Weird meeting with neighbor ... NWR ...
So I am home last night and around 8:45 the doorbell rings. I go downstairs and answer it and find two women I have never met at the door. The younger one says she is my neighbor, and points to the house across the street, and that they are having a party and would like to invite me. The invite is in her hand. I figure it's a Tupperware or Pampered Chef kind of party, so I say, Oh, ok, how nice, it's Jennifer. She then asks for my last name, and I say, Oh, I don't like to give that out. The older woman, her mother, writes my name on the invite and hands it to me. The daughter then says the party is for her mom and dad, it's her mom's birthday and the parents' anniversary. How weird is that? Why would I go to a party for someone I have never met? Plus, the mom doesn't even speak English. So if I went, I wouldn't be able to communicate with her! And why the hell would they need my last name if they had planned all along to give me the invite right then and there (like they did)? That part freaked me out.
I was wondering why they would invite me. Maybe I waved to them once or twice while I was walking the dog, pulling out of my driveway, etc. Are they fishing for gifts? Do they not have any friends? I think it's the latter, in which case I feel very bad for them, but I think it would be more than awkward to go to a party for someone I do not know.
Do you think I even need to give a card??? There is a phone number on the invite for me to RSVP to ... I planned on putting a card in the mailbox this week and just writing in it, 'Sorry I cannot make the party.'
Is this not the oddest thing you have ever heard???

Re: Weird meeting with neighbor ... NWR ...
that is weird as hell
inviting a perfect stranger to a party? i mean i know it sounds cynical but i just don't trust stuff like that. yeah maybe they were tryign to be neighborly and nice in an old school way......but in this day and age it comes off as creepyi don't think you have to do much---if you want to be nice, drop a congratulations card or something in their mailbox. but you don't have to

As was I! It was SOOOO strange! I feel like I should drop a card in their mailbox just so they know I am not being rude. They seemed very nice but I just think it's weird.
If it were a Tupperware party, however, I probably would have gone. I used to sell candles and actually considered inviting the neighbors to my 'going-out-of-business' sale.

Re: Weird meeting with neighbor ... NWR ...
wow - i think that is so nice! i know it is totally strange but that must have been hard to get up the courage to do thatof course, i understand if you dont want to go and i totally agree you could write an RSVP no and leave it in the mailbox
maybe in a few weeks you can bring over some cookies or something? to show that you appreciated the gesture
i am such a dork, i would love to move to a small town where stuff like that happened all the time!

Re: Weird meeting with neighbor ... NWR ...
that is so nice of them, i always find it funny when americans (myself included sometimes) are weirded out by things other cultures do, and sometimes i wish we could be more like other cultures in the sense that they embrace and understand what is meant by love thy neighbors

Re: Weird meeting with neighbor ... NWR ...
I think it's a very nice gesture -- but the way things are today, I was suspicious in the beginning. When I thought about it a bit more, I thought that either they were just being neighborly or that they didn't have many people to invite .... I think it would be completely awkward to go but I do want to acknowledge the party.Maybe I will put a few scratchoffs in the card. (I think it's mainly a bday party.)

Re: Weird meeting with neighbor ... NWR ...
I know a few times people have had parties and invited the neighbors just so they would not be annoyed with the loudness of the party. Perhaps they invited you for this reason? I personally wouldn't go, but I think it's a nice gesture. A little weird, yes, that is is the Mom's b-day party, but whatever floats their boat.

Re: Weird meeting with neighbor ... NWR ...
To be honest with you, maybe they are planning on having a really loud party and decided to invite the neighbors so that they are aware and wont call the cops. Some people get mad if guest park in front of their house and might get upset. This way now you know and you cant complain.
This happens in apartment complexes all the time
