DIY Wedding Day Makeup? BAD IDEA????

OK....

So I am getting married on a Sunday morning at the RH and I just realized I will have to have a hair stylist come to me. I started to look up places that would do both hair and makeup, but they are SOOOOOOOOO FLIPPIN EXPENSIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So now thta my shock is somewhat subdued....

I am on a budget. I cannot afford to pay the 500+ most of these places are charging. There is one place that charges $150 for the trial of hair and makeup, $100 for wedding day hair and $100 for wedding day makeup. Is that reasonable? I mean it is NJ and not LI but Jersey really isnt that much cheaper lol. You'd be amazed how many NYs live there now and have jacked up all our surburban prices

Is it crazy to get my makeup trial done at someplace like SEPHORA (I was going to try MAC but the girls in the store wore sooooo much badly applied makeup that they scared me...) and then ask them to show me how they apply it so that I can just buy the cosmetics and do my own makeup on the big day? Is that a stupid decision?

I do my own makeup everyday and usually get complimented on it because its pretty natural, but I am concerned that for something like a wedding, you may need heavier applications for the flash and photos....

Everyone that I've asked has said they've done their own makeup on their wedding day and been perfectly happy with it - mostly because they wanted to look like themselves in the pictures, which is a nice touch.

If you're comfortable with doing your own, go for it. Personally, I don't wear makeup all that often (almost never), and I'm considering going the same route - I'd rather spend $300 at a counter learning how to put on makeup I can keep, rather than $300 for a day. Teach a girl to fish....yadda yadda....

Also, if your photographer is going to retouch your photos anyway, the heavier application may not matter as much. My photographer says she can cover blemishes, whiten teeth, and has even been asked to make people 10 pounds lighter.

I went to macys and looked at how the women in their wore their makeup.. After 3 trials (that were free - i don't think you should ever have to pay for a trial) I settled on really sweet, experienced woman who did what I wanted.. I am paying $85 day of .. and my hair is at a great salon in jericho called Salon Trio.. I am paying under $60 for my hair day of .. and they did an amazing job.. or even better than most bridal hair stylists..

I got married a sunday morning also, I had someone come to my house, it wasn't $500. This is a better option to me than when you have to get the salons to open up early, they charge an arm and a leg.

Also try Clinique. Macy's just had a beauty week, but you could still check online to see if they have any bridal events in your area. Clinique will provide a chart with the colors they used for your trial so you can recreate the look on your own. HTH.

How about you try doing some makeup on yourself and taking pictures to see how it comes out? You don't have to have someone do your makeup for you. I could do my own makeup, but Im afraid I will be all nervous that day, so I figure ill let someone else do it for me. But there is nothing wrong if you can do it yourself! I think thats great! Just make sure you dont use spf! It will reflect in the pictures.

I think you could definitely do your own makeup for the big day. My best friend did, and it looked great. ***However*** you should not do a natural face for the big day - you will look washed out with the flash in all your photos. If you want a natural look, then ask a makeup artist to teach you how to do it so that it looks natural without being washed out in pics.

For myself, as much as I enjoy doing my own makeup and am ok at it, I know for the big day I don't want to be nervous about applying my makeup and possibly messing it up etc. For just my peace of mind, I'd rather pay to have it done. I'm using Mia of BridalLounge and it's not so expensive. Your quote doesn't sound bad either!

I too was totally against paying for make up but a few things changed my mind:

My cousin decided at the last minute to get a make up lady to come to her house. Well, the night before she had an allergic reaction and broke out into hives and her face swelled up. Without the calming presence of the make up artist my cousin would not have been able to get married that day. I think they definitely do a better job with blemishes etc.

I did my own makeup for my engagement pictures - I had on blush, bronzer and eye shadow. In the pictures, it looks like I am wearing NO makeup and I feel SO washed out. When I take regular pictures, i love the way my makeup looks. But the professional pictures? I hated the way I came out!

And finally, I know when I have a big day i am a mess and if i messed something up I would have a break down.

