my fiance is greek and i am not, we would both like to get married in a Greek church but neither one of us know what the requirements are inorder to do this. we have both only been baptized and nothing else...we were looking into the Church in port jeff but i was hoping one of you may have advice to give since we haven't gotten the chance to get there yet. thanks sooo much!! please FM me any answers thanks girls!

I'm not Greek, we're getting married in a Greek church. The requirement was that one of us had been baptized in a GO church (FH was), and that the other has just been baptized somewhere. Just make sure u know where your baptism certificate is...

Lambathes are 2 very tall candles that are set up at the altar; sometimes the bride and groom hold 2 smaller candles during parts of the service (this varies)

Along with one person being baptized Greek-Orthodox, I believe the koumbaro/koumbara (= sponsors) have to also be baptized Greek-Orthodox...I could be wrong about this, so check with the church you'll be getting married at to be on the safe side. But I am sure that the koumbaro or koumbara has to show his/her baptismal certificate and have to become a member of a Greek-Orthodox Church.

You also need to get stefana, or crowns, for the crowning part of the ceremony.

I'll def have to look into the candles...

And you are 100% right, the koumbaro. I forgot about that b/c FH's brother is going to do it... only one of them has to be GO though, my MOH is going to be the koumbara, she just doesn't get to do any of the blessings b/c she's Jewish (well lol not because she's JEWISH, but b/c she's not GO). At least in our church that's what Father George said. But he seems to be a lot less strict on traditions than some of the other priests... he said there's vows in his ceremony, and we can wear our rings on the left hand.

We have looked into stefana online but we wanted to go to an actual store to pick them out b/c I already bought a stefanothiki and we want to make sure they fit , so thanks for all of the addresses!! Do you know if any of those places sell Jordan almonds also?

Glad I could help!

Wherever they sell stefana and lambathes, they should sell jordanian almonds. At least they include the jordanian almonds with the favors; I don't know if they sell a bag or box of loose ones.

If you want jordanian almonds in a box or bag, go to the store Titan (a few blocks away from St. Demetrios of Astoria and directly next door to GMV Music Superstore).

1- I went to my church in early January to pay my membership fee (and also made sure that our wedding is in the church schedule book). I asked the lady in the office (at St. D) when I should go back with FH to fill out paperwork for our November wedding and she said late August/early September. Does that sound right? We'd like to go there sooner to get things out of the way.

2- Other than our baptismal certificates and church memberships, what else do we need to bring to the church when filling out the paperwork?

3- I read a post on another thread about tipping the band...does that still apply for a Greek band? The money that's thrown during dancing goes to the band, so do they also get tipped at the end of the night?

hmm i cant help with one or two right now -- (i can ask) but for 3- we dont need to tip them they get hundreds of dollars off the floor!! wouldnt it be nice if the couple could get that $$ loll---

Well, I am getting married at St. Pauls in Hempstead and they told FH not to worry about coming in until August as well, and I am also getting married in November. Since I am not GO, Fh also asked about what paperwork we would need, and for the both of us, as long as we have our baptismal certificates we are good to go.

Now regarding the band tipping... that is a great question.....
