Re: Hurricane Katrina

Bump

You can donate your AMEX points. For every 1000 points you redeem AMEX will donate $5 to one of the charities they are associated with.

Re: Hurricane Katrina

once the water drains, only God knows what they will find. brace yourselves ladies...I have a feeling we haven't seen the worst of it.

If any of you work for a company or agency that gives to the United Way or has yearly campaigns, I urge you to give to them.

I am a coordinator for the Combined Federal Campaign in my office, which is a charity drive done every year with the United Way that allows you to give donations to many different charities at once. Every pay check I have a certain amount taken out of my check and donated to 5 different charities that help those in need both here and abroad. It's painless b/c I never see the $$, so I never miss it, and I know it's helping.

The people in New Orleans will need help long after the media spotlight has gone elsewhere...just like the victims of the Tsunami, who also STILL need our help.

God Bless everyone.

Re: Hurricane Katrina

Jessica:
We too have a state employees federal appeal. I used to be the campaign manager but gave it up as my work load increased. I've learned that they are going to start utilizing that to help. If anyone else works for a state agency, I can tell you that that program is a good one.

I came across this on Newsday and it relates to the Long Islanders:

L.I. to take 300 Katrina victims

As many as 300 Hurricane Katrina refugees could arrive on Long Island as soon as tomorrow, Nassau and Suffolk officials said.
At the request of the federal government, the two counties announced plans yesterday to shelter storm victims in hotels, church buildings and at Brunswick Hospital, which closed yesterday.

If you would like to offer housing assistance to people left homeless by Hurricane Katrina, call Nassau County offices at (516) 571-6000 for information.

Re: Hurricane Katrina

My friend just adopted a dog that was left behind in the hurricane. We also have donated money. And John is on the list to possibly go down to help out the mental health team. I can't even begin to imagine what these people are going through. I get upset just looking at the pictures... imagine living it!

I am proud of my LIW ladies for helping out!

Re: Hurricane Katrina

I found this out by accident- but American Airlines is giving miles to you to encourge people to donate when you donate money to the red cross (I need the miles- so I donated again)

August 31 through September 30, 2005, AAdvantage members will receive a one-time reward of 500 AAdvantage bonus miles when donating $50 or more to the red cross

and Amex is donating $1 everytime you use an Amex card to donate
