I agree, and I thought about mentioning this in my previous post, that in some careers, their salary does rely on tips (waiters, etc) I do acknowledge that it does not apply to all wedding vendors. Please do not think this is directed at you, Mark, since I know photographers don`t do this. However, wedding vendors (at least the ones we`re talking about) don`t rely on tips. They definitely charge enough to make their business profitable, and it irks me that so many companies (mostly catering halls) add on a gratuity, before the service is even given. To me, that doesn`t make sense. Some places are changing the name to say 'service charge' which at least makes sense - if it`s a pre-set fee before the service is provided, then it`s not a tip, it`s just another charge. Believe me, I do plan to feed all of my vendors, as well as tip them, provided my wedding doesn``t get ruined up in any way!! I think in this area, it boils down to the fact that at least on LI, people hear the word 'wedding', and see dollar signs.

Teri, you are discusing a very delicate subject. Most vendors are honest but some low-ball the price just to get the job, After that ,who know`s. You have to feel comfortable tipping a person especially if he went the extra mile.

This is a hard question for me to answer. When I work for the Chapel they give me a salary, about 1/3 what I usually get, but that's fine by me with the volume it all works out well and people do usually tip in that circumstance. The rest of the time I don't have a fee. It's a suggested donation (which makes it tax deductible) I tell people ball park, but they should give me what they feel is right for them. We discuss money only once I do my best for everyone and whatever I get when it's all over is up to each couple. Sorry this probably didn't help with the question but as with most questions if you do what your heart tells you to do it's hard to go wrong! L&L, April

Teri, Yes, you're right that the industry is always looking for ways to make more $$$$. However, it still stands that ANY service personnel (dlivering furniture, home improvement, cab driver, bellhop, etc. etc.) might be considered for something extra to show appreciation for the extra effort (ONLY if you are happy with their work!) And in the real world, it is of course incentive to do a good job (or put in that extra effort that might not be expected.)Welcome New Vendors
