My Super Budget-ed, somehow still Beautiful (Vegetarian) Wedding Day! With PHOTOS! Swan Club, Vintage String Quartet, FM DJs, Khouloud's, Verbena Designs, Twelfth Night, Legend Limos...

My Super Budget-ed, somehow still Beautiful (Vegetarian) Wedding Day(s)!

I have been asked to post my review a few times and I'm sorry it took me so long to get around to it. For anyone with a budget wedding, I hope my wedding review will be of help to you! My day was very inexpensive thanks to three things: 1, lots of DIY! 2, the book BRIDAL BARGAINS (So essential!!!!!) and 3, well researched vendors.

FYI: I had two weddings, one here in Long Island, and another in Hawaii, so I'll quickly review the one in Hawaii afterwards, but I won't spend much time on it.

I just want to thank LIW so, so much. I was mostly a lurker on these boards except when I was dealing with vendors. 'How can I get a cheap but good florist/photographer/catering hall?' I asked again and again, and I am happy to say that virtually all my vendors resulted from your suggestions here! You also helped me plan a wedding as a Manhattanite with no car, which was a difficult thing to do, to be sure! But I couldn't be happier with the outcome, as you'll probably be able to tell from the surplus of A+'s. Anyway, here's my review!!

Engagement Ring: Blue Nile (www.bluenile.com) and Nur (Diamond District)
A+

I was so happy with the engagement ring my husband picked out for me. I wanted a one-stone ring, but was intrigued by three stone rings. He picked out the center diamond on Blue Nile- they let you plug in all of the qualities you are looking for, cut, clarity, and so forth, as well as the price range you can shop within. The diamond he picked out is stunning, and it captures light beautifully. Nur then added the two side stones and finished the piece. They also cleaned and polished my ring before the wedding, and were overall just really friendly and easy to deal with. I had a great experience with both services, and would definitely recommend them.

Stationary: Einvite (www.einvite.com), Ebay (Favors For You: http://myworld.ebay.com/madtean/), and DIY
A+++
I can't rave enough about Einvite. They sell probably the most inexpensive and the widest variety of wedding invites I've ever seen. And it's really high quality. You can order a cheap sample of any invite. Ours used thermography, which really looks great, and had a beautiful calla lily design.

From Ebay, we ordered custom made return postcards. I know most people are into the cards in envelopes, but I've got to say, I saw nothing against the postcards, they saved us on postage, and this service we found designed a card to match our invitations both in font and with a calla lily design for cheap!

Calligraphy: Inkspun (http://inkspun.com/)
A+
Wow, Inkspun is a huge money saver! We didn't see the point in spending a few dollars a person to have someone by hand write out addresses on envelopes, one of the little minute details of the invitation. But Inkspun's computer calligraphy system works great. You send them your envelopes, and they print them out with the addresses in a beautiful font of your choice! The owner is very friendly and quick to respond to emails and calls. The finished product was wonderful, although we got the invitations out in such a hurry, we don't have a picture to show to prove it! But trust us, they are a great money-saving service, are super professional, and just all around do a great job.

Bridal Shower: Melbas
C-

Melba's was so annoying. I loved my shower, because it was a surprise, and because so many people I love and haven't seen in a long time were there, but they dropped our reservation, we waited at the bar for it to open forever, and crowded us in with not enough chairs so we barely fit, and they actually forgot to make several people's meals and screwed up a whole lot of other stuff. Horrible service! Agghh! But the food was okay, so they don't fail completely. Anyway, it's in Harlem, so it's not really a Long Island vendor, and I won't dwell on it anymore :)

Rehearsal Dinner: Charlie Brown's Steakhouse
A+

Oh, the budget. We just couldn't afford a rehearsal dinner, but our family were all around the world and had never met, so we definitely wanted them to meet before hand. So, we had to get creative: who would let only 18 some odd people have a private room for a really cheap rate? Here enters Charlie Brown Steakhouse. The food was great, and the salad bar there is so awesome! They have a private room at Garden City that fit everyone very nicely. We had a great time!

