I'm all for diversity!i'm peruvian and DH is Polish. My cousins have married Italians, cubans, blacks. Dh's cousins have married mostly Polish, except for the one rebel cousin that married an egyptian guy (i'm being sarcastic here...)
IMO, his famly is losing out...yes, they have the 'advantage' of sharing a culture and not having to struggle with learning the language, customs, etc....BUT in this day and age ESPECIALLY living in the USA, people everywhere have to ACCEPT diversity and immigration...
And Janis, i love your friend's idea... being a mutt is a wonderful thing

oh, and the best lesson would be for your children to fall in love and marry someone outside of your 'circle'
My parents encouraged me to do this.
this is awesome!![]()
![]()

a friend from college had a theory that we should all marry outside of our race, so that the future generation would not encounter racism, since everyone would be mixed. it's a cool theory!!
Neel thinks this way too! Every once in awhile he'll bring it up.
My parents didn't care who I was with...what their race, religion, or gender was...so long as I was happy.![]()
yes! Anthony always claims that the only reason he married me was to dilute the white race- its a JOKE, OK PEEPS?

speaking as a mutt, i think the key is to celebrate all cultures. i grew up very american-ized. which isnt a bad thing at all....but i feel like i may have missed out a bit celebrating my heritage(s).

Re: ignorant people
I recently read an amazing article (wish I remember where....blog/magazine/newspaper etc damn) by a foodie who documented all of the different types of food he was able to sample in queens in a 24 hour period. NOT from restaurants but from people cooking and BBQ'ing in parks. The ethnic diversity was absolutely amazing! I was blown away! I felt so very proud to be a new yorker while reading the article because where else on earth would this or could this happen?!
PS - I happen to think food is an amazing way to experience and enjoy different cultures. It is one of the best ways to immerse yourself and learn if you don't have an unlimited travel budget!

While I agree diversity is a good thing and I am all for it, I can see the view of your friends. When looking for a neighborhood for my husband and I to live in, we looked at places with little diversity. We want to live in an area with people who are just like us and with little crime rate. My DH and I have both lived in communities that have had an influx of change and it really can cause a dramatic change in a neighborhood. I really don't think that your friends are 'prejudice or racist' but they have strong opinions about the area they live in and everyone is entitled to that.
Diversity does not equal crime. In my opinion, that kind of thinking is considered prejudice.
I in no way was implying that diversity equals prejudice. And also that little diversity leads to crime. My educational background is studying crime and crime patterns and know that is not always the case (although it is unfortunately one of the factors). I think everyone in their own way knows places they would or would not live based on the area and the people that live there. People on this board are quick to rebut an opinion of someone that they disagree with and that is not allowing for people to express who they are and their beliefs. I am disappointed in that

i agree. while i value discourse and discussion and respect everyone's right to their own opinion, there are some things that do tend to rub many people the wrong way and while that may or may not have been the intent, i also read the post in a way that seemed to relate diversity and the 'other' to crime and unsafe living conditions. to put out there that you want to live only near those who are like you came off, to me at least, as quite a bit off-putting and even discriminatory or prejudicial.

Re: ignorant people
Let me tell you about what happens when people peace out because new groups move in.Detroit used to be a major contender as a happening city -- with great culture and lots of families and a booming economy, etc. etc. etc.
And then people started leaving.
And now there's no one left.
This was the talk of half my facebook feed today.
Census 2010: Detroit's population lowest its been since 1910.
It is what it is. There's a reason this is called 'white flight'...
It isn't right... but it's what has happened.
There's nothing left. Nevermind the people... there's no gas stations. There's no grocery stores. No banks. No nothing.
There's broken down building that people squat in and set on fire. All the stores are liquor stores and EVERY building has bars on the windows (because almost all the windows are busted.)
EVERY building has graffiti.
EVERY EVERY EVERY building.
The Tigers ball park is there. The Lions stadium. These two things and some casinos and restaurants and concert halls all take residence within a 5 block radius in Detroit.
That's all there is.
If people had stuck around and just played nicely -- even with the riots -- they could've banded together to clean the city up.
And now the only people who want to do that are the young people who see how stupid people being close minded is and how devastating the effects are.
... but they have no money to do anything about it because no one can get jobs in Michigan.
Just saying.

I didnt say that diversity equals prejudice. I said that kind of thinking I consider prejudice. If you've studied crime and crime patterns, you definitely know that there are always more to the data.
I think I know what you might be *trying* to say, but maybe its not coming out right. I work in in a low income area of Brooklyn which had its own instance of white flight after the blackout in 1977. Its gone from smoldering lots to its current growth of affordable housing and gentrification. Its still in a challenging position but growth, nontheless.
That said, I would never want to live there.
Because its got people who are not my color? No
Because there's diversity in the 'wrong way'? No
Because there's too many poor people? No
Its because its still a poor neighborhood that has failing infrastructure- horrible schools, which directly leads to job stagnation, lack of decent housing, all the way to poor garbage collection. It runs the gamut. THAT, in my opinion, is a reason not to live in a neighborhood. Not because of the color of my neighbors' skin. And for this exact reason, I remain working in that neighborhood to help improve it. I think you are free to express your beliefs here on LIW and in any forum. But no matter where you say it, be prepared to defend your position, especially if its controversial. You knew it would be controversial, right?

I can't even....because I love MOST of the girls on this site and what I started typing out would've got me kicked off forever.
you can say it in a respectful manner. i think she needs to hear it.
True, but it's not worth my effort. People that are IGNORANT are always set in their ways. You can't change them, so why try?
And furthermore, it's incredibly fitting that the one thread this one responded to today was titled 'ignorant people'. Good job.
Have fun In your white neighborhood. White people never commit crimes!
So true Kris.
Janis, ignorant people frustrate me so much. I LOVE diversity and its something I miss about living in Queens. I am seeking a school for our children that is diverse, and it makes me sad that people look down on this school district because of the diversity. A lot of people seem to think diversity and crime/problems go hand in and hand. Its sad.
But let them leave Queens. We don't need them!

When I said people just like us ...I didn't mean just white people. I lived in that and its not what I want. I meant people along the same line as us (economic, educational and similar lifestyle). Yes we moved into a predominately 'white' area but we bought based on schools and crime rate and overall community.
I just find it funny that people are so quick to say things about others when somewhere in there minds when confronted with a situation (such as buying a home), diversity, ethnicity and religious background of the community will play a part. People here were reading into my post as something negative/controversial when I was simply saying I could see where the friends were coming from.

'like' button pressed as well! diversity rocks! I live on a street that is Indian/Puerto Rican/Dominican and 2 avenues over it's chinese, and 2 avenues past that it's orthodox jew. this is what makes the world go round.
Also GO canada!!!!!! Canadians rock! lived there for 4 years and they are some of the most culturally accepting people!!!

I just have to say... incase anyone is wondering why I choose not to address the OP (i like to think i'm really important, obvs).... being i feel the need to comment on a lot of things lately...many of you are aware that i live in one of the whitest, christian-est, communities on long island.
i feel like any response I can give to this indicating my feelings on the importance of diversity would be met with a 'what a hypocrite
' ... at least behind the scenes.
