Honest Opinions on reception halls
Hello Again,This weekend I have had a bit of an overload of reception halls.
What we are looking for is a homey intimate feeling but also something that is classy.
We saw fox hollow-- which we really liked, but the room that we would be getting the band or dj would set up not near the dance floor. Does that make a difference? I've never seen that before.
We also saw the Riviera at Massapequa. I am afraid the room might be too small and didn't offer the white glove service like the others (but its possible they forgot to mention and I forgot to ask)-- also it seems very 50/50 on the reviews on the boards which makes me very nervous. We are looking around 150 people... and food and service is important to us.
We are going to the Thatched cottage and three village in this week. Any opinions on these places??
I am really looking for the good and the bad.
My biggest concerns are when guests have to wait on long lines to get food at the cocktail hour and drinks throughout the whole night.
Sorry this is so long! I am just in over load right now!!
Thanks again!!
**Edited to ask for other reccomendations on reception halls**

Re: Honest Opinions on reception halls
Hi, I have also been on RH overload the past few weeks. Finally, my FH and I have limited down to the top 2... 1 being the Thatched Cottage.
I think it is kinda homey, since it isn't a large place...but also very classy. They give you SO much food for the CH and Reception...and both rooms are very pretty and have nice views of the water :)
Only thing is it is a little more money than both the Riviera and Fox Hollow. We looked at both, and in my opinion, I think the Riviera would be a little tight for 150 people but I'm sure people do it.
Goodluck :)

Re: Honest Opinions on reception halls
We seriously considered Fox Hollow, but the room they offered us was....not what we wanted. However, it is a very nice RH - the food and the service are great (we were there for a wedding about 5 years ago).I HIGHLY recommend looking into Woodbury Country Club. I got married there last Novemer, and they were amazing. The service is impeccable, the grounds are gorgeous, and the food is beyond plentiful and delicious. Feel free to fm me if you have any questions. We also had about 150 people at our wedding if that helps - and our room was gorgeous, and the setup was perfect.

Re: Honest Opinions on reception halls
I also looked at the Riviera and thought the same things you did.I was basically looking for something that was intimate, had outstanding service and food and only catered to 1 wedding at a time.
So I booked appointments with the Thatched Cottage and Three Village Inn.
We went to see Thatched Cottage first. I absolutely fell in love with it! The rooms were beautiful and the food and the way they serve it is just amazing! It is French service meaning that all of the food is plated in front of the guests and every table is served at the same time. This impressed me because I've been to too many weddings where one table was finishing their main course and another table didn't even get their salads yet!
FH and I walked out, went to the car and immediately turned right around and booked it.
We never even went to see the Three Village Inn! I hear fantastic things about TVI though.
feel free to FM me if you have any questions.

Re: Honest Opinions on reception halls
Thank you everyone! We looked the WCC and thought the place was really nice and my parents have been to a wedding their and said the service and food was outstanding. My only issue is that we are planning a late fall/early winter wedding and I just felt we wouldn't get to utilize their beautiful grounds. We also went to Jericho terrace-- and at first i was in love. But, the guarantee requested was higher then what we expected, which made us feel the place was too big for what we are looking for and not as homey.
Fox hollow is what we are looking for as far as the homey feel. The room we would get is the smaller room and the cocktail hour is the winter pavillian room. The dance floor is a nice size-- but the area where the band or dj sets up is off to the side not near the dance floor. I don't know if that should be a concern or not.

Gotcha! I believe you are talking about the Briar Fox room (you go down a couple of steps, right?) at the FH. That is the room they offered us as well (with CH in the WGP), and we personally hated it. When we were there for the third time we saw the BF room set up for a wedding, and it was SO dark, we also didn't like the placement of the dj, and quite honestly it was kinda depressing and basementy.
ETA - Just one more thing about WCC - we also got married in November and we got to use the grounds a bit - just wear a shawl!

Re: Honest Opinions on reception halls
We haven't rulled out WCC-- my parents still rave about the wedding they went to two years ago. I just wish we could have the cocktail hour outside under the tents. The set up looked really great. Which room did you end up choosing? The one upstairs or the ground floor?

Have you tried Westbury Manor. I also wanted something homey and not 'wedding hall'. It has beautiful gardens and fireplaces. I love it.

i think the room at fox hollow is the room im in and i asked the same thing cause where the dj i thought it would be in peoples ears but my dj told me that the speakers are set up on either side of the door u enter in so its right by dance floor and that made me feel better..hth

I'm sorry, I really didn't mean to be pushy - we were just so thrilled with them. You can definitely have an outdoor CH in November - they provide heated tents. My inlaws went to a wedding at WCC 2 years ago in December and they said the heated tents were fabulous. We actually saw them set up in 2006 and they are nice - and your guests will definitely not be cold!
We had the room upstairs - we loved that it overlooked the garden. Honestly though, both rooms are beautiful, you really can't go wrong!

Re: Honest Opinions on reception halls
Do you remember the name of the reception room? Was it the Briarfox? If you love the fox hollow and love that room- then go for it. The service is fantastic. My honest opinion, I probably wouldn't choose the fox hollow if they offered me that room because it just doesn't do it for me. My Reception is in the WGP, cocktail hour is in both the briarfox and adjacent room (skylight terrace?).
As per your actual question...it doesn't matter if the DJ/band are away from the dance floor, the speaker set up will be fine, I'm sure.

I can recommend Milleridge Cottage House for that homey feel, too. And as someone else already stated, Westbury Manor.

when you call a RH room 'depressing and basementy' maybe you should consider the fact that there are people on these boards that are getting married in that 'depressing and basementy' room.
everyone is entitled to their own opinion but i would NEVER say that about a reception hall knowing that people on here might be getting married there.

Actually, if you read my response, I said 'WE PERSONALLY' - meaning that is my own opinion. If you also look at my earlier posts on this thread, you will see that I REALLY liked the FH. My husband and I personally didn't like the Briar Fox room - the OP was asking for HONEST opinions - and that is all it is, my honest opinion. Believe me, EVERY rh on this site has negative and positive things said about it alllll the time. I have heard a bunch of negative things about my own hall, and do I get upset, NO - because everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

I loved the Thatched Cottage. Its so beautiful and the service was great. I was told by many people that it was the best cocktail hour they'd ever been to.
