OMG! I just saw my first hora and....

THEY DROPPED THE BRIDE!!!

That made me so upset I couldnt watch anymore, but then I still watched long enough to see them subsequently drop the biride's mother! I was SO upset I wanted to cry and I told FH there will be no hora at our wedding!

I always tell ppl that are willing to listen to me, that if they are not careful with me, I'll kick them while I'm up there...at least if I'm coming down, I'll take them down with me

Oh Lord, this is my BIGGEST fear!!! FH and I fight about this every day, I do NOT want to go up there!!!

I had a blast up there... it was like a ride at disney world i didnt want it to end.. my advice is to do it after salad but before entree when guests arent too alcohol'd up!!!

I hung on for dear life but I wouldn't have missed it for the world!! It was something I always dreamed about!

Ok-- I was going to write back- that it is just part of the hora and what is done at jewish weddings.. but then I referred to my trusty 'The New Jewish Wedding'.. and here ya go..

Basically- all the jewish dances are to dance before the bride and groom- treating them special.. It goes back to when wedding celebrations were held separately- with men being on one side and the women the other. The height (from the chairs) allowed for the bride and groom to catch a glimpse of each other. Also- and this is what they think the main reasoning behind it- the whole wedding ceremony/celebration is meant to treat the bride and groom like royalty- privileged and raised on chairs..

I think the bride was ok, she saw it coming. FH told me that while I turned away they actually dropped her AGAIN. I'd heard people talking about dropping her twice, but I didn't see it. The bride's mom I think got hurt pretty badly. The bride slide, but her mom just came down like a brick Everyone was kind of acting like nothing happenned and I was SO upset.

it was after the salad, before the entree, but people were already drunk, apparently.

I'm definite;y not doing it.

That is really crazy-- we are going to do the hora as I have seen it done at all my friends weddings..

First dance.. then hora, then chairs.. Right after everyone stuffs their faces at cocktail hour.

I hope the MOB is ok. Where was the wedding??

I didn't really speak to her, because I didn't know her, but I heard her say they had to pick her up off the floor (I coudln't see, ti was so crowded).

It was at the Hyatt Regency Penn's langing in Philadelphia.

ETA: this was my first time at a jewish wedding, actually and so much went wrong..I mean dropping the bride TWICE , and then the MOB. That's just insane. Also, the groom didn't break the glass on teh first try. I don't really believe in that stuff, but it was just too much with all the dropping!

I have NEVER seen these things happen. So, maybe it was just a not too well planned wedding.

The glass that is used- SHOULD be like a light bulb or test tube- something that shatters easily. For the problem that you saw.

Also, a good reception hall- and I am sure the Hyatt was- but maybe they do not do a ton of jewish weddings- anyway, they will have two good solid chairs, with arms to lift the bride and groom and family. You need to hold on otherwise, you can go flying. It could have also been the band- these chairs are usually put aside for the purpose of the hora.

The reception hall actually sucked in plain english, but that's another post. I KNOW the couple's been planning the wedding forevera nd it came off like something they planned last week. And the chairs were the regualr chairs fromt eh room, which were sort of dinky and had NO ARMS! The whole thing was SO terrifying to me!
