Sylvia, you'd be surprised what you can do when you KNOW what to do.

Maybe you're right...all I know is that I'd probably freeze...

Re: QOTD- How prepared are you to defend yourself?

Pretty prepared - 1st degree black belt in TKD although I haven't practiced in a while. I've been meaning to get a heavy bag for the basement so that I can get back into it - this thread is prompting me to get on it!

For people trained in physical defense, muscle memory is really the way that you can overcome the adrenaline/shock of being in a situation.

When faced with a situation where someone wants your stuff/$$, hand it over - it can be replaced. When someone wants to do you harm, fight to protect yourself.

In general, awareness of your surroundings is one of the most important defenses you can use. Be aware at all times. The person who's lingering a little too long in the parking lot - stop and look at them for a few moments so that they know you're aware of them and are keeping an eye on them. If it seems like that guy been following you for a few blocks, go into a shop for a few minutes and see what happens. Let potential attackers know that you are aware of them and they will likely look for someone who's likely to be less trouble.

Know where exits are, know where blind alleys/nooks are, be aware of your surroundings and position yourself so that you're less likely to be taken by surprise...

Re: QOTD- How prepared are you to defend yourself?

physically - i am a resourceful - i could make a deadly weapon out of as spoon. if that fails - i would claw someones eyes out before they would physically harm me!!!

i am unbelievably loud - and i definitely think that is an advantage in a situation like this. i literally have no idea how to whisper - and trust me - deaf people would hear me if i were being absucted or accosted.

mentally - i am one of those people who lets stuff hit her after its over. i would be too busy tearing someone face off to get scared and back down....

Re: QOTD- How prepared are you to defend yourself?

oh - and in all honestly - if you need to scream for help - it is true to never scream 'help'.
most people will not help you - scream directions 'CALL POLICE' 'THEIF - CALL POLICE' 'STOP THAT MAN' - it sounds silly but in those screams directions are being given.
'HELP' is too vague - it easier for people to MYOB and walk away.

you have to put in your mindset that when something is wrong with a situation you cannot MYOB. FH makes fun of me when i call 911 cause i see a bus sign flashing 'CALL 911' - i don't know what is going on on that bus - and if i were the bus driver - i would rather 100 people call in - than noone cause everyone thinks someone else will.

Re: QOTD- How prepared are you to defend yourself?

Well, I can put up a good fight and I'm a fast runner and have a damn good pair of lungs. I was told always to holler FIRE because people tend not to help when there is an attempted rape or something like that (it's the sad honest truth). If a gun is involved, yes it's a different story. But there is always a way out of it. Self defense will show you ways to get out of a grip, distract the assailant, etc. I took a class a long time ago, but I should definitely go again.

Re: QOTD- How prepared are you to defend yourself?

I've got a good set of lungs to yell for help and I can run fast, even in heels - I wouldn't even try fighting against someone if they had a weapon. I'd love to take some self defense classes.
