Any other MOB's having trouble finding a dress?
My mother and I have been from one end of long island malls to the next, and hit all the major department stores. The MOB dresses are either too matronly or prom dresses.Anyone's mother have a dress they adore? Where should we go?

Re: Any other MOB's having trouble finding a dress?
We had the exact same problem. We bought my moms dress online at JCPenney. They have different dresses online than they did at the store. I sent my mom 4 dresses to try and it only cost $15 shipping and handling. She liked 2 and returned 2. They had a nice selection.

Re: Any other MOB's having trouble finding a dress?
My mother had a hard time finding a dress. The first two dresses that she bought, were from Estelle's Dressy Dresses in Farmingdale on Route 110The second two dresses she bought were from Paradise Bridal. The have a clearance rack. She got a $150 dress for $50. And it fit perfect.
Check out bridal shops, usually they will have a rack of discontiuned dresses for a lot less money!^

Re: Any other MOB's having trouble finding a dress?
Mine was having a terrible time... until she decided to go for a bridesmaid dress! Some of the lines (Jim Hjelm, Belsoie, Watters) have some gorgeous dresses that could easily work for a MOB. Good luck!

Re: Any other MOB's having trouble finding a dress?
I hadn't thought of JC Penny's. That's a good idea. I think she is hesitant to purchase online because I have sent her the Chadwick's of Boston website multiple times but she hasn't acted. Thanks for the idea. My FI's mother got a dress at the Paradise dress place on Saturday.
I just want her to be in something she loves!!

Re: Any other MOB's having trouble finding a dress?
Check out Bridal Garden in Woodbury on Jericho Turnpike (I think it's Carmella's Bridal Garden)...my FH's mother got her dress there, it was ordered through Watters & Watters. Also, check out the Talbots catalogue if its not a black tie wedding, there are some nice MOB-type dresses in there.

Re: Any other MOB's having trouble finding a dress?
Just a little vent on this topic....I don't get why most stores only have MOB/MOG dresses in sizes from 2-14 and very little in 16 and up. Even thought most of the other dresses go up to size 26. A majority of weddings i have been to you will find mothers who are bigger woman....and not smaller.....i just think it would make more sense to have every dress in two sizes (say like an 8/10 and 20/22).I felt this way about my dress too...even though I am a size 8 and all the samples fit me, I was once at a store with two heavier girls who had to have their dresses pinned to them...I don't think that is fair when these woman are paying so much for these dresses and it is one of the most important decisions a bride makes in her wedding.

Re: Any other MOB's having trouble finding a dress?
here is a piece advice... don't look for a MOB/MOG dress.. just find something elegant.. she will stick outMOB/MOG are just labeled so they can hike up the price to $1000 or more and the majority are hideous-JMO
my mom says she wants to lose weight before we start looking but she will get what she wants i don't think i will have a say... very different tastes
try Saks fifth... they have a beautiful dress department (so does Bergdoff goodman and bendels- they have dresses under $1000 because they aren't labeled MOB/MOG)
also SUGAR PLUM.. i think that is in Plainview

Re: Any other MOB's having trouble finding a dress?
Tallulah in Woodbury is great. Gorgeous stuff. I promise it is not matronly or prom dress like. It's not cheap but they are incredible. Also a really good place is Filly's in Albertson. They have tons of dresses and they were gorgeous. Clifford Michael in Manhattan also has some nice stuff but I think you could get the same stuff at these other two stores I mentioned.
My mom ended up having her dress made. It's not saving her any money but at least she gets what she wants.
FM me if you want the name of the place. I wasn't with her so I don't know the name of the place. I think it's in Bellmore. My mom is very picky and she was very happy with them so far (haven't seen the final product yet)

Re: Any other MOB's having trouble finding a dress?
I hear you about going to Department stores, they have the same types of dresses for less money (except Macys in Manhasset). THe first store we went to wanted to charge over a $1,000 for a dress...i nearly freaked out.....since my dress is that amount!!! And trust me it was nothing...no beads...nothing.....I had to put my foot down

Re: Any other MOB's having trouble finding a dress?
Yeah, they are so matronly. I told my mom that I wanted her to get a dress that Madonna would wear to a wedding. She find that 'dress' at Sugar Plum in Lynbrook. U both should try there.

Re: Any other MOB's having trouble finding a dress?
We went to sugarplum.....I was not that happyy with them....the saleslady was very rude and would not let us speak...Example...she told my mom she can't wear silver because she is a blond, then i said well i want to see her in silver, she comes out in this dress and looked amazing and before i could say anything the lady was like you look amazing in silver....huh???
and I didn't like the fact they would not let us look through the racks. You told them what type of dress and what color and they went a picked it out....but for my mom who does not know what she wants I thought it was not a great idea......

Re: Any other MOB's having trouble finding a dress?
Thanks ladies for all of your suggestions! The small boutique stores are where we are going to have to look. We thought about the custom made but I don't think we will have enough time. Thanks again!
It looks like I am not the only one to find this challenging!