As you can see, the menu was to please our meat-loving family before the big vegetarian day:

Dress/Alterations: RK Bridal, Maggie Sottero
B+ for RK, A+++ forever for Maggie Sottero

First of all, Maggie Sottero was my dream line for weddings. I loved all the Maggie gowns I tried on. I really wanted a corseted gown with some sort of floral embellishment, to match the garden setting at Swan Club. Maggie Sottero is KNOWN for corset gowns, and they are all really unique, and really, really affordable, especially compared to similar lines! Corsets, by the way, save you on alterations, because if you lose or gain a little weight, you just tighten the corset ties accordingly! Food for thought :)
I saw the winning choice on the Maggie Sottero site, but I didn't think much of it, until I stumbled upon it wandering through RK Bridal. It was a corset gown with flower embellishments, but never in my life had I thought I'd go for an asymmetrical dropped waist. So you just never know until you try it on :) The fabric and detailing were top notch, and by the time my wedding day came around, I was convinced the dress had been designed for me.

That said, RK Bridal gives pretty good service and discounted prices. They aren't exactly the best with customer service. You often feel a little on your own when you are there. But when it came time for alterations, the woman who helped me was very kind to me, and the fittings went really well... except, well, I really hated my bustle. In a way I guess they were right, that it would be hard to do the bustle any other way because of the unusual waist line, but I was more than a little disappointed with the finished result- a convoluted 7 or 8 someodd button bustle that made the dress poof out awkwardly. My bridesmaid in charge of it had forgotten how to do that confusing bustle and before my reception, I had my bridal attendant and maitre'd frantically pulling at fabric trying to figure out how to bustle it. All that work, for a bustle I don't even like? Oh well. Here's a shot of my ugly bustle:

But, they were cheap. I'll give you that! One word of caution; check with the size chart for the brand you pick before you buy; they try to convince you to buy something bigger than you need. They kept pushing for a size 8, but I forcibly told them I wanted a size 6, and what do you know, it fit perfectly. They just want more money for alterations. So those two complaints downgrade them to a B+, but I still recommend them in terms of being great bargain bridal shop.

Shoes: My glass slipper (http://www.myglassslipper.com/)
A+
I wore flats, and I'll never regret that. They were so, so comfortable. I ordered my ballet flats, worried, as I usually am about buying shoes or clothing on the internet, but My Glass Slipper shipped me a pair of wedding shoes with the guarantee I could return them if needed. I've heard some people actually order several and return the ones they don't want, but I was completely satisfied with the pair they sent me! They were soft and padded, and I didn't even think about my feet once the whole day. It was like wearing a pair of comfy slippers.

Veil: Ebay!
A

Ebay has so many options for veils; you can get one for so much less than you would have to pay in a wedding boutique and gown shop. Mine was a two tier veil with white satin fringe. It came on a plastic comb, which isn't necessarily the best, but my hair dresser worked with it and it came out fine when it came time to take it out. I couldn't be happier with my choice.

Jewelry: Mimi (my late grandmother, with the help of Nur!)
So, for the something old, I really wanted to wear a pair of earrings made from a series of flowers forms from diamonds and emeralds that once were part of a necklace of my grandmother's. She had had sections put on earring poles for me to wear as earrings, but the jeweler had left the stems on the flowers, and the earring pole was poorly designed, so they were kind of awkward earrings. Nur really helped make my wish to wear something of hers on my wedding day come true- they trimmed the stems and recentered a pole on the earrings, resulting in a pretty pair of diamond flower earrings for my big day, to wear with my something borrowed (a diamond ring my grandmother had given to my sister). I felt like I had my grandmother with me the whole day.

Tuxedos: Men's Wearhouse
A

We had groomsmen coming from all over the country for our wedding, so Men's Wearhouse was pretty much our only option. But they were great! Everyone looked snazzy, and, sure, the cuff links weren't top quality, but that's such a little detail, and the price was really great. Besides, they had vests in a color that matched the bridesmaids great! And if you aren't satisfied with the fit, they really do their best to hem it accordingly; my husband's tux was way too long when it came in, but they quickly fixed it, and all was well. All around, I thought the boys looked very handsome!

