FH and i are thinking of moving upstate just because of this problem, maybe by the outlets...there is no way we would pay or could pay what they are asking for in the 5 boros and even some parts of jersey

It is very depressing.. FH just got a 2-bedroom apt in Queens. The rent is double what his brother pays for his 3 bedroom big house upstate, including taxes!!
We have talked about leaving the NYC area, but we both have jobs that are difficult to find outside of here. I am not comitted to LI although it would be hard to leave because all my family and friends are here, but anywhere within an hour or so is just as expensive... We plan on renting for 5 years and see what happens then. Hopefully house prices will start to go down.

not every town in PA is in the middle of nowhere.. I am actually on a main road close to the PA turnpike, and I have stores all around me, outlets, a 24 hour walmart, home depot.. My fiance and I got jobs that pay twice as much as here and my mortgage is only $ 1,200 a month including taxes.. I really did not appreciate the comment on PA

You dont have to appreciate it, it was my opinion. She hates it there and they are moving back. Maybe you are not in the middle of nowhere, but they are.

And I live on Long Island and my mortgage is less than yours. So, it really depends on where you look, what you are willing to spend, and how much your taxes are. My taxes are 3500.00 a year. I got very lucky with my home.

Me personally, I cannot live in PA. My family lives here, and I dont want to have to drive 3 or 4 hours to see them, or them to have to drive that long to see me.

My fiance and I have been going to open houses in the Suffolk area to see houses in our price range. Pickins' are slim
I am not depressed though because I love L.I. and we will make it work somehow... but it does make me sick to know what I could have in another state for half the price! I just cannot leave the beach, the waves, the city, the shopping, my family, etc.

I am even more depressed that there is no way in hell we can even thin about lokoing - forget that - I think we'll be renting forever...

I agree with you, I didn't appreciate that comment either. here we are saying how excited we were to be moving to PA...and then have to read that.
PA is a big state....yes there are some areas that are pretty isolated, but that's not indicative of the entire state. Where we are moving...you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between there and suffolk county.

A nice...congrats on the moves girls would have been better!

And then there are areas way out East - forget about PA - we have boondocks right in our back yard... (not to say those expensive areas are boondocks - but you get my drift!!!)

My FH & I just bought a house after looking for 3 years!!! We did not settle for what we would not be 100% happy with. We took our time, and I can honestly say I love our house!!!!!!!!!!!! Trust me, there is definitely something out there for everyone. When I tell you how many houses I looked at and how many real estate agents I went with (because none of them had the patients to wait until FH and I found the perfect house for us) you would not believe me. My one major bit of advice, don't rush or settle for anything your not 100% happy with, and certainly don't let the real estate agent talk you into buying something you don't want. One lady tried to do that to FH & I. A basement was very important to us, and we looked at a house that I fell in love with. It was soooo beautiful, but it did not have a basement, and she was trying to talk us into getting it. I was so mad at her for even showing it to me knowing I wanted a house with a basement and I told her that I would not settle for one without. Some (not all) real estate agents don't listen to your requests and just show you anything and then try to talk you into it while they are showing you the house. FH & I took our time with the whole process and we ended up so happy. Don't rush, take your time, and look at all the houses you can. You will find it and it will be perfect!

I was talking about where my sister lives. I have no IDEA where in PA you are moving. I am glad you are happy to move to Pennsylvania. Great!

I myself, do not want to uproot my entire life because I cannot find a house I can afford in New York. If you look hard enough, you can find something if you really wanted to stay here. But, you want to move to PA, and thats great for you, seriously.


I know alot of people who have moved to PA, North Carolina, etc, and hate it.

My sister just bought a gorgeous house in Shoreham. Looks like the house is a mansion, but do I want to live in Shoreham just so I can have a huge house? No.

Guess what? People are allowed to have an opinion on this board, and not everyone has to like it.

I have to agree that I am totally depressed about house prices being as high as they are right now because FH and I are now house hunting. I don't want to buy anything that has a rental b/c I'm a bit uneasy at the thought of being home alone with a stranger in my basement. We're trying to find something we can afford on our own. Although, as a licensed realtor part of me is ecstatic at the thought of the house prices...

However, for those of you that are waiting for a huge drop in prices, don't hold your breath. The market actually had a 9% increase in prices last month. I don't expect prices to rise or drop, for the next few months I believe they will stabalize. And always keep in the back of your mind that mortgage rates went up a whole point last quarter. FM me if anyone has questions or needs help. I have a great track record in home sales in Nassau County...

We want to stay in Great Neck because my FI works downtown NYC and the commute is only 25 min to the city. We like that you can walk into town and go to restaurants, the movies, the gym, etc. But 2 bed, 1 bath apartments are selling between $399 and $599k, plus between $900 and $1200 maintenance per month, plus $60 to $100 for parking if you can be so lucky. And the places I've seen aren't so spectacular. I've been watching the market since August, and the prices haven't dropped. It's really ridiculous and upsetting.

Beyond sad about the whole ordeal-

bid on a house and waited a week and everything looked good and then we found out that the house was in a flood zone-deal did not go through-

Tried to bid on another house yesterday only to find out someone had bid 5 minutes before us.

Just seems like either you compromise what you want or you spend more then you want.

I am...I own a house now, but it's small. I really wish I just bought bigger to start with. I want to move int he next year or so, but I just dont know how we will afford any bigger than our shack....grrr

don't lose a house you love for a ten thousand dollar difference! That's not a lot in the long run... only a little bit more monthly! We bought the house we loved for fifteen thousand more than we offered... 5 thousand less than they did. Hey... anything in the 300's these days is as affordable as it gets!

We were going to buy a house as well and then couldn't find anything in our price range worth living in. We decided we'd rent for at least a year and then start seriously looking after the wedding. It was too much financial stress on us right now.

It's sad, I have so many friends in different parts of the country that have huge brand new homes!

FH and i gave up looking for awhile and we're just going to rent somewhere for a few months.

was looking at a real estate guide in Binghamton and found the most beautiful house with a huge kitchen and gorgeous indoor pool and jacuzzi for 150K. We can't even find a similar home to that one for under 600K in LI.
