Re: ***~OFFICIAL Chinese Brides Thread!~***- updated w/ cake, traditional attire pics and vendors

Hello again!

I am a caucasian woman who married a Chinese man. We didn't incorporate a lot of Chinese traditions into our wedding ceremony but there were some.

We had our rehearsal dinner in Flushing Chinatown. It was a traditional Chinese Wedding banquet with all of the required dishes. Our non-Chinese guests were SO surprised and LOVED the food. I have some interesting pictures of the guests playing with duck and chicken heads. LOL

Also, we used a Chinese elder to choose our wedding day. They consulted the Chinese almanac relating to our horoscopes and gave us a list of approved wedding days. (our wedding date was 6/18/06)

Also, I wore a Cheong Sam that was custom made for me in Manhattan Chinatown. It is a beautiful dress but it was NOT cheap! I was not a "skinny" bride but somehow they created my Cheong Sam so that it was flattering. My guests LOVED it when I came back into the reception wearing my dress.

I was very careful to honor Chinese superstitions, since my mother in law is very traditional. We didn't have any white candles or white flowers. We made sure to eat noodles and chicken on our wedding day. Lots of other little things that probably weren't noticed by others but were appreciated by my in laws.

Here is a pic of my husband and I on our wedding day, in my Cheong Sam.

Here I am dancing with my brother.

With the jacket off, throwing the bo-k.

Dancing with my uncle (another shot with the jacket off)

Re: ***~OFFICIAL Chinese Brides Thread!~***- updated w/ cake, traditional attire pics and vendors

wow, thanks so much to all the ladies (chinese and non-Chinese!!) who are keeping this thread alive!
just as a disclaimer, this thread for sure is not limited to just chinese gals!

there really is alot in the chinese tradition though if you want to really get married strictly by the book. and actually, there really is a book! it's called the "3 rites and 6 letters" - dictates the whole marriage tradition and what not...

superkat: your cheongsham is *BEAUTIFUL*!! i don't know what you are talking about by not being a skinny bride though because i think you've got a really nice bod i can tell that the sham definitely was not cheap too because the cutting is very intricate. that style is called the "yup bok" (in canto) or "re bo" (in mandarin) style. i think the closest translation would be "halter top like" in english. it is very flattering and just gorgeous!

i do have to say though that a lot of people get confused with chinese tradition and culture as religion. much of what developed as chinese tradition developed as a way to celebrate the different seasons and markings of an agrarian lifestyle/harvest cycle. for instance, mid-autumn, winter festival, chinese new year... all take place on the 15th double 15th (30) of the lunar calendar, which are days that mark a crop harvest or seed planting. by extension, almost all chinese festivals are celebrated with ALOT of food. depending on which locality of china you're in and the local crops, the type of food and dishes change but it's always a LOT of food.

it wasn't until buddhism entered china that much of chinese traditional practices got "merged" or infused with buddhist and taoist beliefs. burning incense to pay respects to your ancestors became something more like a religion. but festivals and important life events remain distinct from religion though, subject to tradition. that's what anthropologists now call "popular chinese religion."

that's really a very very short and nutshell version... and i prob did a horrible job of trying to explain the diff but there's so much depth to the chinese tradition that there are literally libraries full of books on them. (harvard yenching library is awesome for that!) you are talking about a culture that's about ~4000 years old, one of the first civilizations out there! :P

well, that's enough nerdiness from me for today i wonder if i can make biz in chinese wedding planning

here are some pics of the dragon and phoenix - very important traditional drawings used to symbolize a chinese marriage....interestingly, a kung fu school also used the first drawing as their mascot

I am actually have a wedding in New York and Shanghai. In Shanghai, we are going to have a traditional ceremony and in NY we will have a Western ceremony.

I am actually kind of excited. We have already booked a NY venue and a Shanghai venue.

I love seeing all these pics.

WOW!! You are doing a great job by keeping this post alive!!!!
I also booked eternal wedding group as well for the whole package except for my wedding dress.
I'm sort of worried about the selections they have for bridesmaid dresses.

I recently took my indoor pics. Did you take them yet?? I'm suppose to take my outdoor pics this Friday but the rain is making it not happening...so I'm gonna have to reschedule!!!!

You should check out weddingbee.com as well!!!

YEA!!! another Eternal gal!!!

i think their bm dresses aren't going to be anything stellar but i heard from CoCo that she's going to be ordering some cool light green ones in october!!! i took my outdoor pics in www.sibg.org i love the chinese gardens - so pretty!!! we're thinking of taking our indoor pics in january b/c i'm not in NY right now. but i can't wait to take them!!!

did u see your indoor pics yet? don't worry abt the rain~ on the day we were going to take outdoor pics, it was overcast, drizzling until 2pm but at 12pm, we decided to take the risk and go for it. when we got to sibg, the skies cleared up and the sun even came out unless the forecast is for t-storms or something, i wouldn't worry about it

hmmm... lemme check out weddingbee and see do u have any eternal pics to post? i'll post some when i get mine too who are you going with for a DJ?

