Part 2 of my answer to your question:

Greek moms can be very difficult at times, especially if the spouses of their beloved kids are not Greek. My 2 cousins married non-Greeks, but both guys are really great and respect my autn and the Greek culture...but my aunt was very against both for a long time. She's mellowed out over time, though

One of the best things you can do to ingratiate yourself with your FMIL is to ask her to show how to bake traditional holiday desserts and/or how to cook traditional dishes. I don't know about your FMIL, but most Greek moms LOVE to show off their cooking abilities, and I'm sure she'll appreciate the effort you're making to learn Greek traditions.

PS - If it's any consolation, Greek moms excel at guilt trips and passive aggressiveness, so your FMIL is totally normal.

We got ours from Gifts on 5th in Brooklyn...we got two tall ones that will go on stands, and two smaller, matching candles to hold...The ones on stands we will later take them to the reception and place them by our table for decoration. We didn't get pillar ones though...do we need those as well?

I'm not sure some people's pictures that I saw they had the 2 really tall ones by the table and then 2 pillar candles on the table so i thought i would need them...not sure though!

The lady at the store told us what we would need but didn't mention anything about pillar candles...I would think it's optional..

congrats to you too... we havnt decided yet, because the fh grew up going to agia markella & I honestly do not like the old calendar churches.. I also feel agia markella looks down upon some people. I am thinking possibly St. Nicholas in Bayside

Hey Penny!!! Congrats!! where are you booking? We are getting married at Church of the Holy Resurrection in Brookville. We picked it b/c it was the nearest church to the hall but now it's going to be our church once we move anyway it worked out.

I grew up in AStoria so I am VERY familiar with Agia Markella and god forgive me, but I don't like that church. They kicked me out once for wearing a SKIRT to churuch (it wasn't a mini or anything!!) And they did it in such a rude way that I vowed that I'd never go back there again!

St Nick's is nice!!! Do you know how much they are asking to become members?

If you are looking into AStoria though, St. Catherine's is really pretty and they just re-did it!

The only thing they told me was that I would have to pay for 2008 and 2009, so that they can hold the date for me. Not too sure, I haven't paid anything yet, but I should call and confirm that we are OK. I'll let you know . . .

my fiance is greek and i am not, we would both like to get married in a Greek church but neither one of us know what the requirements are inorder to do this. we have both only been baptized and nothing else...we were looking into the Church in port jeff but i was hoping one of you may have advice to give since we haven't gotten the chance to get there yet. thanks sooo much!! please FM me any answers thanks girls!
