Why Icelandic Children Love Getting Socks for Christmas.

You just can't make this stuff up...

An old Yule custom in Iceland includes the importance of getting new clothing Women spent many nights sewing so that each member of the household would get at least one new garment. As folklore had it, any person left out was in danger of being eaten by a malicious beast called the Christmas Cat.

Do you see those 13 rather sinister looking dwarves? Those are Iceland's beloved YULE LADS! And by 'beloved' I mean 'feared and dreaded'. Would anyone like to know the Yule Lads names? (oh, this is good...)

Candle Beggar
Sheep-fold Sneaker
Ladle Licker
Pot Scraper
Bowl Licker
Door Slammer
Sausage Snatcher
Window Peeper
Doorway Sniffer
Stumpy
Gully Gawk

Beginning on December 12 a different Lad would sneak into the villages at night.

Back to the group pictre. Those 2 tall and menacing characters in the back... they're Gryla, the yule lads mother, who was an ogress. Her favourite dish was a stew of naughty kids and she had an insatiable appetite. The other is the father, Leppalúdi. They own the Christmas cat and sic it on clothing-less children!
