Why do hair and make-up trials cost $$?
This has been bugging me for a long time. Before these boards, I would have never guessed that hair and makeup artists charge you for a trial.Isn't this technically their chance to sell you on their services? Shouldnt they be trying to prove to you that you need professional makeup/hairstyle and they are the ones to do it?
RH dont charge for tastings, Photographers don't charge you when they send you samples of their work, etc.
Someone explain this to me!!

Re: Why do hair and make-up trials cost $$?
I agree, but the only reason I kind of see it is they are the ones that are actually performing the service. When you go to a hall you meet with someone, Photographer you usually meet someone other then the Photographer, and so on.I guess with Hair and Make-up also they are actually using the products right then and there.

Re: Why do hair and make-up trials cost $$?
You have a really good point. I didn't think about it that way. They shouldn't really be charging you for time bc they are trying to sell you their service. It's like an audition. A band/DJ doesn't charge you when you see a showcase.I can understand charging for products but that shouldn't be more than $25.

Re: Why do hair and make-up trials cost $$?
I don't agree... They are doing you a service I understand if it is not the full price of what they are going to do on the day of... Which most do not charge the full price for the trial... It is usually a discounted priceIt is not a 'consultation' it is a trial... They are using their time, and their products.
And to you point of RH not charging for tasting... Not all RH give free tasting... We had to pay for ours.
Sorry... JMO

Re: Why do hair and make-up trials cost $$?
I dont agree with the whole charging thing. I get that they charge for their time, but when its $50 for a trial, that more than likely isnt longer than an hour, , WOW Im in the wrong business..

Re: Why do hair and make-up trials cost $$?
I don't really agree with the charging as they are trying to get your business... but understand why they would have to charge something. For my sister's wedding, the hair trial was $50.00 but if you ended up booking her, you got the money back. She booked....she was FABULOUS!! but she moved to Georgia
I heard she'll come back if the wedding party is big enough...and I have 11 girls...not including MOB or FMIL..
So hopefully she'll go for it!!

Re: Why do hair and make-up trials cost $$?
Hmmm.. you all bring up good points.I understand that we are taking their time and using their products, but thats all part of sales. Like someone said, a band doesnt charge you for a showcase? And its not like we are asking for a trial for a Saturday afternoon in June when they are most likely going to have a wedding to do?
I think in any industry a part of sales is giving away something for free to prove to the potential customer that you are the one for them. i.e. alot of products having a 'Free, risk-free trial period'.
Im sure there are lesser-known hair dressers and makeup artists out there that may take this approach. Maybe when you are well-established enough you just don't bother with people that aren't willing to cough up the cash for a trial.
The bridal industry simply intrigues me.. it follows no real rules that exist in the normal consumer world.

I also agree. Products areused that they have to pay money for. If you dont book with them that is over an hour of their time down the drain.

Re: Why do hair and make-up trials cost $$?
I am still having a hard time digesting how much looking 'pretty' will cost for my wedding. When all is said and done it seems like it will cost like $500. Ugh. I would rather go to an expensive spa and pamper myself with that kind of money. How many people actually book their hair and makeup on their first trial? Getting your hair 'right' seems like a lengthy and expensive process. Is it really worth it? Are there other people out there who are just like ugh, why spend the money?
I know that when it comes down to it i will be planning trials and all that stuff, but ugh...does any one else feel this way or is this an enjoyable thing?
