FUMING MAD - I Freakin' HATE the post office - Updated

I had my invitations with EVERYTHING inside them weighed TWICE by the post office before I bought the stamps - and then I paid for custom stamps through Zazzle (literally DOUBLE the price for regular stamps) b/c they didn't have any freakin' wedding stamps.

They hand canceled my invites.

The responses and return address are to my parents' house. My parents went away. Their neighbor is getting their mail. She called my parents today to tell them that SEVEN of my invitations came back for postage due.

W T F???????????????????????

I know many people got them, but who the hell knows how many more will come back tomorrow or the next day?

I don't know if I have enough envelopes to fix this. I paid $$$ for the invites, the hand calligraphy, etc. THIS IS A FREAKING NIGHTMARE!!

OMG, what am I going to do?!?!?!?!??!?

******************UPDATE
UPDATE: My father happens to have a friend who is the head of a different post office in Manhattan. He was nice enough to have someone check to make sure there are no more invitations in the processing area at that post office to be returned. (In other words, it looks like it will just be the ones that were returned Saturday - though I guess it's possible more will come today???)

At any rate, he said when I have the new envelopes ready, he will meet me at his post office and manually walk them through the system to make sure they don't get returned. He said if all the others went through (and I have confirmation that many were delivered from those that got them), then these should have gone through, too.

He was really nice about it... My parents' neighbor said she does calligraphy and would re-do the outer envelopes, but I need to meet this guy tomorrow. If she can't do them tonight (and I wouldn't expect she'll have time to do them tonight), I will have to settle for handwriting the outer envelopes so I can get them out tonight. At least it's just these 7... that no more come back today!

Re: FUMING MAD - I F*cking HATE the post office

Kara, I'd be pissed too. I can't believe that! I wonder what the exact error was. If I were you, I would go to the post office that you got them weighed at and mailed them from and talk to them and tell them what happend.

Hopefully no others get returned.

I plan to do just that -- but I can't mail these with giant 'POSTAGE DUE' stamps on them.

My calligraphy artist is in Staten Island - I'd have to take a day off from work to get the envelopes to her and have them back in time to mail them out again.

I called a few people, all of whom got the invites. I am hoping it's just these few. But what if it's not?

I am so upset right now. I didn't everything right - I had them weighed at TWO post offices.

The irritating thing is that they are coming back saying 'Postage Due $0.34' -- $.34?!?!?!? They hae $0.63 stamps on them. You're telling me these 7 magically need almost a dollar in postage?

Give me a break. They can't compensate me for the additional price I paid for the custom stamps or the $ I spent on hand calligraphy.

I don't know whether to scream or cry - right now I'm hysterical. I can't stop crying.

Re: FUMING MAD - I F*cking HATE the post office

Dont go postal! Lol! Sorry bad joke! It will all be okay. Do you have extra envelopes and stamps and stuff? Is it just the caligraphy that would be a pain in the butt or are you short materials as well?

Re: FUMING MAD - I F*cking HATE the post office

I have extra envelopes - the calligraphy artist has two extras in her possession. I have about 20 here. I'm not sure if I should drive to Staten Island today to drop them off or what... I have no idea what to do. I'm so upset.

I know this may sound far fetched but can you Federal Express the envelopes via overnight to the calligrapher and have them FedEx them back you the same way?

They are saying you need an additoinal .34? That's crazy!

Would there be a reason why these envelopes would be so much more in postage? Did you maybe put hotel info in them or somethign and not include it in the others? Is there something you could have done differently with these 7 envelopes? Are they all domestic?

I am just trying to think of things that woudl cause this problem.

Re: FUMING MAD - I Freakin' HATE the post office

We had a similar problem with my daughter's invitations but fortunately none of them were returned. There seems to be a lot of confusion at the Post Office about the new rates. We mailed my daughter's invitations on 5/21 and we double checked the postage before mailing them. We were told that the postage of 63 cents was adequate. We know of one person who had to pay an additional 34 cents at their post office box when they picked up the invitation. We are hoping that everyone received the invitation. We have been getting responses so I guess that's a good sign.

Here is a link to the new postage rates. Any over sized envelope over 1 ounce is now 97 cents to mail - outrageous! I believe there may also be an issue with very small envelopes but I think the standard response envelope will be ok with 41 cents but you may what to check before mailing invitations. Hope this helps!

Okay, the reason they're probably more in postage is b/c of their size (I'm guessing). Mine are an unusual size (they're really big) and b/c of that the post office said they're no longer in the first class category, they're in the flat rate category, and that's why they're $.97. They don't sell $.97 stamps, so I had to order stamps thru zazzle for $1.11 each, and I ended up paying almost $400 in postage for both the invite and the return! So I'm guessing your invites are similar, and the clerk at the post office made a mistake. If mine were a centimeter shorter on both sides they would've been $.63

Re: FUMING MAD - I Freakin' HATE the post office

But we went to a person, NOT just a scale and asked about the postage BEFORE he started to hand cancel them. We were told it was fine.

This shouldn't have happened and doesn't explain why many of the invitations WERE delivered. Only 7 were returned - I've confirmed that more than that were delivered.

We did the right thing - I'm not paying for the post office's mistake.

Not to mention the fact that they RUINED all of the outer envelopes (which with postage + calligraphy + the invites that were ruined in the meantime) are anywhere from $5-10 per invite.

Re: FUMING MAD - I Freakin' HATE the post office

I had to send out a few invitations after my calligrapher finished everything-- so instead of going back to her I just printed them out on my home computer with a nice font & they turned out great!!! (just practice a few times on something else to make sure you have everything lined up correctly --- don't ruin your 20 envelopes getting it right!!!)
I almost wish I didn't spend the money on the calligrapher! Maybe you can do that for the few that have been returned.
I know it s**ks but don't worry-- It will work out fine!

Re: FUMING MAD - I Freakin' HATE the post office

What if you mail the new envelopes with the stamps in one big envelope and once the calligrapher is done fixing them she could just send them out in the mail for you. Trying to save you the trip to S.I.

Re: FUMING MAD - I Freakin' HATE the post office

Kara,
We are so sorry that you are going through this. You need to speak with the supervisor of
the post office. You two did everything perfectly with the invitations. It is the post office that made a big mistake that they should be responsible in taking care of.
