All of you girls keep referring to price by table. How many guests go in each table?
I LOVE East for dimsum.
Do they actually have space for you to rehearse?
I am only inviting my bridal party and my international family members to my rehearsal dinner. We will have 20-30 people at our rehearsal dinner.
It's typically 10 per table, although you can probably fit 12 if the ppl are tiny or there are kids. But ten is waht you typically pay for.
so 38 bucks per head if 10 per table. That's hard to believe though! I typically hear of 50 per head at the 10 seat tables...
My bro had his wedding at East Manor as well...
Is East Manor the same thing as East?
Sorry, I am a little clueless. The East I am thinking of is the more modern cleaner looking restaurant. There are two locations: Main St and Kissena.
Which location is better for a rehearsal dinner location?
Fiance's family is from out of state so I think they would enjoy a NYC style chinese banquet. My Korean guests will definitely like it too. Most of my Manhattan friends have never even been to Flushing so I think overall it could be a good choice.
It's pretty sad. My Fiance is such a twinkie that he doesn't know anything about these chinese banquets. I even know more than him!
The place we went to was called "East" and it was on Main Street in Flushing. We were on the second floor, they have great dim sum on the weekends.
How far in advance did you book?
Were the tables actually set up at the correct time?
I don't know why but I don't trust these Chinese restaurants!

My MIL negotiated the prices for the RD and I signed the contract, so I know she wasn't fibbing about the price. She "knows" a lot of people in Chinatown, so maybe that is how she got such a good price. Everyone was very stuffed and full after the dinner, there was plenty of food. We had 2 tables of 10 and 1 table of 12. So overall it was a great deal.

We booked about 2 or 3 months before the wedding. Everything was setup and waiting when I arrived. My MIL was actually there before me, so maybe she was pushing them around, which wouldn't surprise me. The food was great, but service is sometimes questionable at thise kinds of places.
My MIL wanted menus on the tables to let the caucasian guests know what the different kinds of food were and they wrote it on a piece of paper and photocopied it! My MIL thought this was great, I couldn't believe how sloppy it looked. I would have printed menus on my PC if I had known she wanted it!

Bridex100, have you thought about a korean dinner instead?
Because I believe the service at a korean restuaurant is usually better.
There's a couple of nice ones in Flushing and they have separate rooms so you don't have to share the restaurant like you do at the chinese ones....
The one on northern boulevard, Kum Gang San host weddings and they have a separate room. You can do an outdoor wedding at Queens Botanical then head over to KGS for the reception. I think it's nice there and I also love the food.

It's funny. The Chinese restaurants I love, the Chinese typically think is not very good. At the same time, as a Korean, I hate Kum Gang San's food.
I was open to having a Korean rehearsal dinner but I thought it would be nicer to have chinese banquet style since my Korean guests (adults) probably have never had a chinese banquet style dinner. Plus, FH isn't from NY so I think they'd like to experience it here.
I don't think Korean bbq is that special with any significant meaning. I could be biased bc I have korean food somewhat often.

In hindsight, I think it would have been amazing to have a NY Garden outdoor ceremony followed by a nice Chinese reception. It would have been so much cheaper as well!!!

Did/are any of you ladies using a Chinese bakery for your wedding cake? Which bakeries do wedding cakes?
I visited Taipan Bakery. Their price quote was very reasonable but the pictures weren't that great. However, I love that bakery and am very satisfied with the taste of their pastries.
Just wondering what your thoughts were.

