I wanted to say that you to all those that replied to my original post about finding a home on Long Island, and told me to go to Long Island Housing Partnership. My husband and I went to see a mortgage counselor this monday and we were soo happy. Unfortunately we are not near getting a mortgage due to our credit score, but she did explain our credit report and how we can fix things and learn about first time home buying. She really made it less stressful. Now we really can get a grasp on what the process entails. She also started a file for us so that when the time is right, we will have already started the paperwork!

You can also call Community Developement Corporation of Long Island (631) 471-1215. Gina Mazzara helped us. I joined the First Time Home Buyers Club which gives you a $5,000 grant. The CDC offers programs to that teach you all of the steps to buying a home from the loan, the explaining the inspection process, homeowner's insurance...

Gina also help us get a loan and told us about Fannymae with a 10,000 grant for down payment assistance and there is also a Nassau/Suffolk grant offered every April for 10,000 which is on a first come, first serve baises (all provided you are eligable for the grants there is a cap to the income).