I know the makup will probably look better if they do it, but I just cannot afford 400 bucks for hair and makeup day of, because I will have to color my hair beforehand, get manicure and pedicure and eyebrows waxed...its ALOT of cash as is and I am not working much right now so FH is paying for most of it. He doesnt get the 'beauty stuff' as he calls it. Considers it a waste of money so I really have to try and consolidate.

I know MAC is supposed to be great but those girls had on sooooo much makeup...it looked horrible! And hey back in HS LOL for senior pictures when i wore FAR less, the photographer complimented me on my makeup-said it was the best application he'd seen in awhile. When I redid my photos (original ones used wrong backdrop first time and second day another girlfriend of mine did my makeup with her kit cause I forgot mine) he noticed that someone else had done it and said I should have stuck to doing it myself. So maybe I stilll have the knack :)

Vintage, is she coming to your place day of are or you going to her? I have to have someone come to me because I have to have me hair and makeup done by no later than 10am because we are taking bulk of our photos before the ceremony which starts at 11:30 am. I love Macys, but which brand are you using? Usually the cosmetics girls stick to what they sell and I never use all of same brand-like diff brands for eye shadow, foundation, etc

Thanks, but what did you pay about? Everywhere I have looked in NJ to come to me, has quoted me about $500 so if you have a lower number I should aim for, it would be helpful to know what it is.

THANKS GINA! I didn’t know that about the SPF-Always wear it in my moisturizer and ym usual foundation. Heh trying to protect from the sun. will keep that tip in mind because I don’t want to be a blinding spot of tan light on the big day lol.

Many LI vendors will prob travel.... I think you should get it done professionally, just so you're not stressed the day of doing it yourself. Mine was more than I wanted to spend also, but I cut out some other things to make it happen... I used Carmella from Happily Ever After who is a vendor on here, she does both hair and makeup and I def. didn't spend $500! Maybe $250 tops!

Did this include the trial? Thats whats really bgging me. The trials are SOOO expensive! Almost as much as the day itself and my hair is really short so I don't like the idea of being charged the same amount as a bride who has hair down to her hoo hah.

They're based out of queens...u can ask them if they'll come to NJ...I don't know if they'll charge a travel fee and how much that would be

Ok guys..so LI vendors are out for me because most of them charge an extra 50.00 per hour of travel time and from visiting fam in LI during the summer, I know that can be a 2-2 1/2 hour trip.

yeah, the whole hair and make-up thing is sooooo $$$$$ and you have to book soooooo far in advance. totally disheartening!

I avoided the make-up issue becuase my best friend (who has done make-up for some indie movies, and fashion shoots) will be doing it...

If I were you, I'd likely do it myself.

I am somewhat in a DIY situation,m because I'm selecting the make-up I will be wearing. My everyday make-up is this organic stuff that wears off quickly, and I wanted something that would last all day, so I've been researching and shopping for high quality long lasting stuff with my friend.

FM me if you want to know the details of which primer, make-up, eye stuff, and blush brands we researched online, tested in stores, and ended up purchasing for longevity and product quality

i'm pretty sure i'm doing my own makeup. as much as i think it'd be fun to get a professional job, i can't justify spending hundreds of dollars for a trial (you may have to do more than once) and then the day of. plus, i just don't think anyone's gonna be able to do it exactly the way i want. i'm just going to invest in some nice makeup that i'll be able to use in the future and play around a bit until i get the look i want for the day of.

Betani, I am leaning towards your line of thinking. I have had my makeup done ebfore-twice by people at Sephora, once by Estee Lauder and once by Clinique and EVERYTIME I hated it. I was like 'this is it? I had to buy 50 bucks of makeup for this?' I mean maybe professionals are bettr because they do it for photography but...... I know SEPHORA last time I was there (Spoke to a salesgirl with great makeup) has some freelancers who work for them but also in the industry. She recommended the guy who did her makeup the day i admired it. Going to have to try and track him down. If he can at leats do my makeup and colors and show me how he applies it, I can try to duplicate it. I'd really rather spend booku bucks on a fabulous spa treatment in Dominican Republic on our HM!

Also, SEPHORA is great in that they let you return makeup, even if its been used. If you hate it, you just bring it back with the reciept. Its why i shop there because otherwise you end up with drawerfuls of bad makeup.
