Shopping for Gown

I am going dress shopping with my mother this weekend, (first time) and was wondering which dress shop near or in Nassau County would be for the first place to go. I need a big selection because I am very picky, and I also want an attentive attendant.

I agree with your cousin...an announced dance (perhaps after the one with your father) would be sweet and appropriate. Perhaps you could ask him which song HE'D liked played...that way, he'll be included in the idea and be forewarned.

Jessica, I'm in the same boat. My father-in-law-to-be doesn't have a daughter either, and I would like to know some of the ideas you come across.

My future cousin in law works at The Bridal Couture in Manhasset on Northern Blvd. She's super helpful and LISTENS. She does not work on commission. Her shop was my first visit trying on dresses. I'd never really spent time w/her before & was very nervous...but she made me feel wonderful & special. The store is beautiful -

Her name is Dana & the number to the shop is 365-4632. Good luck!

Thanks for your help.

Actually, since we're having only a BM & MoH, to honor our 4 siblings, we've included them and their significant others in our procession.

If you feel like going into Manhattan you should try Michelle Roth on 57th Street. Cathy was my consultant and she was AMAZING!!! They are extremely helpful and really really nice. They will try and make you happy at any cost. The dresses are pricey though, so you might want to call them first to see if they are in your price range.

I'm not too familiar with Nassau County. I got my dress here in Suffolk and had a lady named Patti. She was out of this world. However, she got a new job at BRIDAL REFLECTIONS. I ironically bumped into her b.c we got lost and was looking for bridesmaid dresses. We went into her new shop. Had no idea she worked there. She's great. However, they are very expensive, out of my range. Like I said, I got my dress out here in Suffolk. BRIDAL REFLECTIONS is near David's Bridal. I think it's Carle Place. Patti was terrific. Good Luck

Shopping for Gown

My sister is going to Kleinfeld this Saturday, I am going with her. I got my gown from them in 1990 and was very happy with the selection. I know it is a very busy place and sometimes they just want to shoo you out of there as soon as possible. I am just wondering if anyone has had any problems with them in the past, and things that we may need to watch out for. Like, avoid a certain salesperson etc. I want this to be a pleasant experience for her. I know I had a great time getting my gown there, but, I also remember them being a bit abrasive.

I didn't go to Klienfeld's for that exact reason. I heard horror stories. I don't know of anyone in particular, but I went to Michelle Roth in manhattan and was treated like a princess and my mother a queen....I walked out thrilled to pieces!!!

I went to Kleinfield's in 1994 (my first marriage) and I hated it. The salesperson refused to show me certain dresses because as she eloquently pointed out "You can't afford that". Both my mother and I had a few words for her and we left. Overall, I found them to be very pretentious. Though, I must admit that this was probably due to the salesperson I had.

My advice is go with your gut feeling, if you feel that you aren't being treated right, LEAVE... This is your special day and you want to feel like a queen... no matter what the amount, this will probably be the most expensive article of clothing you have ever bought, you deserve to enjoy every moment of that purchase.

I am getting married 9/10/00. I went to Macy's Flowerama in Lake Grove (Suffolk). I don't remember my salesperson name, but they all seemed to be very attentive. They also had dresses in all price ranges.

I went to several bridal shops in Nassau. I got my dress from Lillette's in Baldwin. I've dealt with several of their salespeople and thought all were helpful. They have a large variety of dresses in many different sizes. I went to David's Bridal in Carle Place and can't say I was impressed with their service.

By the way, call the shops before you go. Many of them require appointments.

Good Luck!

Does anyone have any idea where I can find an "informal" dress for a couple of hundred (not thousands)? I don't want a huge pouffy dress. We're having a party that is more along the lines of cocktails & dinner with a wedding in between (Literally) in May 2000 (5-1/2 months to go!) Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and good luck to all!

