Orange Films
 Interviewed Aug 8, 2008
"I am attracted to drama or a story in people" (by Rudolphe Simeon, Art Director/Photographer).
And, telling your story with a dramatic and cinematographic flair is the driving passion behind the work of Orange Films.
1. What services do you offer?
We take “photo-journalism” to the next, personal level, creating one-of-a-kind, wedding and event videography with a dynamic and dramatic feel and flair. In fact, we don’t just shoot video; we shoot every couple’s unique and special love story.
2. What are some of the latest trends in videography?
The industry is taking a very distinctive 180-degree turn. With lots of young, talented creative artists in the photography field, wedding videography is transitioning into a unique and expressive art form. In fact, it is an emotional and intriguing story of the day, with many wedding films building on the same principles as documentaries, motion pictures and TV shows, and they include:
- Wedding Trailer - a Hollywood inspired few minutes preview of your event.
- Moving to HD technology provides much more advanced camera capabilities, improves colors, sound, etc.
- Good old photomontage turns into the documentary incorporating also family videos and interviews or creating one-of-a-kind custom animations.
3. How many video cameras do you usually take to a shoot?
I prefer to tape the event with at least two cameras. It adds a dynamic edge to the film and allows capturing episodes that could be critical to the final result and could not be done with one camera coverage. In addition, it also gives us an opportunity to take the needed formal shots as well as creative shots of the same episode. However, it all comes down to what the client is comfortable with and requests.
4. How long does it take to edit a package?
It depends on the job and the number of cameras. Typically speaking however, it takes anywhere from 30-40 to 60-80 hours.
5. What makes your work unique and/or exceptional?
What makes my work unique, in my opinion, is strong creative background and attention to detail. I use my artistic skills to capture the shots that many people cannot see. Sometimes, the same episode but filmed from the different angle or with an extra attention to some small detail will have completely different emotional impact on the viewer. Every detail has to communicate and to build an emotion. I am approaching every film as an art project, each stage of which should be executed perfectly. As a former art director, I compose many of my shots from artistic point of view. Imagine the cover of a fashion magazine, the billboard or the work of creative photographer put into the motion that is what I am trying to achieve. Color for me is another language to express emotions. That is why all my work is color adjusted. Typography, even though it is used for titles only, is not a detail that is being ignored.
My goal is not to create a perfect wedding film, but to create a unique and personal story of every couple. The key here is one-on-one relationship with the client. The couples are NOT meeting the salesman or the owner of the company, but a professional who will sign the contract, film the event, edit and deliver.
6. What can couples expect when they work with you?
I work with the couple closely from the very start. I meet them, I listen to them, I try to understand what kind of people they are, their personalities, style, taste, music preferences, etc. I take into consideration everything from the cultural backgrounds to venue, season, etc. Every detail, large or small is important for filming and editing. So, even before the event I have a strategy as to what I envision and want to accomplish and how I will achieve that, and all in a way that’s discreet and unobtrusive, so the couple and their guests don’t feel “invaded” as they try to enjoy their very special day.
7. Do you offer any special effects, especially during the editing process?
I do cinematic creative editing, incorporating a lot of different techniques into my editing process, making the “movie” classy, elegant and enhancing its emotional impact on the viewer. Some people consider certain editing techniques to be special effects such as old movie look, black and white, etc. I neither offer them nor do I charge for them. They are part of creating a movie, and each effect is used for a reason. Only the professional making the film can judge what effects to use, where to use them and to what degree.
8. Tell us about some of the most creative projects you’ve done and how couples can work with you to help make all the magic happen.
I like when couples share their crazy ideas with me, and are willing to go completely out-of the-box to execute them. For example, recently I’ve made untraditional love story for one couple. They wanted the short film inspired by old Thief of Baghdad movie dated back to 1923 but humorous and with a modern twist. Needless to say, we had a lot of fun, turning the house in NJ into place in Baghdad, shooting some scenes in the Times Square and around the city. The end result was 15 minutes old, black and white film put to some dramatic music, modern subtitles and with director’s cut at the end.
The only way the couples can make all the magic happen is not to be afraid to share with me what they have on their mind and be open to new ideas.
9. When should a couple book with you?
Because Orange Films specializes in personal, custom work we can’t take more than one job per day. All jobs are booked on first come first serve basis. So, if you want to work with us, please contact Orange Films at your earliest convenience
