anyone picking out a color and letting bridesmaids pick the style of dresses?

This is what I want to do because I was in 2 of my cousins weddings and hated the dresses they made me wear so I sat in the corner the whole night. This way I figure my girls would be comfortable in their dress. Whoever my mom is against this she thinks everyone should be uniform and I know what you are gonna say its ure day u should do what u want but they are paying for it and i want to make them happy. Is anyone doing this or been to a wedding were they did this how did it look? I have never seen it done I just really like the idea!

Re: anyone picking out a color and letting bridesmaids pick the style of dresses?

That is what I did.I picked the color and told my BMs they could pick whatever style they wanted.
They all liked the same one. Isn't that funny?

Re: anyone picking out a color and letting bridesmaids pick the style of dresses?

I let my 2 MOH's (that's all I'm having) basically choose 1 dress they both liked. It was pretty easy since there are only 2. But, I think it can look so nice to have them in different styles but the same color - I think if they feel more comfortable they look better any way. I'm pretty sure there are a number of girls on here who either are doing that or have done it.

Re: anyone picking out a color and letting bridesmaids pick the style of dresses?

I did the same thing. I picked the color and let them get a dress they would be comfortable with. The dresses aren't cheap, and I wanted them to be comfortable. Same as Novemberbride, their dresses were so similar, it looked good. But now a days, a lot of bridal parties are not uniform so I say go for it. Maybe do a search and find some pics where the girls are in different dresses and show them to your mom so she can see what it looks like.

I did that. I picked a color and let them pick any Dessy/After-six dress they wanted. 6 different dresses and everyone loved theirs. It looked great too!

Re: anyone picking out a color and letting bridesmaids pick the style of dresses?

I am choosing the color 'wine/red', but giving my girls the chance to choose the dress. I told them I like the dresses from David's Bridal that all have the same color, but differnet styles. I also want the girls to be able to wear the dress they choose again for any kind of formal affair, so I am very flexable.

Re: anyone picking out a color and letting bridesmaids pick the style of dresses?

It would be wonderful if I had the inner ability to let go...but I do not, and therefore I will control every single little thing I can about my wedding

But I am thinking of letting my one bm who has a MAJOR complex about her arms wear short sleeves...

Re: anyone picking out a color and letting bridesmaids pick the style of dresses?

That is what I am doing for my wedding. My sister did that several months ago and I think it looked great. She told us to get a lavender dress and we bought whatever we wanted. Everyone had a completely different dress and I think it looked very pretty. I decided to do the same because it is easier especially since my BM's are all out of state. One of my girls bought her dress at JC Penney's, and another is buying off of the internet. The other two are still looking.

Re: anyone picking out a color and letting bridesmaids pick the style of dresses?

I picked out the color and dress but kept in mind the different body types and chose something that would flatter them all.

When I was in my sister's bridal party, the dress was two pieces and we all wore different tops...some strapless, some with sleeves, some with straps. It looked really nice.

You should do what you feel comfortable with.

Re: anyone picking out a color and letting bridesmaids pick the style of dresses?

I did it and loved it. I picked color, mfg and material and they had about 30 dresses they could choose from. I know some traditional people thought it was strange but no one said anything to my face. I have also been in a bridal party where the bride did it and I loved it. I don't have a picture of that one though.

I feel like if the BM is happy in what she is wearing that will show up better in pictures than unformity. (PS Doing this style did not make the chore of the girls finding and getting dresses much easier like I thought it would.)

Remember it is your wedding and do what you like.

Here's a picture from my wedding (I had 6 girls and 4 different style dresses were chosen - I used Dessy/After Six):

Niecey,

I love the color of the dresses that your BMs wore. What is the name of the color?

I did it - and my BM's loved me for it! I'm also using a wine color. Every girl looks great and comfortable, so the pictures will look great!
Good luck

Re: anyone picking out a color and letting bridesmaids pick the style of dresses?

i did it too. my MOHs are in a bluish purple, and the BMs in violet. i picked the color and material and they got 30 choices to choose from and 2 different manufacturers (Watters & watters and Jim Hjelm use the same exact satin backed taffeta).

i do caution however that it did not make the process any easier (ahh drama) but i think the girls are happier!!

What i originally was going to do was allow them all to get whatever they wanted in shades of blue and purple (i figured, if it is not the same material, shooting for the exact same color can be tough and different shades look better than trying to be uniform in color and failing miserably). I love this picture that has exactly what i would have wanted. Unfortunately, all of these dresses are like $500.

It is your day, and they will be 'happy' to please you, but they will also be appreciative of you wanting to be different and help them be more comfortable!! Good luck!

Re: anyone picking out a color and letting bridesmaids pick the style of dresses?

I did the same thing because two of my bridesmaids are bigger sizes than the other two. Plus I have a collection of ugly dresses in my closet. They picked what they liked best and in what price range. It wasn't something I necessarily would have picked to wear for myself but they were happy with it and we got a lot of compliments on the dresses and I came out looking like a great bride for not being a psycho about things. They also picked their shoes, what to do with their hair, and makeup etc. Better to keep them happy and worry about how I looked!
