Thinking of Moving to Florida????

With in the next 2 years, practicly my whole family will be in Florida, and it's amazing of the prices of homes there, New! We can't afford to buy a house here, it almost impossible. So I told my family, I would think about it. So I have been surfing the web and looking at new homes in Florida, and I can get a 4 bedroom, 2 bath, 2 car garage for $170,000... Isn't that sick..... I get excited, b/c I want my own home, but I can't think of leaving NY, my job and my close friends that I grew up with. I cry every time I think of it... Has anyone been in this situation.... I'm tired of renting, and I just want my own home, but NY has gotten ridiculous... Does anyone here live in Florida???? I know nothing about Florida, except that when I visit family down there, the people are too slow for me...

Re: Thinking of Moving to Florida????

I do, I do!
Where in FL are you thinking of moving to? I might be able to help if I know the area. DH and I are both from Long Island. We both moved down in 2000 and love it here! I don't think you could ever get me to move back to NY.
FM me at any time with questions!

Re: Thinking of Moving to Florida????

There is someone on the boards that has moved down here recently and lives near Tampa. On this early Sunday morning before breakfast, I can't think of who but when it comes to me later I will let you know.

I don't but wanted to ask what he does? Maybe he can also apply to OUC (Orlando Utilities Company)

What area are you looking to go to?

Re: Thinking of Moving to Florida????

we moved to GA for the very same reason that NY prices were out of hand. We also wanted something that we weren't finding in NY...people down here are nicer and friendlier, the pace of life is slower, and the living is easier

I could probably use the relaxed atmosphere... Any info on schools there, or are there any undesireable areas... Please FM if you feel weird answering that question... Thanks...

we are definitely moving there after the wedding!!! i cannot wait!! FH can relocate w/ his company, GE, but he has to wait until there is an opening in certain areas. we were really hoping for the orlando are, but right now west palm beach and miami are available!
we cannot afford miami, but west palm looks really nice! worse comes to worse maybe he will try to get in w/ sears down there. those of you who moved, what did you do for jobs?

Re: Thinking of Moving to Florida????

We are going in a week and a half to look at houses. My brother is there and mikes whole family is there. The only thing that makes me hesitant is leaving my mom here. I cant see spending the amount of money we are spending on rent when that could be a mortgage. I HATE it. Besides if we go there it we will get help.

Re: Thinking of Moving to Florida????

Move to Orlando! I need more LI girls here and then we can start having our own GTG's!

As for jobs, I moved here a few months after I graduated from college so it was not as much for a worry for me then.

DH and i actually started talking about this last night (so youll probably see MANY questions from me posted in the next week )... but one quick question...

How is Orlando during Hurricane season?? is it one of the areas that gets hit hard? (im really bad w/ NY geography, nevermind FL)

TIA!

Re: Thinking of Moving to Florida????

We have a house here (in Northport) but I am really getting sick of working in NYC and both of us pretty much working just to pay for a house! It's crazy.

We're trying to get pregnant and ince we do, I wont be able to work full time in NYC. So there goes half of our income.

I would LOVE to sell our house and move south - to SW Virginia since my Mom is there. We could sell our house here, pay off our mortgage, buy a new house in VA and still have $ to put in the bank.

DH says NO WAY. I wish he was more open to it.

was the damage Really bad??? DH and i were just looking at the real estate online for the last hour and we were starting to get worried that all the 'New construction' was new b/c the old houses got blown away

but when we were looking at the weather charts, it seemed like even with Ivan, Jeanne, and charley,,,, it didnt seem like Orlando got a horrible piece of it.

Our damage was about 5k which really is not that bad.
We live a bit north of Orlando, I am not sure what maps your checking but when Charley hit we were getting 115 sustained winds.
The other two were not as bad.

You will see a ton of new construction, not because of the hurricane's but because there is still a tremendous! amount of land in Florida that is not developed.

Re: Thinking of Moving to Florida????

Wow. is that damage covered by homeowners insurance, or is that out of pocket?

we were checking weatherpages.com with the orlando zip code. we have to start researching it, b/c i want to get a better idea of the area- jobs, schools, what surrounding areas are good/bad... i basically know nothing about Orlando/ Orange county and from our conversation tonight, i think FL may be our 1 yr plan. (depending on what we find)

ok, so i'll try to keep the 'bombarding you qith questions' to a minumum though