One thing I regretted that I didn't really look into is finding an elegant space and having a medley of food catered - chinese, american and italian.
Since DH is English and I'm chinese I think it would have been nice to combine it so it doesn't appear like I favor one family over the other. We ended up going the easy route 'cus Westbury Manor provides everything, right down to the bridal attendant and program baskets. :D

I think we are monopolizing this board! Did you guys see the new Official African American thread?! :D
Anyway, on to the bakery, Tai pan is good but I would make sure they don't used canned fruit fillings in the cake. I had their cakes before and didn't like the canned stuff.
One asian bakery I absolutely love is the one at Cafe Zaiya at 41st St in NYC. They make the best pastry in my opinion. Their strawberry cake is heavenly!!!
And they can make a 40 person cake for 60 or 80 bucks. I think you can get them to make a tiered one for under 200 or 300. Which is considerably cheaper than the american bakeries.
It's also not too sweet and taste amazing!!! :D

I second Cafe Zaiya! The cakes there are the best I've ever had. I didn't realize that they can make a wedding cake as well. If I had known I would have gone to them.
I went to Tompkin Square Bakery, which makes beautiful cakes, for about $8/slice. It sounds expensive, but in fact you really need only about 1 slice to feed 2 people (and they'll tell you that), so I ended up getting the smallest at $250, and still had left overs. It's really pretty decent for a wedding cake, looks absolutely gorgeous, and is not too sweet. But of course it's not as good as Cafe Zaiya. The problem is that you can't display the Cafe Zaiya cake on the wedding day -- its whipped cream frosting will just melt.
You can also get the smallest cake you can get away with, and then order a mix of tarts and miniatures sweets. People really love it.

I think we should have our own Chinese BBS so we can subdivide all the topics!
Cakes, Chinese tradition, chinese fashion, Difficult MILs, etc.! ;)
I know one of the ladies here would be posting to her heart's content on Difficult MILs. You know who I'm talking about! :D
Anyway, I heard about this asian baker who does chinese and even green tea flavored cakes! Eeeks!
I think even if you go with the reception hall baker you can order a nice flat cake from Cafe Zaiya and serve that instead, and use the other cake for display. :D

Re: ***~OFFICIAL Chinese Brides Thread!~*** updated w/ centerpiece ideas
past chinese bride here... we had a western ceremony/reception at the Bourne Mansion that my husband and I planned (ok... that I planned... heehee) and a chinese banquet the following day in chinatown planned by my mom. We were not planning on having the chinese banquet at all... but with my mom's constant nagging... passive agressive mind games... she eventually got her way. heehee.. thank god thats all over!
piping in about chinese banquets... the per head price really depends on what dishes you choose. I've seen menus ranging from $30 a head to $70. It's for the same amt of dishes but if you choose a menu with all seafood vs one with just a few seafood dishes... the price will definitely reflect it. And then there's the different types of seafood dishes... 1/2 lobster per guest vs 2 lobsters to share amongst 10 guests. Shark fin soup vs seafood/tofu soup... and even shark fin soup has different prices.
My friend had her engagement party at East Manor in Elmhurst for $35 a head, for what she got... I thought it was a bit overpriced. She knew that too but she really wanted it at East Manor so no biggie. Service was ok.
My in laws had their anniversary party at a chinese restaurant in brooklyn, they paid $19 a head. The dishes my in laws had were comparable to those from my friends engagement party.
Our chinese banquet costed much more bc my mom insists on having certain dishes...

cakes...
My friend used Fa Da in Flushing for her engagement cake, she paid $180 for a 3 tiered cake for 60 ppl. It tasted ok... your typical chinese cake with mixed fruit filling and whipped cream outside. She was a bit disappointed with how it looked... I thought it was cute! It was heart shaped with scattered rose petals... I have a picture at home, will post later.

The chinese bakers are not known for design. Actually my bro had his cake made by a chinese baker and while they are trying to move it, the cake split in half!
i'm not sure why, maybe they didnt know the right materials to use to hold up the cake?
It was kinda funny. Anyway, I think the perfect cake would be one that's asian tasting inside and american designed outside. :D

What in the world is Per Se???
70,000 for 85 people = $824 per person!!!!
The most expensive place I visited was St. Regis. After gratuity, it would have been $450 per person.

Per Se is at Columbus Circle, it overlooks Central Park South on the West side.
I have been there and it's overrated. Extremely expensive even by NYC standard. I am not surprised they charge so much for a wedding but that that price I expect them to pay for all my wedding cost, not just a few courses.
Sorry you have to draw the line somewhere! We brides may have money to spend but we don't have a kings wallet! :P