Sue

Shopping for Gown/SUE

Hi Sue,

I cant say that I had any problem buying my dress at Davids Bridal. I was luck and was able to go on a thursday morning at 11am and I had made an appointment in advance so when I walked in my lady was standing close by and went right to it. She was able to guess my size right on the nose and spent alot of time with me. As far as the selection, for the style I was looking for I was very happy. This is my second time around and I was loking for something very pretty and simple. I found a great gown and took it home that day (it was off the rack but still sealed in plastic) It cost me all of $299.00. It has alot of pretty bead work and looks much more pricy. Give them a try, but its worth taking some time out durring the week if at all posable. The place was nice and quiet then...

You might want to try some high end bridesmaid dresses. They can be very attractive, within your budget & good quality. Good luck.

I also got my dress and my MOH's dress from Lillettes in Baldwin. I have to say the place is definitely not like a "coutore" place but the people were down to earth and made me feel so totally comfortable. The seamsters are all little italian ladies that are incredible(come from the old school and know how it should lay) My dress was pressed and stuffed beautifully all ready for my wedding day. I know tons of people who have been totally satisfied with them. :)

When calculating times, I work backwards. For example, in your case, start with the time you want to arrive at the ceremony site and then estimate the time of each task backwards. Deduct the travel time, time for pictures, make-up, hair, getting dressed etc. When you are done you will have arrived at the time you should begin getting ready. (Then add 1/2 hour for any delays that may occur.) It works for me.

I always find great dresses at Lord & Taylor - from casual to fancy. I'm not sure what they may have in white, but give them a try.

Good luck, Mark

Jennifer: Please try Adrienne's Bridal in Islip on Montauk Highway. It's a big beautiful victorian house with a wonderful selection. The rooms there are organized and beautiful. She is the oldest bridal shop on Long Island and her prices are approx. 275.00 off the rack to 800 brand new. I just bought my gown there in July and I paid 600 for a Demetrios. My sister bought her's there 5 years ago. She is wonderful and has a wonderful reputation. Going to dress shops can be a nightmare on weekends with a ton of ladies looking, no help, etc. She gives you your own personal helper and they help you try them on, etc. They have beautiful mirrors. I loved it and I'm looking forward to spending my fittings with my girls there taking pictures and having fun

Good luck, Mark

I too really like Patti. Bridal Reflections in Carle Place (also one in Massapequa which wasn't as helpful) is very shi-shi and you MUST make an appointment. But I went there and it was the classiest place I visited. I happened to buy my dress in a place which was the exact opposite in Commack, but my place had many dresses and the price was right. There is also David's Bridal in Carle Place. They're good because they have all different sizes ready for you to try on...you can get a good idea of what you want when a dress fits you better. Good Luck!

I tried on 100+ dresses, so I know many places in Nassau and Suffolk! Please let me know if you need feedback on a specific place.

Where is Bridal Reflections located. I live in the area, so the more specific you are the better. Do you have a person you dealt with at Bridal Reflections?

I really need a make-up person to come to my home May 26th, 2000. My photographer needs us ready at 10:30AM UGH! We will probably do make-up first at about ??????Time. We need to go up the street to get our hair done and be back by 10:30am for the photographer

Hi Jennifer,

It's at the corner of Westbury Ave and Glen Cove Road. It's almost across the street from Pier One. I don't remember what's in the parking lot, but I got the address and phone number in case you want to make an appointment. I had Patti as my consultant.

I just wanted to post my brief horror story regarding Bridal Reflections. I found my dress there and they were very helpful and attentive. However, they are very expensive. The dress was slightly above my price range and I asked if they could negotiate. They called over the manager and she acted like I was asking for her first child but eventually said she could take off about $100 (about 5%).

As I continued looking at dresses, I found the same dress at another store for about $600 cheaper than their original price. I had put down a $200 deposit and when I called to get my deposit back, they told me there was no way I could have found my dress for that price and that my bridal shop (in brooklyn) was selling me a copy. This outraged me!! I'm not sure who I dealt with but it was a really bad experience. Also, I never got my deposit back, they gave me store credit or something.
