so i signed up but i think i want to cancel cuz say i put in 15000 for the year itll only be 510 not bad but not great

What kind of return are you expecting? $510 a year isn't too bad for just parking money.

But of course if you would have went with Emigrant like I posted.... that same yearly return jumps up to $600.

$600 a year pays for my homeowners insurance! Free homeowners insurance for just parking my money. Not bad IMO.

yeah i guess its not bad compared to at citibank i'm getting like 1/5 of that

Try EmigrantDirect.com

They have historically better rates than ING Direct. Currently 4% compared to ING's 3.4%.

They also have just as good (if not better) service than ING.

I also think they have 4% interest checking!

4% is really good and 4% on checking?!!! wow we just put everything into a 6 month Money Market Account with Bank of America and its only 3.something and 0% on checking. Hopefully those rates will still be available when its time to renew ours.

Yup.... 4% checking! So you know that money that sits in your checking account doing nothing but waiting to pay bills... well that gets 4% interest as well! That can really add up!

Emigrant has had higher rates than ING for the past few years. ING used to be good... but they are getting too 'commercialized' where... other banks are beating them every time the fed increases rates.

The days of ING having the best rates are pretty much over. It also doesn't even pay to get CDs anymore when you can get 4% interest in a saving account and not have to worry about paying penalties if you have to withdraw the money for whatever reason.

I actually just signed up for a Presidential Bank checking and savings account. Their checking is 4% just like Emigrant... but they have 4.12% Savings currently. You need a 5k minimum balance on savings and 1k balance in checking though to avoid fees.

Read my post just above. I have citibank right now and I am pulling all my money out of their account and signed up with Presidential Bank. Way more interest!

I love ING.. I opened it up when I first saw the lion and the orange ball commercials. It was in 2003. I love it. It doesn't take long at all to transfer money out (1 business day) And I think I just got another interest raise the 6th since I've been a member.

The interest raises actually happen whenever the Fed increases their rates. The bank usually doesn't do this on their own... they adjust their rates depending on what the Fed does. When the Fed raises rates... all the banks pretty much do the same.

I have ING too. I've had it for YEARS... I'm pretty sure it was the first online savings account that offered such a competitive rate (it was 6% back then but dropped with every Fed drop, and has been increasing with every increase). HSBC does offer a higher rate at the moment, but HSBC is new to this from what I know. I have had my checking account with them for 3 years and I just recently started to hear about this online savings account. To be honest, I'm worried that they can keep it up. ING has a high rate because there's like no overhead - HSBC can't say the same thing because there are branches and ATM's, etc. while ING is mostly virtual, so I wonder if this will last. Emigrant is completely unknown to me... I'm planning on keeping my $ in ING for now and watching HSBC. I might start looking into Emigrant too as admittedly I'm intrigued. But as far as savings accounts go, these are by far the highest savings account rates you can get - most banks give 1-2%. Otherwise, you need to look at different vehicles for your $.

Hmmmm. There is an Emigrant Bank down the street from me. I have only gone inside once (they don't have a notary ) but I never checked rates. Is the 4% rate just for on-line accounts?

I think the high rate at HSBC is just for online accounts... Emigrant, I have no idea, but after what the girls above have said, I'm going to look into because 4% for checking, and for savings is amazing.

The emigrant 4% savings is only offered online at emigrantdirect.com. Its not available at the branches. Its just a good place to park some money and let the interest grow.

I do stand corrected on one thing though. Emigrant does not offer 4% checking though. I thought I read somewhere that they did... but I just checked for myself and they didn't.

Presidential Bank DOES offer 4% checking though... AND 4.12% savings!

http://www.presidentialbank.com

But bear in mind it can be a little difficult to open an account with them. They do a credit check to verify your address based on the Patriot Act. Then they may ask you to send them a utility bill, copies of your drivers licence, a copy of your marriage certificate if you are recently married. Bit of a pain... but they finally opened the account for me last week. Now that I have the checking account open with them... getting their savings opened will be easy.

But I did hear with Emigrant Direct... their savings account isn't too difficult to open. But like I said... its just savings.

Re: NWR ing direct

Yeah, I jumped on the ING bandwagon this summer...I figured it was a nice was to keep some spare change..you know for times when I really want that new gucci bag or shoes...you know the important stuff..lol or I thought It was a nice way to keep a vacation account...I set it so it automatically takes money from my reg. checking account and moves it into my ING twice a month. The rate has gone up frequently since opening it. I too bank with HSBC and wen in their asked about their new online account w/ the 3.4 percent interest...they just warned me that I can only make transactions online and I may only take money out of that account via an ATM..so basically I can't walk into the branch and withdraw money at the teller..so that's something you may want to keep in mind, but it may be a good way to have a christmas account or something like that.

I have ING & HSBC on-line accounts plus WAMU (business accounts) & Citibank (becoming just a pass through account) I like that I can get cash from the ATM with the HSBC 3.75% savings. It is on-line only.

I stopped by Emigrant to check them out too and it's the same as ING with the on-line account and having to move it to a checking account for access. ING has no ATM access like HSBC. HSBC charges for wire transfers. $15 for incoming not sure for outgoing You can make an ATM deposit. HSBC ATM withdrawals are free (typical for most banks I think). ING has no wire fees.

Go to a teller - who does that

Actually, I had to use a teller at WAMU today since they do not do wire transfers on-line. I have used Citibank for on-line wire transfers and it's great!!

I am considering a Commerce acct now just because some are open until 12 a.m. Some banks close at 3 p.m. And I ran into an issue with Citibank & HSBC being closed when I needed to get a cashier's check for a closing at like 3:45 p.m.

ETA - okay, I have an Emigrant account now too (or will after the deposits are verified) Gotta move everything from ING now.
