teacher brides - question

Ok, I'm starting to wonder if I'm doing a stupid thing by planning my wedding for October instead of the summer, when I'll be off.

Just to clarify, I'm currently a grad student, but I am hoping to have a teaching job (high school) for next September. If I don't... well... I'm kind of screwed. (anybody know of any openings? ) All of my wedding plans are based around the idea that I will already have been working for a year by that point (otherwise I can't afford to move out of my parents' house...)

I chose Columbus day weekend so I would have a 3 day weekend, and FH and I plan to go on a mini-honeymoon, go straight from the party out to a bed and breakfast in Montauk somewhere, and come back on Monday, be back at school by Tuesday (maybe get one extra day off if I can). I'm fine with not taking a full honeymoon for a couple of months - I'm not much of a traveller anyway, and I think it will be nice after the first few hectic months of marriage to go away together and sort of re-affirm things then.

I'm just starting to wonder if I'm doing something stupid... the reason we chose October instead of summer is because I just really DON'T want a summer wedding - don't want to deal with all the heat and humidity, is really what it comes down to. I want an outdoor ceremony, and I don't want to be dripping sweat down my gown. And it was either Fall 2007 or Spring 2008, and I just don't want to wait that long.

I don't know why I'm stressing about this now... we already have the hall booked. I think it's because my mom keeps going 'are you sure you don't want to get married in the summer? We can still change it...'

So, what do you think? Am I doing a stupid thing getting married in October? What month are all you teacher brides out there getting married in?

eta: I think some people are getting confused... I do not plan on getting married this coming October, 2 months into my first year of teaching. That would be insane. I'm talking about the following October, in 2007. Also, I am not talking about taking any extra days off, that was the point of the 3 day weekend.

OK I am getting married in September while I will be student teaching. YUCK, but if October is when you want to get married then stick with it! Its' your day, no matter january or june...

Just keep in mind that as a first year teacher (hopefully you get a job right away) you are going to be swamped with work. It is very demanding and most districts will not allow people especially first year teachers to take time off during the very beginning of the school year. So think about this now because like your mom said it would be no biggie to change your mind right now. Why not June 2007? That would be perfect!

i will be done student teaching in dec of 06 and we will be getting married in april of 07 . I am honestly not sure that i will have a stable position at that point or i might take a sub position just to make it easier to take time. we are getting married the weekend after easter so that i have time off before hand and plan on taking just a week honeymoon so that i dont miss too much. i'd say do what makes you happy. i personally dont want a summer wedding for the same reason.. i refuse to be sweating on my wedding too due to heat. Its up to you though and FH of course! good luck

I am in the same boat. Our wedding is 10/28/06. At the time I booked I was an Office Manager. I got laid off and decided to attemp teaching again ( I have my initail certificate). So I am now subing hoping to get a job next school year. I never though about it interfering with my wedding.

First of all - don't count on getting a job your first year looking. I interviewed for a FULL CALANDER YEAR in 2000 and never got a job
- it really takes alot of - 'time put in' ie. suing.

So my suggestion is to consider subing or a teachers aid position (not as much responsability) and maybe after your wedding the position could always turn into something more.....

Actually, the plan is for June 2007 to be the end of my first year of teaching, and October 2007 to be the beginning of my second year of teaching - I hope to start September 2006.

That's actually why we're waiting until fall 2007 or spring 2008 - so I can be past year one of teaching.

June is also kind of into summer weather already... thanks though!

i am TOTALLY in the same boat as you! Listen to the similarities:
I am in training to be a school psychologist and am looking to get a job in Sept of this year. My wedding is also columbus day weekend, but of 2006 not 2007. And my FH and i plan on taking a mini-honeymoon that weekend, and I'll take the Tues after the wedding off as well so we can enjoy one extra day. And then we'll take a real honeymoon later on that year. Also, I did not want a summer wedding b/c i hate the heat and humidity of LI.
So, as someone who seems to know what you're thinking about, I say, keep the october wedding date as long as it makes you happy. I think it is totally do-able. This is about you and your FH, and not anyone else. Just imagine the wedding you have dreamed of, except that instead of fall weather it's hot...will you be happy? That is the question to ask yourself.

i plan on being a teacher, but esl teacher at a private english school. my situation is a little different from yours, but i thought i would say i dont think there is anything wrong with taking a honeymoon a few months after the wedding, especially if you dont have time. that is what i am doing. a small get away then somewhere nice in a few months. plus instead of everything being over so quickly, you can focus on the wedding, then in a few months focus on the honeymoon. it will stretch it out.

Can you tell me why you wouldn't get married over a 3 day weekend? I really need reasons so that I can weigh my options here.

