Re: Greek Brides??

I was the koumpara for a wedding in Greece last year... from what I remember, Greece has great-and cheaper-koufeta (candy-covered almonds), the stefana (crowns) are also great and there's a better selection there, and they have nice display cases for you to put your stefana and/or bouquet after the wedding. I dont know how much you trust their taste for the stefana and the case...

I'll let you know if I think of anything else.

By the way, have you chosen a greek band yet? any suggestions?

Re: Greek Brides??

thanks! I've gotton some suggestions from The Knot.com - this is what she gave me
hi olga,
yes, they are all greek bands..........
i have the remaining phone #'s at home and will get them tonight.

the band that i chose - Somethin' Special is really good. they only
advertise by word of mouth, and they are excellent. their american is
awesome, and their greek is awesome.........they are a little pricey though
- they are in the $5K range. their repertoire is limitless (i have their
song lists - american and greek - and they have tons). if you call, speak to
Horatio and tell him that you are a friend of Harriet's (my wedding is
October 11, 2003).

the trouble that i find with greek bands is that their american singing is
terrible.
i saw VIPS at my friends wedding and didn't like them at all. ever since
their lead singer died 3 years ago, they have gone downhill.

alpha is a good band. they do both greek and american well. they were booked
for my wedding.

acoustics i'm not a big fan of. they are too 'rock and roll' for me. i was
looking for something more traditional and not too dj-ish.

also, mylos entertainment i hear is good, but they don't sing in american.
this is olympia and her husband savva. they actually live 2 blocks from me.
they provide you with a dj who takes over when there is no greek singing. i
wanted a live band for the american.

the trojans are old style, and their american music is limited. they cannot
do many songs.

there is also a group called grigoris maninakis and the microcosmos
orchestra (they just did my friend's wedding). they too, don't do american
very well.

stan wiest is an american band that hires out greek - he is extremely a
professional band - he too was booked for my wedding. he does big events
like the hellenic times dinner dance, etc. he is pricey.

there's a group called the caleps - they are really, really good. they are
an italian band, but have done many greek weddings. they are very pricey -
about $8K.

keep in mind though, music is a matter of taste. i'm extremely picky when it
comes to greek bands. there are few that are really good. it's a tough
decision to make. it's also what you envisioned seeing.

i can only give you my opinion.
hope this helps.

Hi Olgaki! I'm a greek bride too. Have you check out Powerstation for your band. That's who I am having at my wedding. You should def. get stefana and stefanothikes from Greece. They have a much nicer and wider selection. If you need any help let me know!!

Re: Greek Brides??

Hi Olga.... another Greeky here.... anyway - I would definitely ask her to pick up your stefana in Greece... only thing is - you don't have a choice then... Why don't you take a ride to Steinway and go do a run on them yourself.... FH and I did & it worked out best for us doing it that way since we were able to pick out stefana that we both liked!

P.S. For the koufeta - why don't you just go to a Bakaliko and get them when it gets closer to the wedding?

Re: Greek Brides??

Ok I'm the first bride of the day - but the church books weddings an hour and a half at a time. What are you doing about church decorations? Did you talk to the other person getting married that day to split costs or something?? Or is it correct etiquette to talk to the other bride of the day?

Re: Greek Brides??

I havent been to the florist yet so I have no clue how the church is even supposed to be decorated.

To be honest, I didn't know that you can share the church flowers until I read it on the boards a few days ago. I am not really sure. It would be great if I could do that, assuming the girl before and/or after does not have cheezy taste-- I might give the lady at the church my phone number and ask her to tell the other girls to call me if they're interested in sharing. That way I wont put anyone on the spot. What are you going to do?

Re: Greek Brides??

NO IDEA!!! Someone else who got married at St. Nicks told me that the church says its up to US to find the person and talk to them - they don't get involved! UGHH CHURCH LADIES. I'm going to mention it - I'm sure she hates me cause I'm before her and might cause her to be late (the priest I asked to come is known to be constantly late!) but ugh.. LET ME KNOW!!!
