Thank you. It's made by a friend of my mom who's a costume designer for stage. She copied the design mostly from Augusta Jone's design, which I tried on at Kleinfields. The original dress is beautiful in the front, but it has a very high back which made any movement of the arms very difficult, and the beading is a lot simpler. I feel bad about not getting the dress, but I really wanted to be able to do ballroom dance in it, and I just couldn't in the original.
I love your dress... It reminds me of the one Charlotte wore when she married the bald lawyer on Sex in the City!
Do you ballroom dance?? so do I... such a shame tho, I was running around my wedding the whole night, I didn't have time to ballroom dance... plus DH isn't a dancer, so i'd have to technically dance with other men, which probably wouldn't have looked right in front of the family

I ended up booking OUO for dj. This was a very difficult vendor to book for me.
FH and I are super Americanized and would have loved an entirely American style wedding but the MC was important bc I felt we needed the MC to entertain the guests since our parents and their friends would not be dancing.
Can you recommend some Chinese love songs?
I want to play 1 or 2 slow Chinese ballad songs.
FH is useless. He doesn't even know or want to play a Chinese song.

OMG! Kerensa is actually a friend of mine! She'll be choreographing a performance I'll be in at the Waldorf in January! How funny!
Since I'm a ballroomer, I actually had a few ballroom friends teach DH how to swing, salsa and foxtrot. At the reception, we salsa and swing'd a bit, but most of the slow dances were what I call "6th grade prom" style (rocking back and forth!). We hardly had any time to dance, and I'm a hard core dancer. If you have any friends who are dancers, it may be a plus to invite them. Half of my college friends were from ballroom, so my wedding was, as my cousin said, "like watching Dancing with the Stars all night" For beginner dancers, most studios charge package deals. Kerensa is good too, she breaks it down quite nicely. If she's unavailable, FM me, and I can get you in touch with some of my friends.

Would you recommend taking lessons sooner or later (closer to the wedding date)?

i am not sure if you can read chinese on your computer but you can try these chinese songs:
??????? ~ ??? ??????? ~ ??? ???? ~ ???
The first 2 songs are by Jackie Cheung and the last one is by Kelly Chen. OUO should have plenty of Chinese songs to work with too!
edit: in case the chinese isn't going through, here's the pin yin for the songs:
zhi xiang yi sheng gen ni zou ~ zhang xue you mei tian ai ni duo yi xie ~ zhang xue you xing meng qing zhen ~ chen hui lin
oops... forgot to mention all of the above are in canto but most dj'si think may find the song easier if you just give them the mandarin name..

Re: ***~OFFICIAL Chinese Brides Thread!~*** updated w/ cherry blossom/asian flower ideas
here's kerensa's website:
http://www.ballroomdancenyc.com
She charges 75 per lesson unless you get her package deal. I think it's a package of 5 and 10.
I went with 10 'cus I had to learn the waltz and swing. 600 for the package of 10 lessons in the city is great 'cus in the city you have to pay upwards of 70-100 per lesson.
Kerensa has two locations, one near at 8th and 37th st. and another at i believe 68 st near columbus ave.
Both are near transportation and you will get a private studio when you train with her. Thats VERY important 'cus you don't want to be in an open room with other dancers eyes on you, and all the distractions of other dancers and music.
Let me know if you need more information. Most of what you need is on the website. Kerensa is a really sweet pro and you'll get alot of fun working on your dance with her! ;)
If you wanna get less lessons - say for 250, just ask her if she has a 3 pack. Although you can't really even learn enough in 3 lessons. :(

The only Chinese song I had in my entire wedding was in my slide show... the last part, that showed progressive pic of DH and I from dating til our e-pix. It was Jacky Cheung's "To have Someone"; Yaaw Gaw Yun (Canto); You Ge Ren (Mando)
FM me, and I can send the song to you if you can't find it.

Hi Girls.... My friend who recently got married in sept took some dancing classes with a lady located in babylon, LI. Don't quote me on this, but she took 10 dancing lessons and the lady only charged her $100-$150 all together. They looked great when they did their first dance!! let me know if you need her info.....
BTW...anyone uses xanga??!!!!!!
BTW again.....anyone going to the flower michele give away event?? I booked flower michele a while back and his work is so phenominal!!!!

Thanks. It's so great to find another ballroom dancer here. Where do you usually go for dance? It's such a small world I wonder if we've met. I love ballroom dancing -- have been competing in latin for about 6 years now. I actually had a ballroom dj for the wedding -- Alfredo Melendez from Stepping out. He's great -- even got the non-dancers to dance with a 5 minute merengue lesson. I guess it was easier since most of my friends and my parent's friends also ballroom dance (my mom's a dance teacher). FH, however, is a terrible dancer, but I dragged him to class and forced him.

That definitely should be doable. But to get the most out of your lesson what you can do is to buy a basic waltz/foxtrot lesson video (you can get it from Amazon), learn the basic steps, and just get the teacher to do the choreography and polish it up. $250 should cover 3-4 private lessons, which should be more then enough.
I think the best way to do it is to learn it early, and keep practicing it everyday. (even then FH forgot all his steps at the wedding, and we ended up just doing the box step. ) But just have fun. Remember that no matter how badly you mess up, people will still clap like you're the star.

it may be enough if you have abit of background already and just want to have the teacher choreograph your moves and add a couple of moves into your routine.
and if you guys are really good!
dh and i were quick learners but we wanted 10 lessons 'cus we're doing both dances and we never learned the waltz so it helped that kerensa was able to teach us that and polish our swing moves...
she taught us about 1.5 new moves per class so altogether we had about 12 moves we were able to do so our dance didn't look too repetitive...
hope that helps!
