LOCKS OF LOVE (Formally Planning to cut your LONG hair following the wedding?) Short Haircut Advice Needed!

Hello ladies, I was planning to give my hair a bit of a post-wedding shortening, and heard about this wonderful organization called 'Locks of Love'.

I've got to grow one more inch, and then I'll be able to donate 10' which is the minimum. Anyone want to join me? I've always had long hair, and never cut off more then 4' at a time, so this is going to be quite tramatic! But what great motivation!

LOCKS OF LOVE

Here is the description from their web site: Locks of Love is a non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children across the U.S. under age 18 suffering from long-term medical hair loss. We meet a unique need for children throughout the United States by using donated hair to create the highest quality hair prosthetics. Most of the children helped by Locks of Love have lost their hair due to a medical condition called alopecia areata, which has no known cause or cure. The prostheses we provide help to restore their self-esteem and their confidence, enabling them to face the world and their peers.

Re: Planning to cut your LONG hair following the wedding?

This is wonderful - one of my good friends did this last year.

I wish I could but my hair, while long, will not grow to the required length.

But I applaud those who can and who do!!

Re: Planning to cut your LONG hair following the wedding?

what a great idea. I cut my hair after the wedding, but only about 4-5 inches.

If you're going to cut that much off anyway, you might as well give it to someone who may need it!

Re: Planning to cut your LONG hair following the wedding?

Believe it or not, I lopped 3 inches off my hair the night BEFORE the wedding! I couldn't taje it anymore! But I knew that I had more than enough hair to go for the up-do I wanted. I knew that I would have no time between the wedding and HM to go for a cut!

Re: Planning to cut your LONG hair following the wedding?

My 10-year old niece did this several months ago! She cut off 12' !! We were so proud of her since it was her own idea! I actually plan to do this sometime after the New Year! I have long, thick hair. It's been long for over 15 years!! I hope I don't chicken out!!

I think it's a wonderful thing to do!!

Re: Planning to cut your LONG hair following the wedding?

Kathi, lets be hair buddies. Like you I've always had long hair, from as soon as I grew it the first time - so hmmm must be 20 years for me LOL. For a few years I've thought I'd be better off with short hair, but I just couldn't make it happen. I'm hoping that the good cause will put me over the edge, and could use some peer pressure from you as well! hehe

Re: Planning to cut your LONG hair following the wedding?

Hi Claud!! Thanks for noticing I've been a bit light on my posts lately!! Settling into the new house has been quite hectic!! That, and the fact that DH blew up our computer when he plugged it in for the 1st time!! We can't get a new one until after the New Year, now that we know it will cost just as much to fix the old one!! ARGH!!!

Valenia: I need a hair buddy!! Every time I get out of the shower and start the task of brushing my hair, I tell DH 'I hate my hair, I have to cut it!' I really want to do this!! I can, right? We can, right?! LOL

Re: Planning to cut your LONG hair following the wedding?

Kathi - too funny! For me the usual conversation happens in bed. DH tries to hug me, and I say 'OW! You are lying on my hair again!' It kind of ruins many a sweet moment. heheh

Kathi we should totally do this, and post our before and after photos, so everyone can reassure us we didn't make a huge mistake -- Hey, and if we did make a huge mistake, we've done a good deed and it will grow back!

Ladies, I commend you for considering such a compassionate gesture. I actually knew a little girl who benefited from this organization, and the generosity of people like you.

Re: Planning to cut your LONG hair following the wedding?

6/21/03 - Thanks for the info, its so great that your salon helps out! There are many salons listed on the Locks of Love web site, and I was able to find one near me in Boston that will do the haircut. I'm looking forward to going there more for the knowledge that they will collect the hair properly, then for the free cut -- but that is a nice bonus!

Re: Planning to cut your LONG hair following the wedding?

free hair cut...that is a bonus! I sent out my hair about 5 years ago to L.O.L, then a month later my sister cut hers and sent hers off too! It is getting long again, and I think its time to join you ladies in cutting it all off....just cant decide if I should wait until after my sisters wedding (march 23) or not...

Re: Planning to cut your LONG hair following the wedding?

Yay CarrieAnn! Its so great that you and your sister have done this. If you wait til after that means even more length, and from what I read the girls especially want LONG hair... so waiting would be a good thing!

Re: Planning to cut your LONG hair following the wedding?

I'm hoping that my hair will still be shoulder length after it's cut!! I don't think I'm ready for truly 'short' hair yet!! It's been so many years of longgggggggg hair!!

I am looking forward to it, though!! In February, or April, or July, or.... hee hee!! j/k
No chickening out!

Re: Planning to cut your LONG hair following the wedding?

Before you cut you should check out the moon cycle...I know it sounds crazy, but there are times you can cut your hair that will promote growth and times that will inhibit growth (old legends, indian in origin I do believe)
