Are you taking his name...or hyphenating?

The trend among a lot of my married girlfriends seems to be hyphenating, you know like 'Jill Evans-Garrett.' I'm going to take my FH's name without hyphenating.

I'm curious -- what about you guys? And why are you choosing to hypenate...or not?

Re: Are you taking his name...or hyphenating?

No hyphenating for me, too long. It was either keep my name or change but it was important to me to change my name although it will take some getting used to.

Re: Are you taking his name...or hyphenating?

I thought I would never change my last name. In fact I told FH on our first date that I never intended on taking my husband's last name- it came up, dunno how. So, I would not change my name- but use his socially.

Since being with FH, my thoughts on this slightly changed, and a friend gave me an idea.

I am going to legally hyphenate my name- but I will continue to use my maiden name at work, or wherever I feel appropriate. I will use his last name socially, etc. I figure hyphenating allows me to use either last name as I see fit- and either one is part of my legal name.

Yeah - I think part of the whole getting married experience is to just take his name. I don't want to hyphenate. Most of my girlfriends are highly educated and feel that they don't want to 'lose their identity.' I know who I am no matter what.

Re: Are you taking his name...or hyphenating?

Taking his name.. I hate my last name. It's not the same as mine and I have no contact with my biological father and no use for the name.
However, I have always been called by my last name and not usually my first cuz it kind of funny so it will be really weird to lose it. MY Best friends even call me by my last name.

Taking his - I've been waiting 22 years to have a name that is not at the end of the alphabet! (i'm a Z - he's an H!)

Re: Are you taking his name...or hyphenating?

I can't wait to ditch my last name and take his!! When my brother got married three years ago, the person he married had the same first and middle name as me. So, when she took HIS last name, she took MY WHOLE NAME.

I jokingly told everyone I was going to marry the first guy that came along, so I could, once again, have my OWN name. I met my FH at their wedding. True story!!!

Re: Are you taking his name...or hyphenating?

I'm keeping my name. For me personally, the tradition does not make sense to me. I never understood why a woman has to face such a decision, but it is something men rarely worry about. I totally respect whatever decision folks make about this issue, but, for me, I love my name and don't plan on changing it (at least anytime soon).:)

My FI and I talked about it. He said he didn't care what I did, as long as I didn't hyphenate. I wouldn't have hypenated anyway, since our last names together sound like I am talking with a mouth full of marbles.
