moving!
Which part of the state are you guys considering? It's true that there are many jobs in the education and medical field, so if you have those backgrounds you shouldn't have a problem finding work. However, if you don't (like me) it'll be a challenge, since a lot of smaller companies don't necessarily jump at the chance to help out a 'yankee.' I guess it depends on the area--we live more in-state in the Triad (Greensboro , Winston-Salem, and High Point). Lots of OLD OLD tobacco $$ in these parts.

Re: Thinking about moving!
NC is a great idea. My best friend is investigating a move to NC right now
She found new homes for like $250K or less in Charlotte
NYC is outrageously expensive and most people are not making over $50K solo so they need two incomes to rent or buy a home.
I work in real estate and in the city a decent living space will run you at least $325K (Brooklyn) and that will be junior one bedroom coop (550 sq feet) in a nice neighborhood.
A 2 bedroom coop (about 700 sq feet) will run you at least $400K (Brooklyn). And lets not even talk about houses
And the added expense of private schools.
A friend paid $569K for her 700 sq foot apartment on the upper West Side (Manhattan) like a year ago - 700 sq feet!!!! It's worth like $620K now but still - 700 sq ft & it needed work. Her brother is a contractor though so she got the work done on the cheap.
A one bedroom rental in a nice area will run $1,500 minimum and studios (400 sq ft) are running $1,100 minimum in the nicer areas. Granted, this is NYC and not Long Island but even a house in Nassau - a starter house, will run what $300K

Everyone always says how great it is to live in NYC since the city is so close and the attractions so numerous - but most of my friends that say that rarely, if ever, take advantage of Broadway theater, museums, designer shopping, fine dining, late night clubs etc. They are so busy working at their $100K+ jobs to afford their apartments/houses that there is no time for anything else.
Many people that come into my office prequalified to purchase are shocked at the prices. A guy moving from DC called me yesterday about investing in a brownstone and he has $600K to spend......and that will not even get him a fixer upper in a borderline neighborhood in NYC
We had some college kids from CA come in for a rental this week and the receptionist told them they would probably have 'sticker shock' at the prices in the area. One guy responded that they were paying $895 for a 2 bedroom in CA as if that was expensive
When she told them our average 2 bedroom runs $2,000 - $2,200 they had 'sticker shock'
I am a huge proponent of moving out of NYC/Long Island to have the lifestyle you want. You can always come back to visit

we talk about buying a home all of the time and the prices are just too outrageous. We are hoping the prices will drop soon.

Re: Thinking about moving!
My FH andI have been talking about moving down to Atlanta after the wedding...He was born in NY but raised down there. He's got his mom & most of his friends down there...I'm a lil nervous b/c I have NO ONE down there..All of my family is in NY or SC ....However, we started comparing the cost of living out here on LI & out there in GA & realized that if I want to have any children at all & not live in a box...there will have to be some sacrifices made...good luck everyone

Re: Thinking about moving!
We are actually going down there on Friday. We are thinking of moving in January, after the wedding. I keep getting calls from schools but its not the right time. It's just not right for us to stay here with these insane prices and no teaching jobs..Welcome New Vendors
