nj, great idea about oriental trading!!
maybe we can make them little gift bags instead of toys, to keep our costs down...
I'll find out about what items would be best for these children. their ages, what types of activities they like, etc.

now, how to raise the money?
chip in ourselves? or ask for donations from our communities? I think lots of companies might give a few bucks.. but then theres the 'Who to make the check out to'...

UPDATE:

Got a call from Haveaheart.
They are a small nonprofit company. They raise money for families with ill children.
They dont have the children at their location, they simply send funds to the families.

I REALLY want to do something FOR and WITH the children. I asked her what hospitals they are at, and she said various hospitals all over.

Anyone have other suggestions of places where the children might be? I will call one or 2 hospitals to see what their policies and guidelines are.

What about an orphanage? I only know of the one in the Setauket area - Flower something?? I'm having a brain fart, sorry. We used to go there as a family when I was young - to donate toys and clothing and such.

I believe the charity you are mentioning is Little Flower Children's Services in Wading River. My Kiwanis club runs arts and crafts afternoons for the 8-15 year old boys and girls there on a regular basis. FM me if you would like the contact information.

Oh , I heard of Little Flower! My moms club did a garage sale to raise money for them earlier this year.

Should we bring our DH's? I think that would be nice!! They can also help out and they would feel good about themselves

Should we think of something to raise money to buy them one large gift? or little gifts for them all? I think the TV would be a nice idea, but its for the girls we have to include all of them, if we possibly can...

I think it would be a great idea to include FH/DH. I was telling FH about our plan and he was like 'I want to do something with you too'. I do a lot of volunteer work throughtout the year so it doesn't necessarily have to be this one that I ask him to join in on ... let's ee how the other girls feel first, if the majority prefers it just be us girls I'm ok with that too

ETS: I think we can easily help with the framed pictures/photos request for the kids to decorate their cottages...we can find prints/posters that are not too expensive and that the kids would love

Anna, please count me in on anything that transpires, as long as it's evenings or weekends.

There is a nursing home in Bellmore that I used to work at, right on Jerusalem just east of Newbridge Road. I was a recreation leader and I could talk to the woman I used to work for and see when they could use us. We'd just have to decide what we want to do.

I know Tammy mentioned one too, either is fine.

I really like this idea, but Wading River is a really long distance for me to travel. I know it's for a good cause and that may sound silly, but is there any way we can find something, perhaps in addition to that location, that is a little more centrally located? I'd really like to get involved, but that's a potential 2 hour trip for me each way and my car is not the most reliable.

I'd be interested too in doing something with you ladies. Please keep me updated on what you would like ... whether it be a donation or going somewhere to do something (please except singing - you'd cry if you heard my voice - and not in a good way).
Let me know if there is anything I can do.
I'm also from Queens so Nassau is prefferable but I have a car and can drive anywhere (and anyone can come with me if they need a ride.)
