cultutal differences

yesterday I told DH that my aunt's MIL just passed away and I mentioned the name of my aunt's husband. for freaking 5 hrs DH had no clue who I was talking about (a person he met million times). finally we arrive at the fact that I pronounced the name the Russian way and DH only understands the name with American accent.
so its either my DH is a total dim wit or its an actual thing not to understand things unless they are pronounced with American accent (same word btw)

so this made me chuckle that I keep forgetting that DH and I come from 2 totally different worlds. not only culture wise: I am Russian Israeli while DH is French Tunisian and Israeli, but also from completely different socio economical backgrounds which creates A LOT of arguments between us
life is hard basically is what I am saying

any of u have same issues?

Re: cultutal differences

you're on your own on this one ...

DH, for the most part, got used to me speaking 'correctly' (using Hebrew accent when needed).

i do laugh at him when he tries to mimic the accent though ... he sounds so awful (rolling his R's like when speaking spanish, rather than Hebrew) ... poor DH

Re: cultutal differences

My father is 2nd Gen Sicilian and my mom is like 4 Gen Eastern European.
I'm as American as they come pretty much and I married a 1st Gen Greek and work with his family.

It's safe to assume we have our cultural issues.

Re: cultutal differences

Uhhh did you see my Pasta Fazool post? I think Americans are arrogant enough that everything should be said our way.

ETA: I have to say, I am guilty of not understanding MIL's brogue sometimes. It's very heavy but also very amusing. Especially when she says 'feck' or 'arse'.

Re: cultutal differences

Socio-economically, DH and I come from similar backgrounds.

Culturally, I grew up in an American-Italian household with every Sunday being pasta night, and big huge holiday dinners. DH is what you would call a WASP.....He could live off of steak, burgers and cold cuts, lol. We've learned to make it work though

Re: cultutal differences

DH is the son of a presbyterian minister from the midwest and I am a Jew from NY

Yeah, there's definitely cultural differences...not to mention the fact that DH grew up sheltered from American culture as well...half the time when I reference TV shows/movies/celebrities he has no idea who or what I'm talking about.

haha its true!! we both have grandparents who are survivors, we both go to shul and keep the same degree of kosher. our biggest differences are the way we pronounce words and the fact that I grew up in a big city and he's from the suburbs. it makes for more differences than one would think!

Re: cultutal differences

Considering that I'm more of a Unitarian Universalist that leans toward Christianity, born and raised in Queens to an Irish-Catholic family, and he's a somewhat-practicing Muslim born in Bangladesh and immigrated here at the age of 8...yeah, we definitely have a good chunk of cultural differences. More that have to do with family differences than things he and I don't see eye-to-eye on...but that comes up too.

Re: cultutal differences

I'm Italian and Dh is Puerto Rican. We don't really have too many differences between him and I. But our families are like night and day! Especially when it comes to his old world style mom. She thinks I should be a 'Good Puerto Rican wife' like her and cook, clean, iron, make babies, and slave over Dh every day for the rest of my life. She complains to him about my non-cooking self every time she visits us. She is a total c.unt. for serious.

ETA...plus...he thinks we're gonna let out kids sleep in our bed til they're like 3 because that what his PR relatives do. Sure they can sleep in my bed...after I move out.

Re: cultutal differences

I'm German, Italian, Irish, French, Native American, and Dutch with a huge Italian Catholic family on my Mom's side and a very small Christian Science family on my Dad's side.

DH is German, Italian, English, Russian, and Polish with a small Methodist family on his Dad's side and a huge Jewish family on his Mom's side.

We're both religious and cultural mutts as far as backgrounds go...however, I was raised Catholic...he became Catholic...and we both identify with the Italian and German traditions most. So although we were culturally lost, we are both creating this Catholic, Italian, German heritage for ourselves.

Re: cultutal differences

yea... we have similar differences. DH is very italian american and I am a nice little jewish girl from LI... we bicker. sometimes we have huge arguments over important topics (religion of baby is one of them)

Typical conversation...

me: I cant wait for our kids to go to camp, I loved camp and I love my camp friends

DH: out kids are NOT going to camp!

(drama drama drama)

Its a good thing opposites attract.