WOW....the Staten Island Botanical Garden actually has a Chinese Garden!!!! It's amazing....
I actually postponed my outdoor pic to 10/26. I figured the leaves are starting to change color soon, so mind as well wait until they turn color. I really hope it won't rain AGAIN!!!
I just took my indoor pic last Thursday so I won't be getting them until mid to end October.
What did you think of their make-up skills? At first, I didn't like it. I guess it was because I'm not seeing myself with so much make-up in pictures. After a while, I'm starting to like it (or maybe I'm getting use to it!! Hahahhaha). I had my make-up done by Hellen when I had my engagement party. For my indoor shoot I had Ivy who did my hair and make up! Who did you have?
I noticed that you are getting married in a church rather than your hall. Recently, I've been wondering about other places I can get married. Does your church allow nondenominational couples to get married there? I noticed it's not a Catholic Church? It's actually really pretty too!!
For DJ, I'm using In the Mix. My MC is Donny and he actually did a lot of weddings in East Manor a while back. He's really funny and the price is actually not that bad. If you want, FM and I'll tell you the details.
I'm so glad I found another Asian bride with almost the same vendors!!!
Oh yeah, I can't wait to see your studio pictures!!!!

hi mashmallow!!! YEA!!! the chinese scholars garden is AWESOME!!! it makes for beautiful pics especially if you're planning on wearing hanfu or cheong sham! i figure that since we're taking indoor pics in wedding attire, might as well take the chance to use the outdoor appointment to take chinese wedding pics

Coco actually did my hair and makeup! She's awesome!!! i'm kind of used to all the makeup b/c that's what most girls in asia do when they take glamour shots. nowadays, fake lashes are even run of the mill in hong kong! some gals wear them everyday! pretty crazy i definitely think that the effect in the pictures come out nicer too. i had a friend who wanted "natural makeup" for her wedding and all her pictures came out as if she was just taking everyday pics, her hair was coming undone hehe... need my hair to stay up for 14 hours on my wedding day so i'll prob be the one saying "give me that hairspray!"

my church is non-denominational and actually i am non-denominational Christian too. the only thing is my church is *expensive*!!!! we're paying close to $1000 but they do provide runner, candelabra, pew candles, counseling, organist and the pastor. they've got a website you can check out: http://www.ccew.org/ it really is a very pretty church

hmmm... I'll email you about the DJ. looking for someone who can provide bilingual service. the only "decent" bilingual eng/chin so far that i've seen is OUO tho.... how much are they?

so glad that there are other chinese brides slowly finding this thread!!!! with all the flushing/chinatown vendors, it'll be a good resource and community to help one another out!

Oh man...I was typing up a lot of things and all of the sudden my computer at work decided to go kuku on me.....

Anyways....
so did you like Coco's work in terms of make up and hair? I thought Ivy was pretty good too but somehow her make up made me not look like myself almost. I guess i"m just curious to see what Coco can do.

Thanks for the info on your church. I'm gonna call them today. I always wanted to get married in a church but due to my non-religious background, I thought it would be impossible.

I wanna see pics of the cherry blossom!!!!!

What is your impression of OUO, sangalong, dynasty, and chinese mc?

i heard that sangalong and dynasty are terrible. chinese mc seems to provide a lot of equipment like karaoke but i've been to one of their weddings and they literally messed up a song and had to stop and replay! not cool~
i've been to an OUO wedding but unless you can get one of the better DJ's, everyone else really isn't that great.... my experience is the American DJ's are a lot better - the only thing is they don't have the bilingual feature

<edit>
one of the bad things about the chinese vendors is if they know you're really interested, they will increase their prices to the max~ it's really unprofessional IMO but hey, they've got a monopoly in the community. very annoying tho ~ if an American DJ can get a good bilingual translator, then i think they'd make a huge hit in the asian american community.

i had a friend who one of the chinese DJ's promised one of their best DJ's but he bailed out at the last minute and got stuck with someone that completely ruined her wedding. she got a 50% refund i think~ i can't remember who the vendor was though, think it might have been OUO...

<aside>
one of the reasons why i went w/ Eternal was b/c they were one of the more honest chinese vendors out there. chinese vendors who say they'll do anything for your price like True Love typically give you really bad quality products. one of my friends that used True Love was so upset with her wedding photos. felt really bad for her~ sad that some of the chinese vendors only care about the money and don't really take much pride in their work

I really liked Coco at Eternal wedding. Most likely I will book her for my makeup. It will be a pain for me to get to Flushing on my wedding day.

Do you have any suggestions on Asian bridal makeup in Manhattan?

I hate how Chinese places keep trying to sell me packages. I am not ordering a lunch special.

Which dj's are the better dj's at OUO? I just made an appointment with them.

in manhattan, i'd suggest Fa Ga (dunno the english name) in chinatown i'm sure if you ask any chinese wedding invitation place in chinatown, they will know though. ask h2cards.com

OUO-r u meeting with Charles? tell Charles that ang (the girl with the crazy website) recommended and i think he'll tell u which DJ's are better to work with i don't remember who the DJ's were that i saw from OUO so i don't want to give u wrong info.

ahhaha i agree w/ the lunch special part
