Re: anyone else depressed about house hunting??

We live in Essex County in NJ... I won't even tell you what we ended up paying for a house, let alone what our taxes are! When we first started looking, our agent took us to a house that she described as a fixer upper....since when do fixer uppers cost $525k?????

Re: anyone else depressed about house hunting??

I wish we could move out of state but unless he gets a good paying job with a company that offers a transfer we are stuck here.

you can not move out of state with NY bills and expect things to be better unless you are making NY money and paying another states prices. If that makes any sense to you. I know what I mean but I am not sure if I am clear here.

Re: anyone else depressed about house hunting??

I know you're pain! My FH and I started looking and due to the prices, we felt depleted and stopped looking. Even if we could afford a house, we wouldn't be able to afford the taxes on LI. I'm originally from western NY and seeing this makes me want to leave LI, but my FH doesn't want to leave and I won't leave him. I'm sure we'll find something, but we've both decided to wait a couple years before we start looking again. In the mean time, we get to see our money sucked away on apartment rent, which is as ridiculous as the housing prices.

Re: anyone else depressed about house hunting??

Actually, I am not depressed about it simply because we are nowhere close to having enough for a down payment. We have a three bedroom apartment right now which is big enough to house us and one child comfortably - 2 tightly- and our plan is to buy a home before our first child starts kindergarten.

we just got pre-approved for a mortgage yesterday. we're going to have a realtor contact us next week and hopefully start looking (seriously) next weekend.

prices on homes have stabilized, but are still through the roof!

As soon as we get married we are moving out of Long Island. It is just getting ridiculous.

The only thing I am depressed about, is not being able to house hunt. We both have pretty good jobs, but are just starting out, so money for us.

I definately feel your pain.... Me and FI are planning on moving... We want to stay here because of our friends and family, but we also don't want to struggle for the rest of our lives financially.

Re: anyone else depressed about house hunting??

Oh yeah - my friends are signing a contract for a 2 bedroom APARTMENT in NYC for the same price as the gorgeous house you posted. And we're going to need at least THREE bedrooms so my mom can come live with us at some point. Guess I should start skipping the afternoon Starbucks trip - that $3.75 a day will really make a dent

I feel your pain. We're going to rent for a few years. We're not even candidates for a mortgage because FH's business is too new. (he's only open one year on his own) there is a fannie mae rule that says you have to be self employed at least two years to qualify. you're in a better position than most, so don't worry you will find something.

there are plenty of places that would give you a mortgage despite this. you'd just pay a higher rate.

Re: anyone else depressed about house hunting??

We went house hunting last year, and because of the prices we decided to relocate after the wedding. We're going to buy a house in Spring TX (outside of Houston). We get paid the same amount, but income tax is less, and for 200,000 you can get a drop dead gorgeous house!

Just so you guys all know.... The market is going to come down this spring... almost like 20 percent they are saying! One of my best friends owns a real estate company and told us the great info.

im not sure what info he is basing his belief on but i wouldnt bank on this. the market is showing signs of softening (very subtle signs) but the housing market just doesnt go down THAT fast. and if it did, we'd be in BIG trouble bc it would mean many of us would be unemployed. dont get me wrong, i'd love for that to happen too bc we're renting right now too but this scenario is pretty unlikely.

Re: anyone else depressed about house hunting??

I know what you mean. We just found our house after looking for 2 years. We realized there was nothing for us out on long island so we were looking for a house upstate and we found one. Its only 1 hour away from the city and we think well worth it.

Re: anyone else depressed about house hunting??

FH and I are discussing moving to Atlanta. The cost of houses there are a 1/4 of what they are here and you can get a HUGE house for $200,000. its cazy the prices here for so little!

A three bedroom? Nice. I live in a studio with my fh and our dog in NYC. I can't wait to get out of here!

I agree. no one has a crystal ball. anyone can speculate, but no one knows what the future will bring.
