NWR: Ladies who earned a Masters Degree on LI. Edited to ask a few more questions...

I'm thinking about going back for my masters, maybe in business.... I'm not really sure on the major though. But I wanted to know approximately how much it costs earn one? I know all schools prices are different, but I want a general idea, so I can prepare.

Are state schools cheaper for masters, maybe SUNY Old Westbury, or is it worth it to go to a private school such as Hofstra?

ETA:

Did a lot of you work and go to school at the same time? I worked while earning my bachelors and it was hard doing both. I'm wondering if it's too much stress to go for a masters and work too?

And since I haven't decided on what I want to master in yet, how about some info on a teaching masters...I don't have a bacholers in teaching, so I know I'll probably have to take education classes as well?

Thank you so much for all your info, planning my future is full of so many desisions! I wish I knew what I actually wanted to do!

Re: NWR: Ladies who earned a Masters Degree on LI

I went to a 3 yr full time Master's program at Hofstra - totally unrelated field from business - and it's costing me about $35,000.

Go to a state school if you can. At Dowling I pay around $1800 for a class, it stinks!!

Re: NWR: Ladies who earned a Masters Degree on LI

I got my masters in secondary education from Dowling and it cost me about $40,000 Not including all the books that the teachers require then don't even use. But no complaints...I loved it there and I will probably go back there for my administration degree.

Re: NWR: Ladies who earned a Masters Degree on LI

There are no state schools on long island that have great business schools, imo.

Unless you want to go to Baruch in the City (its a CUNY school)

I am doing my MBA at hofstra - $770 a credit

but Adelphi and Post are about the same price.

IDK how much St. John's is. But thats private too.

good luck!

Not true Stonybrook offers a Masters program for Business, Marketing and Finance. I went to Hofstra for my undergrad and in my opinion it was not worth the money spent. I don't think it matters too much (between private and state) unless you're graduating from an Ivy League school. JMO.

Is that new?? I started a year ago, so I did my research two years ago and I don't remember them having an MBA program.

Anyway, it is 60 credits compared to Hofstra, where I only have to do 41

eta: and I agree - there isnt much of a difference between public and private, except for the price! and I went to Hofstra for undergrad and thought I learned alot.

Re: NWR: Ladies who earned a Masters Degree on LI

I'm not sure how new the Masters program is at Stonybrook. I've only started to do research because I'm looking to go in January. There is a 60 credit and a 45 credit depending upon your work exp. I'm hoping that i qualify for the 45 credit degree!!!

Re: NWR: Ladies who earned a Masters Degree on LI

I obtained a master's from CUNY Queens in English Literature. I went full time, total cost was $5500. That's it but I took 15 credits a semester (30 credit master's + thesis).

Re: NWR: Ladies who earned a Masters Degree on LI

If there is a program available in a state school go there. State schools are cheaper for NYS residents and when you are doing a masters that is important (100% student financed, you can only get loans).

I would definitely decide on what you want to do first though. I am currently working on my masters. My field is very expensive and you pay by the credit.

Re: NWR: Ladies who earned a Masters Degree on LI

I attended Old Westbury for Undergrad, from what I recall it was pretty cheap. I hear they recently implemented a Master's program. I got my Executive MBA from Long Island University CW Post Campus, but my job paid for it, so it cost me nada.

Re: NWR: Ladies who earned a Masters Degree on LI

Definitely go public!!! For undergrad, I went to SUNY Binghamton and got my money's worth. Then I went to Hofstra for my Masters . . . it cost me 25k. My friend did the same program at Queens for like 6k.
