my fh brought up a good point by reminding me that money will not help them get the things they need now when the stores are washed away!

we are going shopping to buy non-perishable foods, baby formula and water and we will be going through our closets to give away any clothes and shoes we don't use now.

are they collecting this stuff yet? b/c I have old clothes- but they might not have a way to distrubute it yet- that's why they are asking for money?

no distribution yet.. money is best. even $5. and you know how it all ads up!

Money helps because it the relief organizations (like the Red Cross) can get the supplies they need to help people... the $$ isn't going directly to the people, its used to buy stuff for the people.

heres a better explanation (C&P):

The first priority is meeting the urgent, critical needs of those people, which include providing emergency shelter, food and water.

'In-kind donations are best when they come from companies that can provide new items in a quantity that meets the mass care needs of victims – for example, Anheuser-Busch is again donating canned water for hurricane victims and response workers, Unsolicited, spontaneous donations of goods and services from individuals and community groups, although well intentioned, have hidden costs and pose a number of complications for initial relief efforts.'

# Collections of items require valuable and scarce resources such as time, money, and personnel to sort, clean, and distribute them, which come at the expense of the emergency activities relief workers are attempting to perform. The Red Cross has neither the resources, nor the logistical set-up, to properly handle these types of donations, and therefore cannot accept them.
# In addition, because the organization has no way of knowing what spontaneous individual donations or unsolicited collections of items will consist of, and therefore cannot ensure there will be enough of a particular item to distribute it equitably, or if the donated products will even be appropriate for the relief effort.
# Shipping donated goods is also costly and particularly difficult in the aftermath of a disaster, as roads are often damaged or impassable, and easily clogged with shipments of non-priority items. The Red Cross makes every attempt to procure items locally to save money by minimizing transportation and storage costs.

Anyone close to Rte 110,my job The Hilton Long Island has bins set up for clothes, canned goods, etc. We are working with the Chris Duhon Foundation- he is a NBA player for the Chicago Bulls. Stop by anytime

My Fh works for GE and they sent 5 million along with donating medical supplies! Also, any $$$ the employees donate they will match! I am so glad they are doing this!

I am sure this is just a beginning for these large companies!

Bumping ...

As silly as this is, I requested a sample of a program from a company a week ago. I had no idea where they were located. I got this email today and I don't know why, but I just felt so awful (probably because while i am trying to get a stupid program, these people might have lost their whole business, lives, homes, etc.)

Anywho, I wrote them back wishing them the best and thought I'd post their email as they gave a site to also assist...

Be sure it is reputable!

I gave to the Red Cross, but the Salvation Army is a no-worry one too.

The company I work for is matching it's employees contributions to the Red Cross. Isn't that awesome? So my FH was going to give directly to the Red Cross but now he's giving it to me to add to my contribution so my company will double his too. I'm not one of those people that gives to charities all the time but this time it's important. Those people really need our help!

That's true! There's a whole bunch of jerks out there trying to capitalize on this disaster. DON'T give money to anyone unless you check out their organization first.

My company is tried to create a matching grant program of some kind so I'm waiting for that so my donation will be doubled and therefore more money for the cause. But, if it falls through, I'll be donating to the Red Cross.

My company (BBB) is also matching employee donations (so I'm donating through them). They are also donating all sorts of bedding supplies, extension cords and water.
