When to start looking for a place to live???

FH and I don't 'officially' live together, nor do we plan to before the wedding. We will be coming up on our year mark on Saturday (WOOO HOOOOO ) and I am wondering...

when should we start looking? I am so afraid to find something that I LOVE early on that will be gone before we are ready....but right now we don't even know WHERE we'll end up..

hopefully we won't have to leave BKLYN (we are looking to either buy or rent an apt for now)

what are you guys doing?

My FI and I signed the lease for our apt just before we got engaged but didn't move in until after he proposed (he'd planned it that way). It makes planning for the wedding that much easier, one less thing to worry about. We started out by looking online @ apartments.com. They show you what's available in your area for what you can afford and what amenities you want. It was really helpful and I def recommend it, we love our place. I know other people who've used it and they're happy too. It's good to do your homework before you go out there and actually start looking.

This is an awsome post...because I am in the same boat. Fh and I don't live together either and don't want to until we're married. But he lives with his mom and I share a 2 BR w/ my brother. So we've tossed around the idea of staying in my apt until we find a house. But I kind of want to get a house right away! PLUS, FH talks about moving to FL!

Well me and FH live together but we are moving to PA. We are building our home which should start in June. I am very excited.

We already live together- in FMIL's house!! We are looking to buy a house, and will probably start looking more seriously around the 1 year mark.

also- FSIL has an AWESOME apartment in DUMBO that she may be moving out of in about 1 year- it is a beautifully renovated building, HUGE studio with nice views, balcony, close to subway, etc. It is $2k a month.

FM me if you want info- i know a few other people with apts for rent too.

We are goin to look for apartments around sep.....my Fh will live in it....fix it up....set it up....and ill move in after the wedding!!!

It depends what you are doing. In the case of either buying or renting an apt. in NYC, it's OK to start looking around early and getting an idea of what's out there, but you really have to act fast. If you see something you like, say, 4 months before you want to move in together, you have to either take it and move in early or forget about it. When we rented our apt., most were available a few weeks later. It's the same thing with buying as apts. go very quickly. Try newyork.craigslist.com, it's the best resource for rentals in NY.

we jumped the gun and bought a house together a year before the wedding. it was important to me to have the house/living situation settled before the wedding.

my goal was to come home from my honeymoon to a fully furnished home.

im busting my a ss to make that happen and its very hard!! but hopefully we will struggle for just a short while.

we already live together at FMIL's house... not the funnest thing... anyway, we recently started looking, I fell in love with a couple houses, then we realized if we started paying a morgage now, then we wouldnt be able to save anymore for the wedding, so we are goign to start seriously looking again after I find out for sure if I have a full time job next year (the school budget has to pass) It stunk falling in love with a house and then realizing you cant afford it yet... figure that once an offer is accepted on a house that it take a least a few more months before you can move in... Im hoping to be in a new home by the holidays...

We were positive that we wanted to live on LI, and that the house had to meet certain cirteria (large lot, somewhat of a fixer-uper, and a very good school disctict). After six months of looking at house and towns we bought a house that meet all of our criteria and more. We purchased in August and starting renovations this summer. We decided that we didn't want to live together until after the wedding, so right now we pay the mortagage and we both live at our parent's home. We are hoping that most of the house will be furnished by next July. It isn't easy saving for the wedding, paying a mortgage and doing renovatins. But we are getting by.

Seems like most of us are in the same boat right now. My FI lives right up the road from me with with his family and here I am with mine. We have briefly started looking for houses that are affordable. The minute we find some thing it's gone!! He's not really ready to start looking and I'm fearing we will have no place to go. There is no room in my house and his mother suggested we live in their basement. Mind you, it's a bedroom and bathroom. I would have to share the rest of their house. I sort of want 'our' own place to live. It's so hard...especially since houses these days are sooo expensive. I refuse to rent because that's where all of our money would go. Leaves most of us in a hard situation!! I am starting to look now but I have the FI who isn't really thrilled to be looking. Don't want to push him either...But we'll figure that out later I suppose!! Good luck to you :)

We will start looking 6 months in advance. We'll probably either rent or buy an apartment.

We live together now, but we are thinking about getting a condo or co-op. I think we are going to start looking in January or February -- but our lease is up in July, so we have a bit of time after the wedding.

We live together now at my parents house. We are going to start looking for our own place this summer that way we are settled in before the wedding plans really come into full swing.

Although we would love to buy something right away I don't think its possible. As of now, we're plannig on moving out next spring/early summer and living in an apt for maybe a year before buying. We're still figuring out if we want to stay on LI and if so where we want to live so renting is the best bet for us at this stage of the game.
