Teachers.....

So, I found out today from someone I work with that tomorrow administrators will be doing 'pop-ins' or informal observations...I'm sooo nervous bc its my first year in a new school and even though it's my 4th year teaching, it almost feels like I'm starting all over again bc everting is sooo different in this school. (I went from LI to NYC) bc I live in NYC. Do you ladies still get that nervous felling when you get observes, I thought it would get better and better and I would feel less and less nervous, but no. I'm still a nervous wreck! lol

Re: Teachers.....

I am on my 6th year and still hate it. I always have good kids and they always work with you when people are in the room but you cant help but second guess your actions.

I know, and IMO I feel like it's so NOT natural to have others just stare at you for such a long period of time while they critisize and judge everthing that you do. I've been fortunate to have good observations so far but it's always stressful! BC you never know what they're going to think.

I wish!! This year I work at a JHS with double periods (90 min) so I was told that they observe the entire 90 minutes!! I think that's crazy! Thanks for the advice by the way....

Re: Teachers.....

I'm in my 16th year and always get surprise observations, it gets much easier...Especially knowing I have tenure and they can't fire me unless I basically assault or have sex with one of my students. Always remember they need to find something to criticize otherwsie they wouldn't be making you a better teacher.

The funny thing is I teach criminal law in high school and always get observed around the same time when I discuss rape and have to explain that it is not called rape when one guy does another guy up the butt. Then I have to get into sodomy...luckily my principal thinks I handle the situtation well and kids feel comfortable asking me those types of questions.

I agree that knowing you have tenure, you prob feel less pressure or less stressed out anyway. It's so messed up what some of these districts do sometimes. I hear of excellent teachers being 'let go' bc just ONE of their 8 their observationsover the course of 3 years weren't satisfactory (and I think it's a joke that satisfactory is the highest level of a rating you are able to get)

Re: Teachers.....

I am in the same boat. I am in a new NYC school and I just got observed. It went really well and as long as you are in control and can get your LO across you are good. I had the post observation meeting today and I was open and listened to suggestions and it was fine. Relax you are very capable and will do great!

WOW 90 minutes really???? I'm sorry to hear that... what subject matter do you teach? Well in the 90 minutes you can teach, then have the students do group work which can take some time from her watching lol

Re: Teachers.....

I've been teaching for 5 years and I still hate the observation. I just try to forget that they are in the room and I just do what I have to. The time that I start getting really nervous is when I watch them take notes while I'm speaking...It kinda throws me off..

Good luck

Re: Teachers.....

Well, if it's an informal observation they can't write you up on anything they don't like but you're right... it's my fourth year too and I'm still nervous.

Re: Teachers.....

In speaking with all teachers 2-25 yrs experieince...the feeling never goes away. I am in my 2nd year as a social worker in a public school and I have to hold a counseling session with students while being observed!! The poor kids sometimes have such a hard time sharing with a different face in the room listening to their private feelings etc. My Principal was a social worker before alos so that makes it even more difficult bc they know the ins and outs of my profession and could easily tell if I screwed up during an observation...so far though I have done well!!

Always remember they will give you some criticism no matter what bc they want you to learn something!! Be open minded to any ideas instead of defensive Good luck you are competent, and great @ what you do..they wouldn't have hired you if you weren't!!
