Re: My mother wants to wear black!
I am sorry if I offend anybody but is it that big of a deal? As long as the gown is appropriate (not too sexy, etc.) and mom is happy then who cares. My mom is wearing black (most likely) and like many others have said it is ELEGANT and CLASSY besides that it is such a minor detail and there is so much more to worry about.

Re: My mother wants to wear black!
My mother is wearing black and she is going to look beautiful. Black can be very elegant more so then other colors. I wouldn't be too worried if I were you. We are in the year 2006 anything goes now.

I'm with you on this one! I also don't want to offend anyone when i say this... but how cares about wearing black??? The only time you should have a problem is if she wore white IMO. Don't forget, your mom wants to look her nicest too and if she feels more comfortable in black... than why not? How do you like it when you're a BM in a wedding and you're stuck in a god awful dress that makes you look huge and you have no say about it? You're going to do that to your mom on her daughters wedding day? Wouldn't you have rather been in something that is flattering on you? I say let her wear it! Just my opinion.
Maybe since my mother was sick 5 years ago, my total attitude has changed. But the best thing i learned from her being sick... is don't sweat the small stuff and learn to pick your battles. Do you really want this to be a big deal?

Please help! What can I tell my mother to prevent her from wearing black? I think it is innappropriate and can't stand the thought of it. Her and my father believe I should have no say in the choice of her dress, and that it should be up to them.
My FMIL was thinking about wearing black. I'm totally with you and I hated the thought of it. It bothered me so much, FH was going to talk to her. But then she found her dress, and the one she loved was not black, so it ended up working out. But after that stress, I asked my grandmother and my aunt not to wear black. I told them how much it bothered me and they respected that. I know there are people who think you have no say, but the way I figure, if it bothers me that much, I don't think I could not talk to her about it. Good luck!

Yes she knows how I feel. I told her that I think black is a mourning color not a wedding color. She thinks it doesn't matter how I feel. Only how my father feels.
Can he be of any help? If you talk to him about it, maybe he'll try to influence her.
I know a lot of people think black is elegant and it's 2006 now, and so it shouldn't matter. But it still bothers me. The idea of my FMIL or grandmother wearing black just makes me ill. I don't care if my guests do it, but I just really find it inappropriate for them to do it. JMHO.

Re: My mother wants to wear black!
My mother wore black for my sisters wedding. Her dress was covered in heavy beading and crystals. Mom has her formal dresses custom made because of her size and she feels more comfortable that way.Allow me to shed some light on something. As many of you know, my mom fell last month breaking two of her vertebrae just a month and a half before the wedding that she is hosting at great expense and just six months after my father's unfortunate passing. While in the hospital, she claimed that the dress she had made for my wedding would be too binding on her and would prefer to wear a dress she already had - a dress she had made for my brother's wedding which was in navy blue. Mind you I had to fight her tooth and nail to get a new dress for my wedding (which is a wine color) because my BP is in navy and I did not want her to match. Well having the possibility of my mother not being there, becoming paralyzed or perhaps not making it through surgery, made me realize that I didnt care if she wore a potato sack or a hefty bag to the wedding. Im not looking for a pity party here, but it could be much worse for you.
Although she is cranky, she is alive and she will be there. Count your blessings that this dress thing could be your only minor road block in your planning.

It makes you ill?? I think you need to re-evaluate your priorities, no offense... You're a lucky person, I'd do anything to have my grandparents alive to see me get married... even if they were there in a burlap sack... JMO.

You should really be more careful before you respond that way because you don't know anything about me. I've lost both of my parents and 3 of my 4 grandparents. I'm only 25. It makes me ill because it's what I wore to their funerals and I don't want to think about their funerals on my wedding day. We all have are reasons for liking and not liking things - I just didn't really want to broadcast mine. You shouldn't be so quick to judge because there are probably things about a person or situation that you just don't know. Thanks for making me almost cry today.

Re: My mother wants to wear black!
Maybe I am out of the loop, but why should anyone have a say in what their mother wears? You pick the color for the BP not mom. I didn't even pick out my BM's dresses, left it up to them. Nobody made me pick a certain dress or color. Your mom wants to wear black, let her, its her dress. Black is very elegant for a wedding. Really don't see what the big deal is!!!

Every once in a while a horrified bride comes on here and makes this exact same post and I never understand it. Black is formal, elegant and beautiful and I'd much prefer it over some of the pastel colors I see many MOB dresses in. Let her wear what she wants.

You have to pick your battles and I think that this is one that you have to let go - with your wedding so close, it's really a lot to ask her to go out and buy a new gown.I'm sure that she'll look beautiful. Your day is so close - don't stress about this.

Actually, I remember my mom telling me that at her brother's wedding, all of the BM's wore black, and her older aunt was crying the whole time because it reminded her of a funeral.

And YES!!
You need to focus on your upcoming marriage, there are way worse things that could be happening. Who wears what should not be an issue. You're the bride...you have control over you and maybe the BP...that's it. Focus on the positive and the marriage and be glad that your Mom is healthy and willing to attend. That's more than some girls can say.
