Wording for invitation envelope-help!

I've mentioned that DH & I are throwing a surprise party for my Dad's 60th birthday party. I'm sending out the invitations at the middle/end of April; however, I'll have them in my possession today. I'll probably start addressing them and stuff soon though, since I'll be writing final papers at the end of April.

One of my Dad's friends just lost his wife about two weeks ago.

Do I put 'and Guest' on this friend's invitation? Is it too soon? Or would it be rude to invite him with no one? My Mom suggested that I write a personal note in the invitation and say 'If you'd like to bring a friend or one of your children, please feel welcome to.' What do you think of that idea? Do I say 'I'm so sorry about your wife...' and then go on to invite him with someone else?

He 'kinda' knows other people coming to the party...like there's a group that hangs out together at the racetrack every week...so there would be people from there going...but it's not like they go out and socialize otherwise...

Sorry so long...I just want to make sure that I'm considerate to this man's feelings.

I wouldn't write 'and guest'... but yes.. i'd write a personal note and tell him he's more than welcome to bring someone with him if he chooses.

Oh, and I'd wait for the 'sorry about your wife' until you see him...
