Is anyone EVER successful in not gaining holiday weight? Share your secrets!

Stupid me scheduled my first fitting for 12/27 when Im home for Xmas.

Between my Vegas stomach virus and barely eating this week, Im feeling pretty good about the number on the scale.

But once that plane touches down on LI on Thursday night I know I'll have NO self-control.

Anyone consider themselves a holiday will power goddess? if so, please share HOW!!!

Re: Is anyone EVER successful in not gaining holiday weight? Share your secrets!

Honestly, I consider myself one. I work in an office and our clients for the past 2-weeks have been sending everything from cookies, chocolate, cakes, etc... and they sit right outside my office.

I walk right past it and never touch a thing. I just figure if I do it once, I will never stop so I just don't do it.

I also have been going to so many x-mas parties where there is every type of food and drink in your face, I just stick to the basics of what I would normally eat (Fish, limit myself on the bread, etc..) and not look at it as a time to splurge.

May the force be with you

Re: Is anyone EVER successful in not gaining holiday weight? Share your secrets!

Portion control is key, but try to stay away from pasta, tons of carbs and starch. Potatoes as well. And if you like salt, hold back, or use a salt substitute, thats where alot of our water weight comes from.I know it sounds hard, but if you eat in small portions you should be fine. Also a nice red wine instead of beer. ALOT less calories. HTH.

Re: Is anyone EVER successful in not gaining holiday weight? Share your secrets!

Ok I don't have many good ones but here's what works for me. I drink a glass of skim milk with ligh hershy syrup with dinner. It fills me up so I eat less. For my other meals I try to drink a full glass of warm water or broth before eating. ANd finally don't tell yourself you can't have that cookie. You can eat one or two just stop it at that. What I always tell my sister is I eat one of each cookie not a tray of each cookie. And finally eat slow. Dont try to cram everything in so you can get on with the festivities. Take your time and enjoy each bite. You will eat slower and eat less because your brain will have time to tell your tummy its full. Good luck.

Exercise! I have been running 3 miles a day at least 4 days a week. Haven't gained anything yet, even with occasional cookie or extra glass of wine. Good luck

Re: Is anyone EVER successful in not gaining holiday weight? Share your secrets!

I eat whatever the F i want.. Too much good food around, cant say no! We only live once!

No seriously- I do eat whatever I want, but i try to stay active as much as i can. I also grew up in an Italian house so I was eating pounds and pounds of pasta so maybe my body is immune to it I also have a pretty fast metabolism so I have to sh!t halfway through my meal...

I say EAT UP and enjoy the holiday. Just hit the gym a little more than usual!

Re: Is anyone EVER successful in not gaining holiday weight? Share your secrets!

I'm no help. I start putting on my holiday weight in November and I normally don't take it off until February. I'm trying to be good this year, but it's just so hard with a big Italian family. I am going to my mother's trainer on the 27th so maybe that will give me some motivation.

Re: Is anyone EVER successful in not gaining holiday weight? Share your secrets!

This is going to sound crazy but hey, crazy is my middle name... I look down at my ring LOL I'm not even kidding. I see something sitting there staring at me saying 'Try me, just do it-- everyone is doing it' and I glance down, realize that everyone might be doing it but EVERYONE will be staring at me in a dress pretty soon! So, that helps me keep my azz in line...

I also work out three times a week. I go to Synergy in Ft. Salonga and do cardio-- cardio is great. The elliptical is the best thing for you. I do that with some mild toning (I lift weights to tone my arms, shoulders and back). I even glance down at my ring when I'm getting tired on the elliptical-- it reminds me WHY I'm on there and that I should keep going!

Then, I try to do as many crunches and leg tightening exercises as I can... Stay away from alcohol as much as you can, stay away from fried stuff and just try to not eat SO much... leave some on the plate if you can. And stay away from soda all together- you can drink down so many calories without even realizing it!! It's scary! So drink as much water as humanly possible...

I drink so much water that I feel like I need depends some days haha!

Good luck-- you can do it!!!!

Re: Is anyone EVER successful in not gaining holiday weight? Share your secrets!

I agree with Melissa a bit here too...

Be careful but don't deprive yourself! Life is too short and it's not worth it sometimes to completely restrain yourself.

SIL is on a diet right now and it's so limited that some days- she is miserable and other days- she can't even go out with people (like to dinner) b/c there is literally nothing on the menu for her. I mean, that's not a lifestyle- how can you live like that long term??

Maybe some can- but it is not realistic

I am going to use portion control. I am gonna stay away from alcohol (unnecessary calories). And try to incorporate as much activity as possible.

Re: Is anyone EVER successful in not gaining holiday weight? Share your secrets!

Next holiday season I am going to have to be soo good considering my wedding is 4 days after Christmas, so I'm enjoying the holidays this year, but no going nuts of course. I'm paying close attention to my portion sizes like Mel said. I am also not depriving myself of anything, and just having a taste on things such as dessert.

Good luck!!!