Bridesmaid Dresses: David's Bridal
A

David's Bridal is an awesome choice for bridesmaid gowns, because it saves your bridesmaids money, and they are already doing so much for you. You can find a huge variety of gowns that come in so many sizes and colors, and there are locations all over the place, which is great when you have bridesmaids coming from all over the country as I did! I went for a dress in a nice comfy jersey fabric, and thank God I did, since my sister got pregnant after everyone ordered their gowns, and needed the stretching room! I thought my girls looked stunning, and one mentioned that since the fabric is so versatile she plans to cut the dress knee length and wear it again as a nice summery dress. Yay!

Makeup: Zoraida at Khouloud's Beauty
A+

Zoraida was so amazing. I wasn't even planning on having a makeup artist, but come the day of, I realized there is no way I could have ever done it myself. I stressed to her that since I don't wear makeup usually, I don't want my husband to not even recognize me on the day. She guaranteed she would give me a natural, polished summer bride look. My trial went well. We did the makeup light, took pictures, and then put more on, to give me options to go over with the hubbie-to-be. But come the day of, she really blew me away. We were running late and she did my makeup probably in under 10 minutes, so I was terrified, but then it came out really, really well. She is also just really friendly and fun to talk to. I would recommend her in a heartbeat.

Hair: Kacey at Khouloud's Beauty
A

Kacey really did an outstanding job on my hair for the wedding. She listened carefully at my trial to everything I was looking for, and even though I didn't have any one picture that looked anything like what I actually wanted, she somehow understood and managed to get my ridiculously long hair bundled up into a beautiful up-do. When she had computer trouble and lost all of my trial pictures, I had a bit of trouble getting a hold of her and started to go into panic mode, but she then turned my weary opinion around again and had me in for a complimentary second trial. Morning of, she came on time, her sociable self (even at 6am!) and my hair looked even better than it did in either of the first trials, and stayed put the whole day. She's really fun and easy to work with, and is very professional about her work. Khouloud's was such a great service!!!

Ceremony/Reception: Swan Club
A+

Wow. The Swan Club was amazing. This was one of the least expensive places I looked at, and honestly, I have no idea why (but I hope they keep it that way!). Swan Club is simply stunning. Aesthetically, I just loved that Swan Club isn't simply a gated catering hall blocked off from a highway, but a secluded spot right on the harbor. Their ceremony room was gorgeous, letting the sunlight flood in but not making me worry about rain or wind like I would with an outdoor wedding. The staff is outstanding. I had Christian originally for my maitre'd, but he left before it even started to get time to talk regularly, so all I know is that the maitre'd who stepped in for him, Vanessa, was really amazing. She was helpful, honest, and encouraging. VEGETARIANS: Swan Club. That's all I have to say. They were great, creating a vegetarian menu that was outstanding; they even worked with me when I said that I was longing for some sort of tofu version of one of their meat dishes for the cocktail hour, and they were completely game to work with that, and, as far as I know from my guests (I missed the cocktail hour!) it was delicious. What I do know is that the food at the reception was outstanding, and many guests commented about it. Mind you, almost everyone there was a meat eater (even my husband!) so that is really saying something! And one of the best things about them is that they are ready to listen and work creatively, not necessarily by the book of how an American wedding is supposed to look. Our ceremony was super untraditional- since we're Baha'is, a religion with no clergy or elder system, we chose not to have an officiant we didn't know stand up and talk for a while, but instead had our bridesmaids and groomsmen share prayers and readings, and the staff encouraged us, saying that they've seen all sorts of different styles of weddings, so why not? And Baha'is don't drink, but Swan Club jumped on that, too, providing a slew of mocktails and sparkling ciders throughout the day. Sure, there were a few things that they screwed up on here and there; but every time they messed some little thing up it didn't even really matter, because they made up for it. For example, our cake was the wrong flavor, but since it was extremely delicious, who cares? My mother in law claims it was the best cake she's ever had. And they messed up the timing for the ceremony, so that I came three minutes after the bridesmaids were all out (they must have thought I was a runaway bride for a second there...) but the ceremony went beautifully when I did actually arrive, so all is well. When there was champagne in the bridal suite when we arrived, I explained the slip up to the bridal attendant and she rushed off with it, coming back with a big platter of fruit and cheese (which was definitely more the kind of thing I needed to quell my nervous tummy.) Those little details are the things I remember most from the day; my bridal attendant running around with my lip gloss, my maitre'd dropping to her knees to get to work on my crazy bustle. And the coordination of the day was excellent; everything ran smoothly. I can't rave enough about Swan Club. A thousand thumbs up, if that's possible.

