Spinoff to Dog Lovers
My 2yr old loves puppies. So I'm really thinking about getting her one.Hence, I know nothing about dogs.
What kind of puppy should I get? I want a small one, one that doesn't grow too much, child friendly, doesn't shed too much, and easy to manage.
Also how expense are they?

Re: Spinoff to Dog Lovers
i might be biased, but i highly recommend cockapoos.todd is 3 years old and about 25 - 30 pounds (he's a little on the bigger side, lol). he's very affectionate, playful, always wants to snuggle and he has such a personality. everyone always says he's a character. he also doesn't shed at all.
as for expenses, i mean, vet bills def add up, especially if they ever get sick. todd also has allergies, so we have to buy really expensive food.
i think they're totally worth it though; i can't imagine not having him <3

Re: Spinoff to Dog Lovers
Why not look into the Maltese rescue. They can be temperamental, but with training they are great with kids and they are small with hair not fur, so no shedding! You do have to have them groomed but not too often!maltese rescue

Re: Spinoff to Dog Lovers
any of the smaller breed dogs, like yorkies - but they are very territorial. so are pom's. they like kids but can be jealous of attention paid to others - just depends on the dog. but they are so fun and loveable and have hair, not fur so no shedding.HOWEVER - ANY dog you get will require a lot of work and time and money. If they get sick or need any special in regards to diet the cost will add up. It will be like taking care of a 2 year for the next 15 years. So be really sure you want to take on that extra responsibility, because your 2 years may love dogs now but she won't be taking care of it.

Re: Spinoff to Dog Lovers
i think a cavalier king charles would be good for you. they're great with children. the only problem is they're hair and you would have to maintain them but they are one of the sweetest dogs out there.of course w/ every pet comes walking/exercising/playing with them. there's also the vet expenses and breed specific problems. also grooming expenses
perhaps look into rescue dogs?

I have a cockapoo too! and he is soooo good with our three year old niece. Their size can vary (depending what size poodle they were mixed with toy, miniature, even standard). Goober is about 18 lbs. He doesn't shed much at all.
Dogs are expensive. Especially the first year when you are paying for all the dog supplies, shots, vet visits, spay/neutering (like $600). Also, if you have a dog that doesn't shed like poodle mix, maltese, yorkie, havanese etc, the downside is grooming costs. taking my pomeranian and cockapoo to be groomed is almost $100.
Our pom loves kids too but he's also hardier than most poms that are tiny and can get hurt. He is also more likely to walk away from my niece while Goober is always wanting to play with her.

Re: Spinoff to Dog Lovers
I wanted to add that I think the cost is totally worth it! I think kids learn so much growing up with a doggie playmate. about being kind to animals, responsibility, not to mention how adorable kids and dogs are together!other breeds to consider are havanese & coton de tulear. Both a bit of a sturdier little dog that are good with kids. DH and I almost got one before we got Goober

Re: Spinoff to Dog Lovers
My parents have a cockapoo and he is the sweetest thing ever! If you think yours is on the bigger side just wait...Scruffy was supposedly the 'runt' of the liter...he's now coming in at close to 40lbs. HOWEVER, he is my mom's baby and you can honestly do anything to him and he just sits there. He lets me dress him up and put socks on him and he just looks at me with those big brown eyes. In all fairness, no one has really told him he's a dog and so he thinks he's my mom's baby...he loves to be cuddled, hugged and kissed. Here's 2 pics from my wedding:

omg, scruffy
todd thinks he's a person too -- i dress him up all of the time, always pick him up, wake him up, cuddle him -- he doesn't care as long as he's getting attention

We totally hijacked the thread but Goober is exactly the same way. I have never known another dog that is sooo mushy and good natured about everything. Pretty cool that your cockapoos are the same way even though it's not a breed.
