It would appear that us name keepers are very much in the minority. I'm keeping my name. The kids (if there are any, we haven't gotten that far yet) will have my name. He's more than welcome to change his name if he wants the same name as his kids. I have plenty of reasons for keeping my name, the biggest one being that I've never wanted to change my name and I don't see any reason to. He doesn't mind that I don't want to change my name. I do like the idea of us having the same name, I think it's nice and makes you more of a family, but I come from a family of girls, so there's no one to continue our name (he's the only boy in his family, so the same for him, I guess). Plus he doesn't even go by his legal name professionally, so it would be extremely confusing. Anyway, I think it's great for a married couple to have the same name, but the idea that the woman has to take the man's name doesn't settle well with me.
*steps down from soap box*
I am not sure what I am doing yet. I am def. apprehensive about changing my name but I'm open to it. I am educated and career oriented - have many professional goals and have reached several already. A name is a name (to me.)
Also, just to clarify - when you have children your kids will have your last name?
Edited after I was enlightened about the meaning of 'steps down from the soap box' lol Dont mind my foolishness
Anyway - My point, for some reason, I dont think changing or not changing your last name is that big a deal but I can understand that others hold a higher meaning to the transition.
*Steps down from the soap box* lol

I am not sure what I am doing yet. I am def. apprehensive about changing my name but I'm open to it. As far as it being *steps down from the soap box* I highly disagree. While I respect your opinion I dont think if I change my name that I will be taking a 'step down.' I am educated and career oriented - have many professional goals and have reached several already. Just in defense of stephanie- by saying stepping down from soapbox, she wasn't saying taking FH last name is a 'step down' - getting on a soap box is a saying that is used when people speak their opinions about something. So by saying stepping off the soapbox, she was just saying she was finished stating her piece.

haha well thanks for clearing that up! I feel silly - I never heard that expression and was just gathering meaning from the context. Thanks for the tip tho!

Re: Are you taking your FH's last name?
Still struggling with this.My last name is long and often mispronouced although not too badly but I feel like i have suffered with it for so long that it's a part of who I am. FH's is short and easy but dosent necessisarly have a great ring when its with my first name.
FH who is never liek this says he really want me to change it but when i asked him why he couldnt give me an answer. i tried to explain how because he was not being asked to change his name that he coudnt understand how it makes me feel like I wont be myself. I told him if he comes up with a valid reason why it is so important to him then i will take it seriously into consideration but otherwise it is my decision and he will have to deal with my choice.
If I hyphenate it becomes really long but i would only hyphenate me I suppose not any kids we would have either that or using mine as a middle name since i dont have one or just using mine professionally and his domestically...who knows...at least theres still plenty of time to make myself crazy with this
