Milleridge Florist

I will be getting married in April 2000 at the GW Manor. The florist that they recommend is their house florist, Milleridge Florist, which they also own. Does anyone have any experience with them and their work? Any comments would be greatly appreicated.

Just thought I'd share...

The article from the Better Business Bureau I referred to on an earlier posting suggested looking at the garment tag of your wedding gown to ensure you're paying the right price for the right material...for example, why pay the price of silk when you're getting rayon??? Well, ladies and gents, that's exactly what happend to me. I had bought my dress before I read the article. And, this weekend when I was finally showing my mother my dress, I read the tag. It was 100% polyester material!!! Considering that KMart sells 100% polyester dresses for $20 really burns my buttons when I think of how much I spent on that gown. (This is not a slam against KMart...just the ridiculous inflation in the wedding market.)

I was married at The Milleridge Cottage last December. Their work(the florist) is beautiful, they did my cocktail table pieces and other scattered pieces that were part of my menu package. I went with an outside florist because I thought their prices were VERY high. If you want to save money I would honestly look into an outside florist. Their florist is owned and run by a husband and wife team who are pretty nice. I would go get a quoted price from them and then compare it with other florists-I think you will be surprised at the difference. Gina

Gina We finally went to the florist and I agree there prices seemed high we have 6 roses included in our package and it is only $15 to make it a dozen--not bad right-- well we want a ring of roses and 3 floating candles in the middle-- they want to charge $45-- crazy huh-- so we are going to look around Laura

I'm sure we have all had problems with e-mail. Aside from getting a thought into words, there are many elements missing from an e-mail that a telephone call or personal conversation have, such as, a persons tone of voice, body and facial expressions etc.

Your suggested tip sheet is a great idea. There is no discussion between you and the client, just something for them to think about and use at their own discretion.

We are using TOPAZ in Oceanside. They really seem to know what they are doing. We went to look at the Milleridge Florist but didn't feel they were giving us as much for our money.

The Harrison House is very nice. My company has had conferences there. The grounds are breathtaking and the food is excellent! They have a very interesting cocktail hour set-up with different rooms featuring differnet food. Also, since it is a hotel, it makes it sooo convenient for your out of town guests. Anyway, I hope this helps a little!

Good Luck,

So what did you do with the flowers that were included in your package? Part of me does not want to lose that money- I know we aren't going to use them for anything but the centerpieces because of their prices Laura

We are going to put those in the atrium for the cocktail hour.

I am getting married 9/17/00 at the Milleridge and am keeping what they have for the centerpiece. I am having he 6 roses in a vase too and was also told it was an extra $15 per table for another 6 roses... I am thinking about it. As far as flowers for everything else, I was recommended to Burton's in Melville. They have great prices and actually was recommended to them by someone who used them at her wedding in the Milleridge.

I also like the idea of the glass bottom boats!

DO NOT USE BURTONS!! They are cheap, but, they do not sell a quality product. They ignore simple design requests and send out whatever suits them. They figure, we're so cheap you can't complain. Well, I have been in 2 weddings where they were the florist, and been to 1 where I was not and what an embarrassment! I am a florist and I cannot believe that somebody would send out such incomplete work. The bouquets were especially horrible, we are not even talking choice of flowers, just the placement of them looked half finished. It was just ridiculous!! Remember brides if you get a great, price good for you, just make sure you give the florist a copy of a picture of what you want, or get an exact number of stems to be provided in each bouquet or arrangement. And stay on their back reminding them of what you want, if they can't be bothered with you then you got what you paid for. Good luck!!

I used them for my wedding and they weren't terrible nor was I embarassed of the job they did. I attended 4 weddings who used them and were all happy. I saved tons from not going through The Milleridge Florist and to me flowers are not that big of a deal. The majority of my money went to my hall and band-- 2 of the biggest elements. Hey, You can place a gorgeous flowerpiece in front of me but it doesn't make the food taste any better. I've heard tons of success stories with Burtons(they can be found at The Knot @ AOL messageboards),ok stories(like my own) and horror stories. One thing is for sure they are very nice to deal with....feel free to email me, I had 2 dozen red roses on brass candleabras with fillers--I will be more than happy to send anyone a pic who has a question on Burtons.............Gina

Very nasty - and something important to consider. I always close my window when driving to the airport......

So glad that you had a good experience, and good for you that you are not recquiring every detail of your wedding to be perfect for your wedding day. For the people who want their money's worth, I would not reccomend Burtons. I know 3 people who had their flowers done by Burtons and those same 3 people asked for some monetary compensation after the wedding was over because they were so unhappy with the results. There are so many other florists out there on Long Island, I would not reccomend to them to a friend. Just my opinion, like i said before they are inexpensive and with them you get EXACTLY what you pay for.

Karen--The pieces were lovely and definitely high quality like anything The Milleridge does. I scattered the extra pieces all round the cottage and used them on my cocktail tables. I had the higher star menu so it came with the 12--a good choice might be to upgrade. Even if you kept the 6, it's still an elegant choice...just enough

To all of the girls that emailed me in hysteria that booked Burtons--don't worry! The bad comments always stick out more than the good ones. Go with your gut instinct--some places I just knew from walking in that the vendor wasn't for me. Also research, research and more research--the more info you get the better. Don't listen to everything you hear--it will make you nuts :)

Please let me know if anyone has any feedback on Atlantic Floral's work good or bad (especially bad).

Good Advice, if you have booked Burtons and are concerned by what you heard, dont get upset before it's time to get upset. Just be clear about your requests, have them documented. Give the designer a picture, that's always a sure way to get exactly what you want. Or, don't do anything, they do alot of business for a reason, one little posting from me is not going to bring them down. Tell Burtons you have heard some negative comments, and that you would like to be assured that the job they will do for you will be one that they are proud of.

This is not difficult, I am a florist, I would not be offended if anyone called and said that they want to be reassured of the quality of the work. I have never had a complaint, yet I constantly am reassuring brides of their choices. It's part of the job, if they don't want to be bothered, then they don't deserve your money.

Lisa We are getting married 4/28/01--- what have you done so far? we went to see their florist last week and found them high priced--which I was warned about We want to upgrade the roses that are included and they were really nice and accomodating-- The tulle on the stairs looks really pretty and I have been told that the other arrangements they do (that are included) are enough Laura

I don't know what everyone is doing as far as entertainment but the cottage has a beautiful baby grand(you know that thing they put the seating cards on). I thought it was a shame not to have it played for our cocktail hour. So one of the guys from my band spent an hour playing Christmas songs etc on it. I thought it was a lovely touch and gave the cocktail hour very graceful backround music........Gina

Same 2 crews shooting the group shots and those of rob & I together.