Limo: Legend Limos
A+

I didn't really care that much about the limo thing; it wasn't on the top of my priority list. But I needed a timely service to fit me and my bridesmaids in to get to Swan Club from my hotel, so a limo seemed necessary. Legend Limos provided a very inexpensive pick up/drop off service, getting us to the wedding in a clean limo (that was right on time!), and picking us up from the wedding in a sleek getaway car. The drivers were really amiable, we were on time, and well, what else can you want from a limo company? If you're on a budget, try them out for pick up/drop off. They are one of the only services I found offering that, and they were excellent.

Ceremony Music: Vintage String Quartet
A++

Here comes the splurge. When I mentioned to my husband that we could just have the DJ do the ceremony (and it is really cheap, so if this doesn't matter to you, definitely consider that as well), he said, 'I want a string quartet.' And that was that. We decided to have it. Sure, it was far more expensive. But I think even the most budgeted of weddings should have one splurge item- one thing that is exactly what you want, even if it's a bit more expensive than the other options. For us, it was the quartet, and Vintage did an awesome job. They were so nice on the phone, and although I never met them in person before the big day (and come to think of it, never really met them there either) I trusted they would do great based on many positive reviews I had heard, and they did! I have hilarious footage of them creatively drawing out Canon in D for three minutes when the timing was all off and I was for some reason being held up with my confused bridal attendant while all the bridal party and guests waited for me. And one of the guests, afterwards, came up to me and said, 'String Quartet- nice touch!' I loved how it made the ceremony personal, it made it 'us.' So I'm extremely happy about our choice, and to any hopeless romantics who need a quartet like my husband and I, well, I definitely would recommend Vintage String Quartet.

Photographer: Twelfth Night, Viki
A+

Twelfth Night! So, one of the other budget issues for me was photography. I simply couldn't, especially after deciding on the string quartet splurge, afford a full photography package. I looked for recommended vendors on LIW, and then tried to find one that would offer me something different. Twelfth Night was the *only* one to have a by-the-hour option. We saved a fortune only having our photographer come for two hours, taking pictures of the ceremony, the formal portraits, the first dance, and the toasts. I had other family make sure to get other vital elements (getting ready/father-daughter/etc.), and we put digital cameras on all the tables (we ordered them online cheap!) And Viki with Twelfth Night? Amazing. Probably was the vendor I knew the least, since I met her on a day when I was extremely stressed out (you know that peak of wedding stress? I had that early on.) and my husband just wanted to have that vendor done with, so we just settled on her, the only photographer we met with. Come day of, she was just awesome- we actually didn't expect her to stay through the toasts, but she did, and did some really outstanding work. She knew that I preferred formal to photojournalism, and even though she is a photojournalist, she managed to take photographs that represented a nice balance of our tastes, and I just love them. We got our proofs on a CD for now, and maybe in the future we'll use their services again for an album (another nice budgeting move- spend a little now, a little later). So, anyway, yay Twelfth Night!

Florist: Verbena Floral Designs (separate review for floral decorations, which was DIY)
A+++

Jen at Verbena Floral Designs is my favorite vendor! Originally, I had a ridiculous seeming request that many florists immediately said they could not work around: I wanted only a bouquet for me, a boutonnière for my husband, and a few flowers for my hair. And I wanted all dark purple. No lilac. No red. No blue. Rejection after rejection, Jen said, Sure! And gave me an amazing, fair price (a couple places overpriced the flowers to make up for the shortage of them...) A few weeks before the wedding, I started fretting about the bridesmaids and groomsmen not having flowers, so I puzzled about it and decided maybe a simple, single bloom would be elegant and still inexpensive. One frantic email to Jen later, I added to my contract calla lily blooms and mini-calla boutonnières. Day of, I was presented with orchids for my hair on nifty little wires, very elegant callas for the bridal party, and a STUNNING bouquet, which even had, to my surprise, stephanotis in it! I had spoken with her about loving that flower but not being able to afford it. You know you've got a vendor who cares on your hand when she remembers that and decides to surprise you with it on your big day. I will never forget seeing my bouquet for the first time. It was everything I wanted, and I will always always always be grateful to Jenn at Verbena for making it all happen for me!