And the problem with doing spring break is that then I'll have to wait until spring of 2008, and I really don't want to wait that long - we'll already be enaged for almost 3 years by October 2007.

I also won't necessarily know when spring break will be until I get a job, as it can be different for different districts, or different for a private school vs a public school.

I too have a similar problem...I'm starting graduate school for teaching in january. Since I wasn't an education major in college, I have to take some courses before I will be certified. By the time I get married, I could have a teaching position. Since my wedding is December 29th if I have a job (and I hope I do!) then I'll have to take some time off as well. I think they are used to it and if you're not upset at not taking a HM right away then they shouldn't be upset if you take a couple extra days off.

I am a teacher...

If you get a brand new teaching job.. you def do NOT want to take any days off after a vacation, especially so early in OCtober. It is very sort of taboo to take days before or after a vacation before you get tenure and even after.

Im not getting married for another 2 years and in September will have a teaching job in queens. I have an undergrad degree in childhood education 1-6 and now im working on my masters for special ed. Anyway both my FI and I are teachers and were having a december wedding. we wont be taking our honeymoon until our spring break. my wedding is on a friday so i will be taking off that friday and maybe thursday but thats it. so im hoping that missing two days isnt a problem after ive been working at the school for almost 2 years. who knows tho. if worse comes to worse, ill just take off that friday. anyway, i wouldnt worry about your decision. just take your honeymoon when you have off.

i teach first grade and have had people I worked with over the years get married on that same weekend. They all took like a day or two off to get things finalized and prepared, and they were fine. I'm getting married Friday Dec 15th and will have a similar situation... if i were you I'd get a lot of your things done over the summer so are not too stressed.

I am a teacher and I am getting married in the beginning of December.
It is not highly recommended but it is my wedding and I am choosing to wait for a honeymoon.

I am a teacher and I am getting married in July--I never thought I would have a summer wedding--I am not one for the extreme heat--But it just worked for me for a couple of reasons. I will have a nice week off before the wedding-then after the wedding I will be able to relax for 7 weeks. I won't have to worry about my students and lesson planning--I will be able to get adjusted to married life and enjoy it!!!! I agree that the heat and humidity are negatives--but for me the positives outweighed the negatives. I am sure no matter what you chose will be great and you will be happy--Good Luck!!!!!!!

I am having a destination wedding in Ireland in February. I am getting married the first saturday of the break, then when are going on our honeymoon on Monday.

I am going to ask for 3 unpaid personal days so I can land in Ireland the Wed. before the wedding.

That will be my 3rd year teaching, if say no, I will say 'F- u I am getting married!'

WE ARE DOING THE SAME THING!!!!

FH is currently a teacher, but will NOT have tenure by our date. We realllllllly want a winter wedding... so we chose the day after -T-day --- mini-moon for 3 days, then weeklong honeymoon Dec 26th.

My parents think we're crazy and they HATE the idea that we'll both be back to work 5 days after the wedding...but OH WELL.

I think it'll work out JUST FINE.

I would be very careful about getting married in October if you are planning on being a teacher. You will most likely NOT be able to take any days off around the holiday. In many, many districts, if you take off the day before or the day after a holiday weekend or vacation, you do not get paid for the holiday. I am a teacher and planned my wedding for the beginning of July for this reason. My sister is also a teacher and had her wedding this past April, however, she did it the first weekend in a week long vacation.
While your wedding is an extremely important event, your professional career that you've spent years working towards is incredibly important, as well. As a teacher, your reputation as being reliable is SO important. I cannot stress that enough. ESPECIALLY if you do not have tenure. I've known plenty of people who have been denied tenure for taking SICK days that were allotted to them. OR, they have had to make up those days before they could be granted tenure.
If you are able to plan your wedding for a longer vacation, then I would. You don't necessarily need to do it over the summer, however, it is extremely hard to predict the vacations of a hypothetical job you are hoping to have.

As a teacher Im telling you, if you want to do it then you have nothing to worry about. I did enjoy having it in the summer because running around beforehand was easier, but I did it in 4 months. If you're worried about a honeymoon you can take one at any time.

I wouldnt worry

BTW One of my teacher friends just got married in October and it was in Florida!

I am first year-first grade teacher. First year grad school. I know what you mean and I am getting married in April. I could NOT get married in the summer with the heat and things are so crazy in the begining of the school year that I could never have my wedding in Oct since I would be stressing too much. Fall is nice and I love it but I work through lunches and preps to make sure all is prepared for class. April kinda settles down at school. FH is cop so it does not matter. There are 4-5 weddings this year in my building and eveyone else is over the summer. I am going to take off for the wedding day (friday) and maybe still thinking of going away for a few days. Still unsure but I am glad it is in April. I want to the kiddies there too in my pics at the church.
