Re: OMG! I just saw my first hora and....

I can see why!

But, that is why people don't use those chairs.

Don't fear.. It is a great wedding tradition.

Re: OMG! I just saw my first hora and....

OY! My sister fell off the chair at her wedding, and I know at least two other people who did also. I was so convinced that I was going to fall off during my wedding that I was screaming the whole time. When Brad held out the napkin for us to hold on to together (bride and groom hold on to opposite ends of a napkin when they are on the chairs together), I would only let go for maybe 2 seconds!

Re: OMG! I just saw my first hora and....

That's when she fell! When he pulled out the napkin and she was trying to reach out to grab it! She didn't even reach out, she was trying to get the coruage to let go and then she slid off!

Re: OMG! I just saw my first hora and....

AHH!! My worst wedding nightmare. BTW, we finally purchased a scanner today, so sometime in the next few days I will be FINALLY posting wedding pics...you can see the terror on my face during the horror

ETA:
I actually wrote 'horror' instead of 'hora'...what kind of slip was that!

Re: OMG! I just saw my first hora and....

We made the hora/horror joke a few times! I can't wait to see the pics!

Anyway, i really loved seeing my first jewish ceremony. it was really beautiful and meaningful. I also saw a tradition i don't think I'd ever heard of. The bride and groom circlesd the bride's parents 3 times (this was at the reception), once for past, present and future and put crowns of leaves on their heads. is this a jewish tradition? Afterward everyone started doing the hora again...except without the chairs this time!

Re: OMG! I just saw my first hora and....

Ok now I am really petrified about this!! We were at a wedding last November where the grooms father slid right off the chair as they were lifting it into the air, and he landed smack on his butt!!! Ever since then I have been petrified....not even so much for FH and me, but for our parents who are not as young and physically resilient as we are!!

Was it the last child married off for each set of parents? I think if it is, they do the crown thing.

Re: OMG! I just saw my first hora and....

It sounds like what you saw was the 'Mazinkeh Tants' (Mazinka Dance) Were either the bride or groom the last child in their family to get married? A Mazinkeh is 'a special dance for the parents when either the bride or the groom is the last child of the family to be married.' (Everything Jewish Wedding Book). The parents are seated in the center of a circle with wreaths of leaves on their heads and everyone sings and dances in their honor. I've never seen the bride and groom circle their parents before, though.

Re: OMG! I just saw my first hora and....

They only circled the brid'e sparents, and I'm not sure if she was the last one, but it's posisble. That must have been it. I'd never heard of that before. It's really interesting. I wonder why the last child getting amrried is a particularly important time to honor the parents.

Re: OMG! I just saw my first hora and....

well, according the the Everything Jewish Wedding Book, 'This is a unique recognition of the 'empty nest' and the accomplishment of the classic Jewish goal - marrying off all one's children.'

I'm wondering if Anita Diamant has a better explanation in her book, but I can't find my copy at the moment..

Ok-- I got it..

the dance is a tribute to the mother who had brought her last daughter to the canopy.. Now it is done with both parents- and bringing their last child up to the chuppah. The dance celebrates the completion of their parental responsibility.

Re: OMG! I just saw my first hora and....

I know someone who banged there head on the ceiling!!!!!!!!!! They were okay but that is what made me not want to have a hora... So we spoke to the DJ and he told us to dance in the middle and the BP circles us. So that is what we did. I am terrified of heights!

Re: OMG! I just saw my first hora and....

I requested chairs with arms for our hora. Of course they forgot but I sat with the back of the chair on my side so I could hold on for dear life.

I was fine and so was my DH and parents, however when watching it in the video I am amazed we didnt fall.

We did the hora right after the first dance....it was so much fun I wish I could do it again!

You don't have to get up on the chairs..you can just have the hora without it.

Re: OMG! I just saw my first hora and....

It's nothing to worry about - they dropped DH at our wedding, and once I got over the initial shock, and found out he was fine, the party went on as planned. Actually, it's one of my favorite moments of the day.

Hmmmm....

Wasn't it YOUR DH, Jax 430, who was one of the guys holding Adam's chair?

Yep, that's him, in the shiny blue yarmulke!

Luv ya, Jackie.

Yes, my DH was partially responsible for dropping your DH! Don't worry, I teased him about it afterwards!

LOL, Good!

And btw, LBF404's DH is in the non-shiny blue Yarmulke right NEXT to Jax's DH.

Love Our Boys, really.