DJ: FM DJs
A+++
Oh my God! Frank at FM DJ's was a God send! We needed a really inexpensive, really good DJ, and all the LIW reviews pointed us to FM. Frank listened to us as we shared our loathing for YMCA and crowd participation, worked with us when we admitted to a weird taste in mostly folk and random Hawaiian style music (hubbie from Hawaii, and I'm just plain bohemian..) and assured us that he would make sure everything was to our taste and the crowd's taste as well. Day of, I heard all sorts of songs I didn't even mention to him playing at the cocktail hour (which is included in their least expensive package), Jack Johnson, Dave Matthews, stuff I actually listen to... my maitre'd came up to me excited about the songs she was hearing. As for getting non-dancing folk to dance in the middle of the afternoon, Frank actually accomplished this. He'd come up to us and be like, 'They weren't dancing, and I tried Michael Jackson, and now they are- but we didn't talk about that genre, and I just wanted to see if it's okay.' That care for keeping us happy with his selections was just awesome. And he even got me out on the dance floor, and I'm a shy little thing that really doesn't like to be on a dance floor. So, if that doesn't say something about FM, I don't know what does. Frank was amazing. I recommend him a thousand times over.

DIY SECTION!

Programs!

Amazon.com provided cheap pre-folded cardstock, which we then brought to my local copy shop, had a program I made up on my computer printed on them for under 20 dollars, punched holes in the corners, and tied little ribbons there (ribbon from M&J). We saved a fortune, and I thought they looked rather elegant! The basket they are in in the picture, by the way, we actually found by the trash area in my husband's apartment. Hilarious, I picked it up like the scavenger bride I was, and said, 'Huh... this will work for something...' We just wrapped a bunch of purple ribbon around it, but the lace and white details were already there. We have no idea how it got there, and to whoever disposed of a clean white basket, we thank you for your generous donation to our wedding :)

Card Box:
A white cake box we got for next to free and cut a hole in the top of :) think about it- is this really an item to spend a lot of money on? It was white, it was a box- yay!

Favors: Oriental Trading, M&M NYC Store
Oriental Trading's boxes weren't that great quality wise (lots of stringy glue on the ribbons tied around the boxes to pick off), but we made due with it, filling them with a bunch of purple and white M&Ms, for a finished product that was simple and inexpensive! Plus, the M&Ms were an important nod to my Dad, since he absolutely adores M&Ms, and has all those dispensing machines in the house. Without my even telling him I thought of him when I made those favors, he looked over at me during the reception, picked up a favor, and gave me a smile that told me he knew it was for him. That pretty much made the day for me to make my Dad smile like that :)
Here's the favors, next to a table camera (the notes came with the cameras):

Centerpieces!

Bowls from Saveoncrafts.com! We spent something like $60 on 10 large glass bowls, about $10 on purple stones to put at the bottom of the bowls, and another $20 or so for floating candles and votives. Total cost for all of the centerpieces was less than the usual cost of a single flower centerpiece, and, while Swan Club for some reason didn't fill the water up very high (maybe they didn't realize they were floating candles...) the finished product still worked out great!

Decor for Ceremony and Reception: Long Island Wedding Flowers, Petal Garden, Walmart?

So, for decor, we got down to budget-business. We scrapped actual fresh flowers for the whole thing. Yes, indeed. But I personally think everything looked beautiful anyway! We used silk petals for the aisles of the ceremony room, which was great, since you can't get fresh petals in dark royal purple anyway! It saved so much money, and a few guests came up to me after and said they thought they were on some sort of wedding show when the ushers started scattering petals on the aisle. I loved the result. Besides, the Swan Club provides you with such an already gorgeous location, it needs very little else, in my opinion (the white decor on the ceiling and plants are always there). For the reception, we used candle centerpieces, scattered with dried petals, which look and actually feel soft to the touch, but are far cheaper than fresh! Petal Garden (http://www.petalgarden.com/) sends your petals a couple weeks before the day, so they won't get stale and over-dry. Plus, dried petals take on a much darker purple, so again, a color that would have been much harder to get with fresh flowers!

