Pirates News, World News Kenya (Dec. 2) - Pirates chased and shot at a U.S. cruise ship with more than 1,000 people on board but failed to hijack the vessel as it sailed along a corridor patrolled by international warships, officials said Tuesday.
The captain of the M/S Nautica ordered passengers inside and gunned the engine, allowing the ship to outrun the pirates' speedboats in the Gulf of Aden on Sunday, a company spokesman said.

On Sunday, a band of pirates on two skiffs tried to intercept the liner, firing off eight shots. But the ship's captain increased speed and outran the bandits. The Nautica, carrying 1,000 people, arrived safely in Oman.

'When the pirates were sighted, the captain went on the public address system and asked passengers to remain in the interior spaces of the ship and wait until he gave further instructions,' said Tim Rubacky, spokesman for Oceania. 'Within five minutes, it was over,' he said.
All passengers and crew are safe and there was no damage to the vessel, the company statement said. Rubacky said the ship planned to return through the Gulf of Aden.

Pirates have been a problem for all of history, (the history major in me) but they are particularly bad right now. Caribbean Cruises should not be effected but if your planning a cruise around Somalia or around Asia, I would think twice. This has been a serious problem for several years now, it effects my fathers business a bit because of insurance for things he ships, but its getting worse and quickly.

Pirates have always been a problem off the coast of Africa....Unless that is where you are planning your cruise you will most likely not have a problem

are they like the pirates you see in the movies?? I am really fascinated by this. I know its horrible what they did and all, I just honestly had no idea they existed for real. God I sound so dumb right now....

this also happened a few weeks ago but on a cargo ship or something else. This is the 2nd time in a month i hear about pirates attacking a ship. I said the same thing and DH laughed at me and said yes Denise there are pirates today but not like you see in the movies. Made me feel like i was stupid for not knowing lol, like who knows this stuff

No, dont worry... I thought the same thing... and everytime I think of a pirate, I think of a person with a wooden leg, a patch over their eye, and a bird on their shoulder lol.... I had no clue they are really around.... what do they do exactly... I'm so confused lol
