OK ladies whos buying a home now?

I am and i have to say its one of the most difficult things i have ever had to do. I feel like we find one and get overbid immediatly.. its so overwhelming. I just placed another bid on another house in franklin square, this house is very nice and the property is GREAT... its a tudor style and it has a slate roof.. all brick house...but the inside needs to be renovated so we are offereing them 50K less then there over the top asking. (the kitchen needs renovating and so does the bath, the upstairs is just rafters, but it has potential and i love it) I just got off the phone with the realtor and i didnt get a good feeling about my bid. so im sure we will keep looking... How discouraging.. but i am trying to look on the bright side, whatever that may be!!

anyone else going through this?

Re: OK ladies whos buying a home now?

Oh I feel your pain. DH and I spent every weekend for almost three months looking at houses, condos etc...
I have seen over 40 houses and was totally disappointed. So we are going with a condo now. We are 'in contract' finally, after being overbid by others and losing several condos in the process! It is so frustrating, and now the rates are going up. Just stay positive, when it is supposed to work out for you it will. That is what I kept telling myself!

We are looking to upgrade from a townhouse to a single family house in Suffolk. We've been looking for about 3 months now and are ready to give up. It's so frustrating

Re: OK ladies whos buying a home now?

We've actually been in contract for a co-op for more than a year with our seller. He is really giving us a hard time. The only reason we stayed in this deal for so long is that the price is very cheap. Hopefully soon, we will close on this deal. I want to get settled.

Its so frustrating. I know that if this house is the one then there are so many others, I just would like to get that closure already..

Re: OK ladies whos buying a home now?

yay! another new board

We've been actively looking for houses for a while now - it does get very frustrating. At least we're in no immediate rush to buy - we're researching and shopping for now, so hopefully when the time comes, we'll be ready!

What areas are you looking in? What's your criteria? I LOVE tudors! DH doesn't though

Re: OK ladies whos buying a home now?

Thanks girls!!

Teri i am looking in Franklin Square, and also Bellmore... My criteria is that the house have 2 floors and a basement and i NEED a garage (frank has like 5 bikes) and i want a decent size yard... I would like the kitchen to be in the back of the house ( incase i ever want to expand) I like capes, tudors. I dont like morton ranches although i have seen some, and i dont care for colonials.

I dont mind having to do some of the work myself.

What are you looking for?

Re: OK ladies whos buying a home now?

I put in a bid on a house in massapequa Park once. It was a great house on a nice quiet street with lots of young kids around. The real estate lady called back and talked us into upping our bid to over asking price based on some info she 'overheard'. We did and wowee kazowee we got the house. Then I found out thru a friend who knew the listing agent that we were the highest bidder before we changed our bid and the owner loved us. Matt got sooo mad that we walked away. I was crushed. Then one day, surfing the net, I found my house. It was everything we wanted and here we are. Things truly do happen for a reason..........keep the faith ladies!

Re: OK ladies whos buying a home now?

Suzanne,

We just closed on our house last week and let me tell you the past 8 months were crazy for us - YES, 8 months, we found this house in January and just now closed!!! We were going cookoo!!! Here's my pep talk for you: bids not working out, just mean there is something out there better for you!!

I'm sure you will find something! Keep your chin up!

Good luck!

Re: OK ladies whos buying a home now?

I have a question about bidding on a house: if you make a bid, and then someone else bids higher, do you get the chance to then up your bid if you want to? Or are the bids locked in somehow?

Re: OK ladies whos buying a home now?

Yes, they can accept your bid, and then you sign a paper saying that the bid has been accepted for X amount of dollars.. or they can give it to someone else, it can also turn into a bidding war.. that happened to me with the last house.. i placed a bid, someone bid higher i bid 3K higher then them then they bid then i bid, finallly the homeowners accepted the other peoples bid..

Re: OK ladies whos buying a home now?

That's awful. It must be so stressful!

For those who are looking to buy: how long did it take for you to save for a dp?

Re: OK ladies whos buying a home now?

Suzanne - I love colonials! I'd prefer that to a cape any day, but that's not happening on LI with these prices! Oh, and it's amazing how many houses don't have garages and basements I grew up with both and thought that was normal! But where we're looking on the south shore, many houses are on slabs since they'd hit water if they dug any deeper We'll see though - some do and some don't.

clueless - It didn't take us TOO long to save the dp, but we're not the norm. DH's salary is partly commissioned based, so it was easier for us to save more $$ throughout the year. We're more worried about carrying the mortgage from month-to-month. With all these layoffs, etc it's so stressful!

Re: OK ladies whos buying a home now?

Suzanne I am right there with you. We are in the process of looking for a house also and it is very frustrating. We've been looking for a little over a month now and we're finally starting to see some things we like, but still not the ideal house for us. Just hang in there and I'm sure you'll find the right house for you.