And Walmart? Well, I stumbled upon a few silk flowers in there one day, not even really looking for wedding flowers. I showed them to my husband and he said, 'Why don't we just use those and some ribbon for the cake?' Ta-da: cake decorating costs: about 10 dollars.

Guestbook Alternative!

Frame and jar from the dollar store, ribbon from M&J in NYC! Total costs: about $5 People said the guestbook alternative was really fun, far more people wrote us a message than did in a traditional guestbook at our second reception (as I hear this is commonly the case with traditional guestbooks), and we'll actually do something with it! The guestbook from our second reception is sitting in a box somewhere, but the notes people wrote us will probably become part of a wedding scrapbook, full of fun messages and cute drawings! Another one of those elements I thought really made our wedding feel like OUR wedding.

Table Cards
Swan Club provided table cards. They looked fine to me, so I used them:

Menus!

The copy shop, near my college, the same place that made all my course packs, printed me a simple, elegant menu design, 100 menus under 10 bucks. I can't imagine Kinkos is that much more. It just takes a little time in front of the computer designing it, but its worth it! I am so glad I went DIY for this. Places I looked at that make weddings for you cost a fortune in comparison.

Honeymoon
The Marriott Resort- Kauai!

The happy ending! We went to Kauai, the Hawaiian island my Hawaiian sweetheart is least familiar with, and had a beautiful, romantic week. The resort was under construction which wasn't ideal, but they were good to us all and all, and the island was perfect for what we were looking for; a beautiful, remote break between weddings. Because, sure enough, a week later we flew over to the Big Island of Hawaii and did it all again!
BUDGET HINT!! We used Traveler's Joy, a registry for honeymoons, and this paid for a huge portion of the honeymoon expenses! We found many of our guests loved this option instead of money or gifts, because they knew they were providing us with really fun memories! Make sure to send your loved ones pictures of the wonderful things you did on the honeymoon with their gifts! Our guests bought us toasters and gave us checks, but they also gave us massages, helicopter rides, and romantic dinners :)

Then, the second wedding reception!

Here's a few things I did for that reception:
*Bought a cheap dress from a discount store. No regrets. I wanted a different, more casual look, but still wanted to wear a white dress. This did the job!
*Wore the same shoes. Just to keep one of the elements the same! I looked silly in ballet flats, but the event was so casual, it didn't really matter.
*Had friends do all the photography and videography. Okay, they didn't do that great a job on the formal shots, but whatever. We still got a big slew of pictures to help us remember the day.

*Got my hair done at Super Cuts! It was the only place open on the remote side of the island on a Sunday! But they did a good job!

*Had family provide all the food and flowers! Not a bad choice when family is composed of excellent cooks, and one of them owns an orchid nursery :)

Here's some of the elements that defined the day:
Flower In My Hair: bargain store. It was actually from the gardening department (ssshh...) but if you don't touch it, you don't know! The florist was closed on Sunday, which is the actual reason why we went this route.
Favors: bulk cherry blossom design chopsticks, which I wrapped with ribbon and a note. That took forever, but, 200 pairs of chopsticks later, I still saved money. :)
Earrings: Street Fair! Hey, $2! If you're not convinced that I'm a bargain bride yet, that should do it :)
Oh, I'll stop. Needless to say, it was a beautiful day, and we spent very little on it, proving twice over that you don't need to spend a fortune to have a beautiful wedding day!

Thank you for reading my review! Now go save money on your wedding!

As you know from my annoying FM's , I've been waiting for your review!!!
Absolutely stunning and beautiful. I love all of your ideas to keep things classy on a budget - we're in the same boat. And whaddyaknow, we're also going to book Twelfth Night!
I think this is the one post on LIW that the FH is going to be excited to read. I'm definitely showing it to him. Love how accomodating Swan Club was regarding your ceremony and beliefs - that, coupled with their ability (and excitement!) about a veggie wedding, is what steered us to book there as well. (We're two different religions and will be having a ceremony there, and then a small ceremony by an imam during the reception).
Love it, love it, love it. Thank you so much for posting it!
Congrats to you and your hubby. This one is filled with sparkling cider for you guys:
