Re: Are you taking his name...or hyphenating?

I am going to legally hyphenate my name- but I will continue to use my maiden name at work, or wherever I feel appropriate. I will use his last name socially, etc. I figure hyphenating allows me to use either last name as I see fit- and either one is part of my legal name.

I am doing the same exact as this.

No hyphenating for me, too long. It was either keep my name or change but it was important to me to change my name although it will take some getting used to.

I agree totally. Funny story - my dad, shortly after he married stepmom and before I met FH, asked me one night at dinner if I would change my name if I got married one day. I said it was important to me to change it, but it was my choice. My dad said he thought all women should change their name (dad is WAY old-school), and my stepmom argued all women should keep their names, until I pointed out that she had just taken my dad's name. (Stepmom can be argumentative for no reason. ) Then, same dinner, ten minutes later, dad asked if I would ever consider being a judge (I was in law school at the time.) I said sure, and then I pointed out to dad that if I changed my name, I would be 'Judge FH's Last Name.' My dad then began to campaign for keeping my last name. My dad is weird.

Anyway, I think whatever you feel comfortable with, you should do! I think we've at least progressed so far that it's now the woman's choice - IMO.

I will be Deb Mylastname (no hyphen) His last name. You can write whatever you want on marriage license and I prefer not to hyphenate for concern about trouble with ie travel. I do not want to be alphabetized under the first initial but rather his so we are together (hope that makes sense) --anyway, This wasy I will have my name on all documents for ease of use (I am keeping it professionally) but have his last name for things like health insurance and travel. I feel, after some thought, like this is the best of both worlds.

My friend did this when she got married last August, sort of akin to the 'Hillary Rodham Clinton' format. However, she recently moved to the mid-west, and NO ONE referred to her by this name. Everyone called her Mrs. FH's full name (first & last). Even her own first name - gone! So, she officially hyphenated a month ago. I hope things are different in NY - and people call you what you ask them to.

My friend almost did. I love my friend. I don't like the idea of losing my entire name, either.

Here's a tip - make your name choice VERY clear to your DJ/Band. Another friend of mine kept her name, and the DJ announced them as Mr. and Mrs. Hislastname. Her family looked at the DJ like - 'Huh?' Good idea to plan ahead!! My friend who moved to the mid-west was announced as herfirstname & hisfirstname hislastname. She saved her maiden name for the thank-yous.

Not that i need everyone to have my address or know when i'll be bakc form my honeymoon, I just want to make it clear in the invite that I am keeping my entire name.

Re: Are you taking his name...or hyphenating?

This is what I am planning on doing (as of now, at least)... even though my full name (minus middle name!) will now be 26 letters long!!! Add in my middle name, and it will be 32 letters long!

Re: Are you taking his name...or hyphenating?

I am taking his for personal use. It sounds pretty, and he looked like he was going to cry when I told him I was thinking of naot taking it.

Professionally, I will keep using my maiden name. I love it too much to let it go entirely....

Re: Are you taking his name...or hyphenating?

I asked FH again last night and he seems to not be attached to it due to his family situation so he actually said, 'You can do whatever you want,' especially b/c of my acting...

How does one take his name but keep the maiden name professionally?

The trend among a lot of my married girlfriends seems to be hyphenating, you know like 'Jill Evans-Garrett.' I'm going to take my FH's name without hyphenating.

I'm curious -- what about you guys? And why are you choosing to hypenate...or not?

Neither, I'm keeping my name and taking on an alias. Fi and I discussed it a while ago and my professional name is all over all of my degrees and admission materials. I'd have to contact each court to make a motion to practice under a new name. And all that is in addition to changing SS card and passport plus credit cards and such. A friend at work just went through all of this and it was a huge hassle....and she hypenated.

Re: Are you taking his name...or hyphenating?

I'm one of 5 girls in my family, but as much as I hate giving up my name, I am going to take his name. I'm so old fashioned when it comes to stuff like that, I couldn't do it any other way.

Re: Are you taking his name...or hyphenating?

My plan is either 1) take his last name and make MY last name my middle name (I don't think my family would care since 'Ann' isn't really a middle name so much as a place filler for parents who wanted to give their kid a middle name but couldn't think of anything creative (no offense to the other middle name Anns out there) OR 2) hyphenate.

I am taking his name. I LOVE my last name and I am not crazy about his but its tradition and it means alot to him.

ditto, everyone calls me by my last name, and i love it, but i feel its something i give to him, and he really values the fact i'll share his name.
